I said before that I thought 4 Minutes was pretty instantaneously the best looking BL on the market for 2024 after one episode. Which, not gonna lie, is a pretty big fucking claim. Thereās been a lot of BL thatās come out thatās looked good, and I do think thereās been a steady improvement overall in the market in the last few years. Personally I think Japanese and Korean BL have a stronger production quality over a majority of Thai BL but like, if thatās a hot take I guess I prefer my food spicy.Ā
The point being~ if Iām gonna make such a hyperbolic statement, well I better back it up right?Ā
So Iām gonna break down a few scenes from the first episode, what I liked about them, why they worked for me, and why on a technical level I think 4 Minutes has just got it going on.
Sidenote: my google docs kept trying to autocorrect āBibleā to āthe Bibleā and idk how to teach google I mean the hot Thai actor and not the book of Jesus.Ā
To start, Iām going to break down this scene featuring Great and his nepo baby cat:Ā
I thought starting with this scene would be good because itās such a low-key scene and honestly making these simplistic scenes visually interesting is very difficult! But if you have the basics down, the foundations of cinematography and film making, these simpler scenes can be really memorable.Ā
Like yeah weāre all gonna remember this scene because shirtless Bible and oh my god Akira!? - I have only recently learned who Akira is; why is this cat getting a bigger bag than me? - but beyond that, what makes it cool to watch? What makes it interesting? What information does it showcase to the audience?Ā
One thing I added to the video was a grid for theĀ rule of thirds.Ā
Rule of thirds is a shot composition technique applied to both film and photography. Itās the grid you see if you film a homevideo and helps a Director and Cinematographer figure out where to place the subject or subjects of the shot. The idea is the gridlines show you where you āshouldā place the subject(s) of said shot.Ā
Like everything, the rule of thirds is a guideline in filmmaking, not a hard and fast unbreakable rule. Filmmakers like Wes Anderson like to play more with central composition shots, rather than ROT.Ā
Anyway on to the opening shot, right after our credits and weāre moving into the shot.Ā
To start, the first thing I notice is the sceneāsĀ color grading. Color grading in film is the manipulation of raw film footage to create specific color tones throughout a project. Sometimes this grading is more pointed and obvious, thinkĀ The Matrix, while in other films itās not as obvious but still very prominent, thinkĀ Killers of the Flower Moon.Ā
Itās not that the before credits scene looks entirely, jarringly different from the opening scene, but the hospital scene is surrounded by whites and blue tones, itās darker, and only a single source of light exists. It gives the entire scene a much more frantic, uneasy aesthetic but itās not so far off from the darker muted tones of the next scene that it feels jarring or out of place.Ā
The second big thing I noticed in the episode is the use ofĀ aspect ratio. Iām not 100% sure what aspect ratio the production used exactly, but the use of widescreen as opposed to full screen in my opinion, gives the episode a more cinematic feel to it in comparison to other Thai BLs.Ā
Example, if you look atĀ Century of LoveĀ (2024) it appears to be filmed in the standard full screen - which I believe is 16:9? - whileĀ 4 MinutesĀ is widescreen (thus the black bars at the top and bottom). Widescreen can give a show a more āmovie likeā quality to it which is part of the vibes I get from 4 Minutes.Ā

Onto Greatās actual introduction scene.
