Steve Harrington, the popular junior jock that everyone loved. When you first moved to Hawkins, you heard the rumors of Steve. He was the popular jock on the basketball and swim teams. He did all he could to show his stature and high-society persona that charmed everyone but you. You wouldn’t feed into his ego like his friends and his girlfriend. Although, you had a couple of classes with Nancy and she was nothing like Steve or their annoying friends. She was nice, caring, and sweet to everyone. Sometimes she had an attitude, but overall she was a great girl. 

Steve noticed that you sat near the back of the cafeteria and tried to reign you into their group like the other kids that didn’t really talk to the popular kids. You ignored all his advances and made an effort to walk away from him each time. It wasn’t a rude manner, you just couldn’t care less to be friends with those kinds of people.

“Hey Y/N, right?” Steve sat across from you in the school’s library. You looked up confused as to why he was sitting with you or even talking to you. 

“Yeah… what do you need?” You asked kind of quickly. You didn’t trust his friends to be around the corner to do or say something to you.

“Can I sit here? There are not many tables that are free.” He asked while setting his books down, which indicated that no matter your answer, he wasn’t getting up. 

“Sure, I guess.” You grinned, looking down back at your essay for English class. It was quiet for a while before he spoke up again. You mentally rolled your eyes thinking he was going to be working. 

“What are you working on?” Steve looked at your paper.

“Essay for English.” You commented plainly.

“What is it about?” He kept trying to get a conversation out of you.

“William Shakespeare. Can I get back to this or do you want to pussyfoot around?” You sighed, curtly telling him to shut his mouth. Steve didn’t comment or talk after that, rather he actually went back to the work that lay before him. You thought about your comment and contemplated on whether you should apologize for being so harsh, but decided against it. You finished not too long after and exchanged pleasant goodbyes before leaving the library. This was the Steve you knew all of high school and no one could tell you he changed or became a different man. Steve Harrington was the high-ego jock that strutted around in his daddy’s new car. 

Years have gone by, you’ve been away from home going to college, but now that it’s summer break you came back home and found a job at the local Family Video store. You walked in and talked to the nice girl at the counter, she gave you an application, and to talk to Keith when he got back. You got the job right away being a movie buff yourself, but immediately regretted it when you saw the employee shift chart in the back. Steve Harrington’s name was written on the board. You wanted to practically die knowing that you didn’t want to see or talk to him. But of course, during your second week working, he was the only person working when you were. Thank God he wasn’t the one training you though.

Robin and you have become fast friends which is weird because she said she was also friends with Steve. 

“How can you be friends with a guy like Steve “the hair” Harrington and be this cool? Do you bring happiness in his life or something?” You chuckled with her, stocking the candy jars.

“I didn’t care for him at first, but he’s not that bad. Trust me, he’s changed from when he was in high school.” Robin nudged you gently. You didn’t want to believe it and told yourself for a while that you wouldn’t.

“I’ll believe it when I see it, but being that fact that I’m blind,” You put your sunglasses on. “I guess I’ll be waiting.” She chuckled at your playful antics.

“Get back to work before Keith finds us messing around.” She chuckled going to check out a few customers.

Your second week came, and you had your shifts with Steve. Robin volunteered to switch with another one of your co-workers just so that you wouldn’t be alone. You thanked her immensely and made a mental note to bake her cookies as a thank you.

“Robin, come on. I don’t want to be late clocking in… Y/N?” Steve’s surprised voice rang through the break room.

“Morning Robin. Hi, Steve.” You smiled politely taking in the words your grandma said to you. Kill them with kindness, don’t let them know your feelings, they’ll use them against you. And so you didn’t. You kept them hidden and to yourself. You didn’t want Steve to know you had an annoyed feeling that he was going to be working with you. Robin made the time go by quicker, but his lingering cologne still followed you throughout the store.

“I thought that was you when I read your name on the chart. When did you start working here?” Steve said leaning against the counter.

“Last week. I needed a summer job, they were hiring, I got the job, and here I am.” You took a box and went to the back to work on paperwork. Steve followed you, because why not? He always was.

“Hey, I want to apologize for how I acted in high school. Truly I wanted to be friends with you. I know I acted like a know-it-all asshole, but I promise you, I thought you were kind.” Steve stopped you from walking into Keith’s office.

“You ever find it funny how people say they want to apologize and then they don’t? I understand that you feel it now, but the Steve I knew is the Steve I see in front of me. I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be friends. We’re co-workers and nothing more.” You moved pasted him, sat in the office chair, and started on the pile of paperwork that was due by the end of the day. You were leaving for the day, hugging Robin goodbye when you saw Steve walking towards you.
