The “did you just join a boyband” line was at the end of season 5, which was 2011, which was when one direction was first breaking into the mainstream.

Spencer had the exact same haircut as Harry, Louis, and Liam, and it closely resembled that of Zayn and Niall (below)

and Hotch correctly identified it as “boyband hair” almost as soon as he saw it.

But why does he, as a 50 year old man with no daughters and only a 4 year old son, have acute knowledge as to what “boyband hair” looks like? Why would he know to immediately associate the One Direction Haircut with boybands in 2011, before they were the biggest boyband in history?
