also this might be a little late but i read your thing on being an aromatic playing dating sims and ended up nodding and going "so true" the entire time. like yeah holy shit that's EXACTLY how i feel! my favourite otome games are those with a protag with her own personality, because the appeal is watching over the couple from a third party perspective, not trying to be the protag.
(this is how they ended up with like 30 ocs for the tokimeki memorial girls side series)
omg yeah! I'm glad to hear you can relate lol. I love love love a protag with a well-established personality <3 -- My personal top picks have got to be Katarina Hamefura & Teuta Bustafellows. It's fun to see how the mc's personality meshes with the different LI, and I like picking out a "best match" of each game based on chemistry with the heroine. :)
I think that's why I tend to struggle to get into some of the indie titles that have completely customizable mcs lol. It's a different style to get used to.
Though!! I did play a route of Killer Chat after you mentioned it yesterday! (Ronin's route - it felt like a natural 1st pick story-wise lol) And I really appreciate that the game has a default name because that's always my biggest struggle when making up an oc protag lol. I liked customizing Maya's sprite and playing as them because I do feel like their dedication to their writing and enthusiasm for lying about being a serial killer are pretty good defining character traits. I'll probably change her a little bit with each route I play lol. It's a great game, thanks for reminding me about it!!
genuinely "the best starter VN is the one you're the most interested in" is the best advice there is on the topic. like i even recommend checking out indie OELVNs on itchio and stuff to look for specific niches of subject matter you're into if you just want to see how you vibe with the medium, you don't have to start with the classics if they don't appeal to you and if you DO want to get into the ones that are big in western otakudom it's still a good idea to start with one that's in step with your existing fiction interests
genuinely the only things i'd actively advise against for starter VNs if you're actually interested in getting into the medium for real are "parodies"/"subversions" made out of contempt for "dating sims", if nothing else please start with something earnest and true
ohhh okay. i can kind of understand the intention there then? it makes sense now, knowing the script edits & model edits are separate things.
Without editing the model to look more feminine, it does seem like a more accurate take on living in a small town as a gender non-conforming person. I can't personally speak to what that's like in Japan, but I know how small towns can be in the U.S. at least. So i get what they're probably going for there, and it is kinda interesting, if a bit jarring at first without context.
It's an interesting way to make the mc's gender topical rather than just a casual or cosmetic change. though it is maybe a little uncomfortable as well, it feels like there's a point to it at least rather than just. random he/him-ing out of nowhere.
the different persona series femc mods are so funny when you line them all up next to each other
persona 4 femc mod: it works for the full game, but for some reason, everyone's kind of a dick in this mod
persona 5 femc mod: the mod maker just drops an update twice a year and disappears but the update is fucking great
persona 3 femc mod: everyone's going insane with weekly updates. did you know that they edited the text for the different languages in the game. they changed the pencil case andpen. they added an otome game to the arcade. they--
persona 5 beta femc mod: they're trying to be the new persona 3 femc mod but it's super early in development. also girl your hair is a tomato
lmao the tomato hair comment is so real 😠i do think she's really cute though lol, and i love the concept art she's based on~
I've seen bits and pieces of all of these, but only played with the reload one, and even then just a little bit. I may try out the one for 4 when i eventually play that one though!!
Gonna be so real if a 12 year old traced my art and put it on their school binder I would be so fucking honored
name a more iconic thing to happen for the fictional qpr community than Donna Noble quite literally meeting her soulmate and being like hmm. there's no one I've ever wanted to fuck less
Dear video essay creators. A video analysis is when you analyze a piece of media. No no look at me. A summary, no matter how thorough, is not an analysis. An analysis requires you to draw conclusions about the media such as authorial intent, real-world parallels, discussion about themes/worldbuilding/character motivation, and so much more. You have to stop summarizing something and saying that’s analysis. The Gaylors are doing more critical analysis than you. Is that who you want to lose to? The gaylors?
