Hi! I like your collages :) I wonder how long does it take to make them?

Hello! Many thanks for your kind words and your thoughtful question! I am so happy that you like my collages, and I am so delighted to reply! :)

In general, it takes me several days to make a collage. It took me a total of eleven days to make both collages of Zuko (Fire Is Life and Zuko in Water Tribe war paint), so I think that these specific collages took about five or six days each.

I had a lot of fun making these collages! When I completed them and cleared my collage-making stuff off my desk, I felt a bit sad to be putting that stuff away. Then I received your ask, and it motivated me to put that stuff back on my desk, together with the completed collages, and to take the following photo to accompany this reply.

image

[Image description: A photo of the surface of a desk.

On the desk are two completed collages. Both collages are portraits of Zuko. In one, he is wearing Water Tribe war paint.

Also on the desk are some items that were involved in making the collages. These items include an X-Acto knife and cutting mat, two adhesive applicators, a ruler, a pen, a mechanical pencil, and various kinds of paper.

One piece of paper has a pen sketch on it. Other pieces of paper have shapes cut out of them. Some pieces of paper have smaller pieces of paper pasted onto them, and one also has pencil notations on it. End image description.]

For these collages, I made a pen sketch and chose color palettes based upon character design elements from the Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series and comics.

For the Water Tribe war paint collage, I also consulted descriptions from the fanworks that inspired it, which are Salvage by @muffinlance and war paint by @agentcalliope — two beautiful fanfics in which Zuko is essentially adopted as an honorary member of the Southern Water Tribe.

I selected paper for Zuko’s skin and scar, and for the war paint, by pasting various pieces of paper onto other pieces and testing the effects of layering them.

When I had selected all the paper for both collages, I made a chart containing a column of paper swatches and a corresponding list of planned locations, such as “hair highlights” (russet origami paper), “irises, border” (metallic gold origami paper), and “background” (colorful and sparkly momi paper).

To assemble the collages, I cut the paper into shapes with an X-Acto blade, sometimes with the help of a ruler, and then pasted the shapes into place with one adhesive or another, depending upon the weight of the paper, which ranged from art tissue to card stock.

After completing the collages, I tried scanning them, but the scans didn’t show the reflective quality of the metallic gold origami paper.

I wanted Zuko’s gold eyes to shine, as though from his inner fire. So I brought the collages to a window, angled them so that Zuko’s eyes reflected the sunshine, and took photos to post on Tumblr.

Just as I enjoyed making these collages, I am enjoying reading and replying to people’s comments and questions, such as this lovely ask! Thank you again! :)

reasons not to put image descriptions under readmores

it puts a burden on disabled people to click through to people’s individual blogs in order to have access, instead of browsing their dash like sighted people do

hyperlinks and screen readers don’t always get along, so readmores can actually be more difficult for people using screen readers to access

if you ever change your url or delete your blog, that image is rendered inaccessible

it’s annoying

don’t do it

Cartographic Practices of Arda: Men

[overthinking fantasy cartography series: Elves, Orcs, Dwarves, Hobbits, and Men]

o   Men might seem like the most straightforward group to analyze, but they’re not. Why should we assume that humans in Arda use the same cartographic practices that we do? For that matter, who is “we”? Cartography is not a set of objective and universally or historically standard techniques; it is not an exact science; the modern maps treated as real or correct maps are not the one true way to represent space. Tolkien’s Edain may be based on Western Europeans, but they’re still fantasy, and there’s no reason that their cartography should look like Western Europe’s

Further, Western European cartography wasn’t standardized in terms of techniques or even units of measure until early states began to want visual representations of their territory that would make them more easily taxed and managed, especially as enclosure policies took off, market forces became increasingly dominant, and controlling a standardized populace became an important goal of government

o    Western cartography is also deeply intertwined with maps as a colonial and imperialist tool, which impacted the development of mapping practices, the lands those maps reflected, and the ways in which space was imagined. I think that governing, planning military operations, maybe taxing the populace, and carrying out various expansionist programs would be the activities in Middle-earth driving cartographic development among Men, similar to Europe, but it’s not inevitable at all that the maps they make for such things would look the same. Maybe they could make maps of layered symbols rather than mimicking on-the-ground spatial relations, or paintings whose details correspond to geographic referents, or physical models of space a la Polynesian stick charts (although I do think there’s an artifacts-have-politics argument to be made about which cartographic practices are most conducive to certain uses and conceptions of space, but I digress)

o   But presuming Men do make maps in the same vein as those found in the books (though I should say I don’t take those as being real in-world maps, per se), what would they map? And how would they map it?

Starting with the Edain and the kingdoms they founded, since their influence is so centered in LOTR, I think their cartography would develop as a formal practice in Númenor, and prior to that, they might use the maps of Elven realms of which they were vassals, or might create their own spatial navigation techniques, not necessarily cartographic

Likely, considerable influence of Elvish cartography on Númenórean maps would carry over to Gondor and Arnor. While Elves might only need maps as reference for memorization, or for military strategy planning, I think Men’s reproduction of and reliance on maps would increase greatly, especially during the colonial age of Númenor and the realms they established. Cartography could become a more established discipline; populations could be managed more effectively, at least under the more competent rulers; similar to early-state-formation Europe, you could see cartography as an increasingly important tool of state

(this is a long one, so the rest is under the cut)

oh my goodness, one of dian fossey’s first close up observations with gorillas happened when she was trying to climb a tree to see them better, but so badly that by the time she’d gotten up the entire group had come out of hiding to look at her: “Nearly all members of the group had totally exposed themselves, forgetting about hiding coyly behind foliage screens because it was obvious to them that the observer had been distracted by tree-climbing problems, an activity they could understand.”

"omg youre pissed off about the elves HAIR LENGTH???" yes! yes i am! because tolkien created an incredible subversive fantasy world (IN THE 1930s) that rejected the influence of modern society - beauty norms were different, gender norms were different, its what made tolkiens world a WORLD. it was unique. but instead of actually caring about tolkiens unique and beautiful world, amazon has chosen to busy themselves with making sure the beauty standards are THEIR beauty standards, the gender norms are THEIR gender norms, the messages being spread are AMAZON'S messages, not TOLKIEN'S messages. sometimes things have nuance to them - maybe not to you, fine, but that doesnt mean the nuance isnt there.

90% of arguments about media could just be solved by saying “different people like different things in their stories” and leaving it at that

“In 1404, King Taejong fell from his horse during a hunting expedition. Embarrassed, looking to his left and right, he commanded, “Do not let the historian find out about this.” To his disappointment, the historian accompanying the hunting party included these words in the annals, in addition to a description of the king’s fall.“

LMFAOOOOOO rip to that guy
