TW: divorce
Daphne was nervous. It sounded crazy that she would be nervous to meet with her father and his family for the billionth time, but nonetheless, she was. They didnāt feel like her family, but they didnāt feel like not family either. They were all in a weird limbo, no one really knew how they felt about Daphne in their family. Her dad ignored her but pretended they were ultra close, her stepmom hated her and put her down at every turn, and her siblings were so young that they still worshiped the very ground she walked on, something their mother hated with a passion. Allison saw her as a threat, someone who could mess up or ruin everything she had worked so hard to build. She was too much and not enough for them at the same time. Daphne thought about the moment she met Allison often.Ā
Daphne was excited to finally meet the girlfriend she had heard so much about from her father. He had other girlfriends before, but Daphne couldnāt recall a single time that they made him look half as happy as he was in the moment. He had been bragging about the two meeting for weeks. As Daphne opens the door into the cafĆ© where they agreed to meet, she spots Allison. The first thing that strikes her is how similar she is to Donita, something that grows more obvious as time goes on. Allison was also a fashion designer; while not nearly as renowned or famous as her mother, she did pretty well for herself. On paper, their experiences were similar too. They both grew up in a large family and left their small town to be a fashion designer. At that moment, Daphne empathized with Allison. She knew it was probably difficult to be the āsecond choiceā especially being so close to the original. Allison would probably compare herself to Donita constantly, never quite measuring up. Two hours later, as they leave the cafĆ©, Henry tells Daphne that she will always be her number one priority, no matter what.
Henry had clearly broken that promise to her. Allison hated her and Henry didnāt even try to defend her anymore, instead focusing on his new family and children. Her father used to be her biggest confidante and they would talk for hours when he wasnāt working, which was rare. He had really cut back on the hours since he married Allison, and while Daphne was happy that her half-siblings could have such a present father, she was sad that she didnāt get to enjoy that for herself. As always, when Henry walks in he asks her two questions: āHowās school life and your friends?ā and after an uncomfortable silence, āHowās Ms. Donata?ā. Never āyour momā not even āDonitaā, always choosing to use the title clients and strangers call her. Daphne thinks that sometimes he forgets that he was in an 8-year relationship with Donita, and no matter how much they denied it, their futures were intertwined. They used to be so in love.
Daphne looked up from her Cheerios to see her mommy and daddy kissing each other under the mistletoe. All she could see from their eyes was love, and they quietly muttered things to each other with laughter in their voices, before looking at Daphne. The product of their love and the best thing to ever happen to them. The family couldnāt be closer or happier, they even wore matching Christmas pajamas, designed by Donita, especially for them.Ā
Daphne knew that they both hurt the other in so many ways. She truly didnāt think there was a fault in the divorce, they both made mistakes, and they were just an ill-fitted match that was never going to work out long-term. They got married so fast that they didnāt even really know each other. They didnāt put in the work to keep their relationship and make it work, believing in just love. They were so different, it was a miracle to believe that they even fell in love at all. Nonetheless, the divorce still shattered everything. It took away some of her motherās āsparkleā and made her even more cynical, something difficult to do based on the fact that she made her fortune from making clothes out of live animals. Deny it all they want, if you didnāt love someone, you wouldnāt be as shattered as they were that day.
Donita had been staring at the wall for fifteen minutes. She didnāt blink or even look at Daphne, sitting next to her. Daphne wasnāt 100% sure what was happening,Ā but she knew her life was about to permanently change whether she wanted it to or not. Her parents, who she always thought were perfect Gods, had cried more in the last three days than she had ever seen in her seven years of life. Even her mother, who she had never seen cry and never would again, let out a few stray tears.Ā Lawyers were talking to Daphne and talks were being held about splitting assets and what to do about her. Donita still didnāt move, just staring at the walls and crying.Ā Her parents' fights had been really bad recently, her dad even moved out.Ā They seemed to scream at each other until they were hoarse all the time, about everything. Daphne longed for the days of Christmas PJs and Cheerios.Ā
As Daphne went into the house to awkwardly stand in the corner until her half-siblings dragged her away, she thought of all these moments. She also thought about Allison. She didnāt hate her stepmom, she loved her. Allison was the mother to her half-siblings, and no matter how awful she was to Daphne, she still loved her. She really was a great mother to them. She brought back the purpose of her fatherās life. He started to play music again and began to come alive, something she hadnāt seen since he moved out. She loved her stepmom, and always will, but sheās been working on boundaries with her. Daphne was nervous, but also a little excited to spend time with her father.
