Derived from the Greek word Τρούλος (troulos) or dome, these conical limestone structures were erected to evade a tax imposed by the Kingdom of Naples that stated all new construction was to be taxed. The Trulli, being made without mortar, were considered temporary structures with no hopes of surviving the elements and therefore, not taxable.
