Wanted to try analyzing Lyle in depth/just my general thoughts and opinions about him. all under cut 👇

Alright. I want to preface this by saying that I am not justifying anything unethical that Lyle has done by any means- moreso I am trying to figure out a reasoning as to why he is the way that he is. Nor am I trying to “woobify” him or whatever, I just think he’s genuinely an interesting character I’d like to dissect. Morally greyish. I also apologize if it seems I am grasping at straws at some points, hopefully I’ll be making good enough reasoning for my thoughts.

First off, I believe Lyle has Bipolar Mood Disorder. It seems he’s been suffering through a manic episode during the events of the game and even beforehand. He talks of a project he has been working on in his dark room, and while its clear these are just photographs of Sam (for the most part), Lyle could still consider this an actual project; likely something he’s obsessing over because of a drawn-out manic episode. Because he has an interest in photography, he likely reverts to similar activities during these episodes.

His chronic obsession with Sam could also explain this. It’s not uncommon for people with Bipolar Mood Disorder to become obsessed with another person, and y’know, being turned into a giant mechanical camera spider probably isn’t helping much. It’s clear he’s ashamed of his new form (based on his reaction when you look at him), and he knows Sam probably wouldn’t relish in his appearance either, which only worsens the obsession.

Obviously Lyle has a crush on Sam. I… don’t need to explain that. Lol. Clearly Lyle isn’t treating this crush the same as the average person would, though, and I believe this is because he literally doesn’t know how else to. Bipolar heavily influences on one’s relationships with other people, and assuming he’s not exactly an extroverted individual (anxiety meds? being a weird nerd?), he tends to be ‘creepy’ towards Sam with the photography and all. I’m lenient on calling him creepy because I don’t think he fully understands what he’s doing is bad, nor do I think being ‘creepy’ is necessarily intentional. It’s just a combination of disordered thinking, romantic obsession, and emotional irregularities.

I understand he stole Sam’s spare key. Again, Im not trying to justify it, it’s.. not good at all, but I don’t think there’s actually any proof he’s used it before? So I cant really speak on that topic too much. Maybe he took it in a frenzy and was too anxious to return it. I dunno 🤷‍♀️. Its a little too far even for him, I mean, he asks Sam for consent to kiss. Whatever you wish to believe, I suppose.

In general I think some therapy and mood stabilizers would help him plenty. My boy just needs some help regulating his emotions is all… thanks for listening to my rambling. I love him a lot!

I kept thinking how strange it was that the first floor was so distorted despite inorganic stuff not mutating unless its fused to a person. We see the same kind of space distortions happen with the landlord.

I also think that's why there's no windows in any of the first floor rooms, she's subconsciously trying to protect people. She bent time and space to make it impossible for anyone to have an exterior wall, which I think is sweet even if she was too late.

Look Outside Posting part 3: Inside

Today we'll be discussing the warping of interior spaces in the apartment.

Credit to this post by @bunnieswithknives about Sybil being the flesh moss. I REALLY like the theory that floor 1 is an endless maze because Sybil is unconsciously trying to keep everyone in away from windows- it's delightful.

But that being said, it's not enough to explain the sheer number of distinct room-distortion effects happening in the building. Many of them seem notably indifferent or hostile in intent, and not all of them are from people who are actually physically fused with the rooms.

To review some of them:

The Grinning Beast's disappearing doorway and stretching hall. (And quite possibly Lyle's stretched bathroom too - credit to @contract-crawdad for noticing the similarity there.)

The landlord's apartment: time dilation, more and more rooms being inserted, the door in the back returning to the front, and a false "outside" battlefield. Almost certainly connected to the mutated landlord.

The infinite floor 1, and the infinite hallway in apartment 13. I actually think these are thanks to Rat Hole and his twin, the Mouth - they're entwined in the walls there, the two phenomena are similar, and Rat Hole mentions something about "infinite length" in his horrifying ramble about how he got this way.

The Stargazer's dark and light versions of the same apartment, including the dark version somehow extending next door into what should be Sam's apartment 33.

The dark pits that there is definitely not space for between some of the floors (rat rooms and teeth apartment, especially).

Possibly some of the themed room environments, like the taxidermy walls and the abundant greenery in the plant room.

The point to all this: this is a recurring phenomenon, and it crops up in different ways, in different localized areas. There's a mechanism behind it, beyond just the unexplainable powers some monsters get.

Isn't it weird that interior rooms are changing? They're practically defined by being places the Visitor can't see. Maybe that's the crux of it?

The common factor is areas frequented by certain Witnesses - possibly ones that are less than sane in particular, as Mutt's Fish and Chips and the boiler room camp seem fine, or possibly places that are the stomping grounds of only one particular mutant or type of mutant.

Per Part 1, witnesses have become, in effect, tiny extensions of the Visitor. It can't see through them that well, or being seen by them would be enough to transform you too.

But, maybe, the places they're familiar with can be picked up by it a little - enough for the warping effects of its perception to manifest.

I do wish we saw enough of the outside to say whether anything comparable might have happened to Earth's landscape, which the Visitor saw directly. Maybe its view being filtered through an unfamiliar brain and senses is necessary for this to happen so dramatically.

I'm only saying this for your sake, but objectively, it's not a smart idea to bring politics into normal hobbies. You might lose supporters of your blog just because of your political stance, and that would be terrible since you're so amazing!! It's only a suggestion, but I really reccomend not bringing politics into anything.

plus some power headcanons:

I could imagine his devil fruit power have to do with like, forming extra body segments for different situations extra legs for running or extra arms for wielding more weapons at once

he could make silk like a silkworm to trap foes when he sleeps he hangs himself from a high spot like a bagworm

he can regrow lost body segments and I could imagine if he's cut in half from right at the junction of a segment, he can grow another immediately while the separate segment, if it has limbs, can function independently for a short while before running out of juice.

if even just one segment survives he could probably regrow himself from that

also because caterpillars I imagine he has a very ravenous appetite, rivalling Luffy's, almost. can't grow extra segments if he's running on empty.

so yeah, those are my headcanons so far