TW: Depression
I'm planning on making 1-2 more parts on this short internet series with a few other things sprinkled in, lmk what you want to know next
Daphneās life was spinning out of control. She feels like a different person than she was before she had social media, but she couldnāt quit. Social media was the only thing that made her happy, but also made her depression and sadness that much worse. Daphne hadnāt left her room in days and hadn't talked to her family in weeks. She knew her family was worried about her, but she wasnāt willing to go out and face them. They would be so disappointed in her and how she is a loser who cares too much about what others think, at the detriment of her own health. She didn't deserve her familyās love anymore, and she isnāt sure they would even recognize her, she didnāt. She felt like a huge burden to them, especially her mom, who was extremely worried about her and was skipping out on things she loved to do to watch her. She needed to take a break from social media and learn some boundaries about what to post and who to deal with people on the internet, but she canāt. The internet and social media are her downfall and her salvation. It was an oxymoron, just like she was at that point. She never got out of bed but she never rested. She felt everything and nothing at the same time. She had changed so much to fit what the internet would want, and now no one is happy, especially not her. Her content was falling in quality and views, and she no longer found joy in what she was posting. She needed to do something, but she didnāt think she deserved to grow and nobody would want to or be able to help her in the way she so desperately needed.
Gourmand could tell something was off. Daphne had not spoken or reached out to him in weeks, the longest she had ever gone. Donita skipped their monthly dinner to ātake careā of Daphne, but she wasnāt sick or injured as far as he knew. It was because of that phone, he knew it. He knew it was a mistake for her to get it and wanted to just rip it out of her hands the moment it was in them. He didnāt know much about the internet or technology, he had no interest in it and didnāt want the government to know about where he was (I hc Gourmand as the biggest conspiracy theorist and believer ever) and social media had no appeal to him. He could see the obsession in Daphne and wanted to quell it. That kind of determination couldnāt be healthy, especially for something as useless as the internet. Daphne was throwing away her life for that phone, and dragging her mother down with her. He loved Daphne, but he needed to form some kind of way to drag her out of the depths of the comments and internet, and he needed to do it now. He would meet with all the important people in Daphneās life tonight and figure out a plan of attack.
Violet, Vallen, Vera and Varina all belong to the incredible @jokerislandgirl32

TW: abandonment feelings
Daphne was excited to finally learn how to play the piano. Her father was an excellent pianist, along with her aunt Violet along with Varina and Vera. Music was literally in her blood, it was how her mother fell in love with her father and how her father paid the bills. Henry Lopez was a world class musician before he transitioned to producing music. Some of Daphneās earliest memories were seeing concerts, watching Varina and Vera flourish in piano, and watching Henry and Violet play music together, before Henry moved out and never spoke to Violet again. It was expected for Daphne to be another musician, especially by her father. Daphne could feel him pulling away from her, so she couldnāt fail or mess this up. Daphne took a deep breath, steeled her nerves, and walked through the door.Ā
A couple of months later, Daphne knew she was completely out of her league. She practiced for hours after class every day, but she was still the worst in her class by far. Her fingers couldnāt move quick enough and she always seemed to forget where the notes were, no matter how many times everyone seemed to tell her. She could see her teacher sigh, out of the corner of her eye, as she walked into the classroom. She waved to Vallen, a star student and brother of Vera and Varina, and sat down next to her teacher. When she started playing, she could feel the waves of judgment from her teacher and the pain of all the other students, suffering through her āmusicā. Daphne was red from embarrassment and could feel everyone elseās eyes on her, wondering what she was doing on the piano.Ā
After Daphneās lesson was finished, she waited on the curb for her father to pick her up. He didnāt even look at her as she climbed into the front seat and just started driving, pointedly ignoring her. Henry didnāt think Daphne was trying hard enough in piano and viewed it as sheer laziness. āI just wish you would be more like Allison, she was playing in concerts at your age. Iām disappointed in you, Daphneā Henry told her as he drove down the highway. Daphne didnāt respond, she couldnāt convince him that she was trying either way. Daphne could see that Allison was coming up more and more recently. They had never met, but her dad seemed to really be in love. Daphne wanted to be happy for him and she was, but the feeling of abandonment was getting stronger every time Allison came up and the chasm between them only widened. Daphne stared out the window until her father pulled up to the Varmitech Industries building, where Daphne would be spending the night while her mother worked. Henry was supposed to spend the night, just the two of them, but he decided that he instead wanted to go with Allison, causing Donita to frantically text Zach, asking if he would be able to watch Daphne. Daphne was excited to spend time with the Varmitechs, she really was, but she couldnāt help but feel the familiar twinge of disappointment that her father had let her down again, something that seemed to be getting more and more common. Daphne sighed and started walking towards the building, feeling like a burden.
Violet was disappointed in Henry. She could tell that Daphne was upset that he didnāt spend the night, and frankly so was Violet. She was always happy to watch Daphne, viewing her almost as another daughter, but was annoyed by the extremely short notice and complete lack of acknowledgement from Henry. Once upon a time, they were playing music and singing together, but then Henry and Donita got divorced. Violet was upset about the way that Henry chose to handle the news and felt bad for her friend, but was more surprised by Henry never reaching out to them. She sent a few texts to him in the beginning, asking how he was and that she was always there if he wanted to talk, but he never responded. Violet felt disappointed in Henry, yet again, he had thrown away years of friendship and kinship, never speaking to Violet again after the divorce. He even seemed to actively avoid her, never looking her in the eye, something Violet definitely noticed and did not approve of. Henry seemed to be disappointing in every category recently, he was a bad husband, friend, and seemingly father. Violet sighed and opened the door as Daphne walked through the elevator doors, wanting to be the parental figure Daphne deserved.
