Pearlrose Week 2019: Day 7 - Running out of time
Wish there was a part 2, I want to know what happens next, how they defeated the monsters, I want to know if there are other people out there alive waiting to be rescued, and I wan'na know badly what's the source of the monsters' existence, I have a lot of questions š
Iāve been waiting to see this movie for a long, long time, and after seeing it, Iām also excited to review it! If you havenāt seen, A Quiet Place had a huge opening weekend, which makes it the latest in a trend I really enjoy: wide release horror films doing well in theaters.
The premise is a simple, but effective one: a family is trying to survive in a world where society no longer exists, where everything that makes a sound is hunted by devastatingly fatal predators.Ā The family has developed a system to survive, to stay quiet and prevent the creatures from noticing them. But sometimes, regardless of planning, things go wrong.
In a world where any noise is dangerous because it could draw the attention of creatures who hunt through sound, this film does a fantastic job using silence to draw out tension. While watching, you find yourself holding your breath, stilling your movements, hyper aware of every noise you make and every noise the characters on the screen make.Ā Thereās not really much reprieve, because even in the relaxed moments, the family is still being careful to be quiet, and the slightest noise can ruin an easygoing atmosphere.Ā
And again, the film does this masterfully. I havenāt been this tense watching a movie in a long time, and itās really nonstop. Thereās no moment in the film where youāre not aware that any noise could be dangerous, just like thereās no moment in their lives where the characters are not aware. It makes for a really immersive experience.
But, the tension created through silence, sound, and the ever present threat of the creatures, as effective as it is, is only a backdrop for a story that is about a family, and about their relationship with each other. This is where the movie goes from an effective monster movie to a story that draws you in and attaches itself to you.
While the entire family has prominent roles, the main character is arguably the oldest daughter, a teenager, who is deaf and whose relationship with her father is strained. Tension within the family is centered around their relationship, which is critical to building the characters and the connections to them. You understand her insecurities, you understand his feelings when he works on repairing her cochlear implant, you understand how the rest of the family feels when they speak alone about the father and daughter.
You like the characters, you understand them, and you root for them during dangerous moments. Not only are you drawn in by the way the film uses sounds, but youāre also invested in each individual on screen.
Overall: 10/10. This was a truly engrossing movie, which pulls you into the story to experience it in a visceral way through silence and a perfect soundtrack, and through the connections it builds between the characters on screen. The best kinds of horror films arenāt ones you watch, but ones you experience, and A Quiet Place makes sure that you experience the story.

The effect that A Quiet Place had on the theater was so unreal. People were afraid to eat. Half the people, myself and the guy beside me included, spent tense movie moments covering their mouths as to not make a sound, one time somebody stepped on a nacho container during a VERY tense moment and the entire theater lost their shit. People were gasping, one woman screamed, everyone chatised the individual quickly and hushedly before returning to the movie. When the lights came up everyone was still whispering. People were tiptoeing out like everyone was fucking silent and to have THAT effect on your audience shows something.
I don't know if anyone would ever read this, but I would appreciate if you would. Wether you're an anime fan or not, it's alright
š Ok, now let's talk about the point of this post. I've always heard about anime for a very long time when I was a kid, but never really had a chance to watch some. The most familiar anime to me was just probably PokĆ©mon. I remember seeing some clips of DBZ, Sailormoon, Naruto and more as a young kid but I barely remember what was happening and what the story was about. Anime was always big and popular, but I don't understand why because I wasn't so fluent at english that time š. Wether it'd be subtitled or dubbed, english would still be confusing. My parents would always control/limit my time in watching tv, so that might be the reason why I wasn't so used to watching english shows. At that time, there were more cartoon shows than anime so I was more used to cartoons. I would still see advertisements of some anime shows, but I would just ignore it since I was not that interested in it... Maybe that was missing in my childhood, anime. But I did love watching Pokemon and that one anime with the Dinosaurs and cards something. I started watching some anime shows online maybe when I was 14 years old. Then I immediately fell in love with it. I've continued my love for anime by watching some of the animations, movies, episodes and even reading manga. I also started drawing a few fanarts too.
As far as I know, here are the animes and mangas I've watched or read already:
-PokƩmon, which is everyone's favorite
-Naruto(except naruto shippuden) I want to continue watching the next episodes, but I keep on forgetting and I lack motivation ā¹
-Attack on Titan
-Kill la Kill
-Little Witch Academia
-Houseki no Kuni/Land of the Lustrous
-Devilman Crybaby
-Boku no Hero Academia/My Hero Academia (Only Season 1 š)
-Your Name
-A Silent Voice
-Shelter, just a Music Video but I consider it special with excellent art, music and story.
-Children who chase lost voices
-Spirited Away, one of the most depressing ones and stuck in my mind
-Howl's Moving Castle
-Grave of the Fireflies, the sadness of this one still remains in my mind too
-The Cat Returns, I saw the full film as a kid but I don't remember most of the story and plot š
Here are some non-anime special mentions that inspired me to start watching anime
-Avatar, The Last Airbender and Korra
-Voltron
Aaand that's probably it. I know, my life is boring and there's probably hundreds or if not thousands more out there better than my list. So, I need your help Anime Lovers. Where do I start, and what can you recommend for me? Your help would be greatly appreciated š
You're so Racist
As I check tumblr after being away from it all weekend it feels like issue of Concrete as been made clear. However, itās personally important to me that I express my apologies as I am the one who responsible for the text written next to her.
I do not associate illiteracy with people of color. Thatās just not where my mind goes. Had Concrete been under consideration for an episode, she, like all of the ideas for SU, would have been scrutinized carefully to prevent any careless mistakes like this. Itās a constant consideration to champion love and acceptance in all the episodes we make. But saying this now is meaningless to anyone who was hurt by my words. Itās too late. People make mistakes and I am currently one of those people.Ā
I canāt undo what Iāve done but I can offer you my sincere apology. I can let you know that I make it a point to learn from my errors even when accidental. And it is my hope that any mistakes I make in the future always end with a step forward in a positive direction.Ā Thatās how I can be better.Ā Thatās how we can be better.
Thank you,
H
Thank You so much :')
Have you experienced Art Block before? If you did, how did you get through it?
I did. So. Many. Times. And I still do. In that case I usually get really mad at myself for like, a day or two (but no spoiler,Ā it doesnāt work).Ā Forcing myself to draw doesnāt help either, so I just kinda wait till I find inspiration again ! You can make the most of this time to absorb. Watch new series. Play. Read. Hang out with friends. Look at strangers.Ā You wanna do anything that can give you inspiration !
As an artist who used to take requests, I can assure you that if youāre experiencing an art block, now is the time to get the thirty requests that have been waiting in you ask box for months done.
Still, taking care of yourself and maybe doing a little introspection are the number #1 ways to get through an art block gently ! Take it easy and donāt rush into it. Youāll be able to create again, probably sooner than you think.
Oh, I'm just an ordinary teen (18/Male) who loves everything about art.