Weāre not starting the shot with static movement, but with a cameraĀ panningĀ right. Iāve talked about camera panning and such in BL before and itās something Iāve found doesnāt happen as often as it should. Which is a shame! Itās such a simple technique but it adds so much.Ā
Imagine if we entered the frame with a static center shot, and then a cut to Great sleeping and turning off his alarm clock, and then another cut to above the bed. Think about how much more boring that could be visually.Ā
Instead, we enter the scene with movement, panning over and creating some interesting visual framing.Ā
So hereās our opening shot, do you notice anything interesting? To start, what I like about this shot other than the panning movement in, is that we donāt see Greatās face yet. In fact we donāt see his face in full until about 30 seconds into the scene. This builds anticipation, yeah we all know what Bible looks like, but for the audience who doesnāt this helps build anticipation.Ā
Who is this character? What does he look like? Whatās his deal?Ā
It also engages the audience more, if you notice part of the composition of the shot has Great in the mid-ground slightly blurred out, while the foreground emphasizes the things on his desk. Heās distant from us, the audience, sleeping off his hangover not yet ready to ājoinā the world yet.Ā
Hereās another two more things I like about this shot:
Lines.Ā
UsingĀ lines and shapesĀ can make a scene more visually interesting and invoke different feelings to the viewer. In this shot, I get a sense of symmetry, the camera panning right, lightly drags across the screen alongside the lines below and above Great, almost creating a frame within a frame effect. As if Great is boxed into a clock in and of itself.Ā
You can also see the use of balance in the scene as well, connecting back to that visual theme of symmetry as well as blocking our view of Greatās face. The lava lamb and champagne bottle are almost the same height, which helps create balance in the shot. The champagne bottle informs us Great has been drinking or does drink since itās positioned so close to his bed, whilst also continuing to hide his face away from the viewer.Ā
I also like that the lava lamp is a bright spot of color. The tone of the scene is mostly muted greens, and gray, but the bright orange lava lamp and even the pink champagne bottle draw our attention but donāt overwhelm us either. It provides the scene with some warmth but doesnāt offset the overall tone of the color grading.Ā
And then, the last bit of this shot:
We have Great knocking over the champagne bottom, and turning off his alarm clock. Notice that the alarm clock and the champagne bottle hit those ROT dots almost exactly. Thereās also the use of lines by the length of Greatās arm - I just forgot to add a line Iām a failure, a fake, fml - we see him knock over the bottle, and then we follow the line of his arm directly to the alarm clock which is also a shape, a circle.Ā
I like that they used a clock with a specific notable shape, since by the end of this scene the clock is relevant to the story as a whole. Using a shape makes the clock more visually noticeable and memorable to the audience.Ā
So in the next cut weāre above Great - just like Greatās gonna be above Tyme, fuckin hell Iām corny - in a medium-full shot and thereās a couple things I really like here.Ā
I really like the use of lines here with the bed going in one direction but Greatās body going another. Itās disconcerting, and off kilter a bit.Ā
The use of patterns plus the opposing symmetry, whereas in the previous shot the lava lamp and champagne bottle were providing balance, here one side of the bed is patterned, while the other isnāt. This creates a sense of imbalance and makes the shot more visually interesting.
This medium-full shot at a high angle makes Great smaller, and continues to showcase his dishevelment, keeping him distant from the world itself. Also notice the lack of color here as well.Ā
What could this say about Great as a character? Or his story?Ā
So this next cut is the one that actually inspired me to write this essay to begin with and know what Iāma eat some crow here. I originally said it was a great ROT shot but I was wrooooooong. Itās definitely a center composition shot.Ā
Notice as well, the bed itself is its own shape - rectangle - center in the frame, and yet the shot almost looks unbalanced again because of that singular patterned rug. Itās the only pattern in the entire shot, not even Greatās pillows have noticeable patterns on them.Ā
The above view camera angle in a full shot creates almost an omnipresent feel, as if the audience - or something else? - were looking down upon Great. Whose face we still havenāt seen! It makes him smaller, less powerful, and almost vulnerable. Shots like this are often used in horror films like James Wanās Malignant (2021) where the horror spector will be looking down above the would-be victim.Ā
Another thing I like about this scene though is we have Great moving. It would be simpler and easier to have his phone just by his alarm clock, or under his pillow, but think about how much more visually interesting it is that he has to move down the bed and reach for his phone. It creates action in an actionless low stakes scene.Ā
And now, 30 whole seconds in and weāve finally seen Greatās face!Ā
Fun fact, with the ROT grid the gridlines fall right across Bibleās nipples. Thatās not a film analysis, just something I noticed entirely intentionally. Thanks Madam DirectorĀ Ning Bhanbhassa Dhubthien.
The actual shot is in center composition again, as Great rolls over and reveals his face the camera begins to zoom in.Ā
This creates movement in the scene instead of leaving the camera to statically observe itās now, finally, inviting the audience to meet Great. Pulling us in towards him whereas before we were kept at a distance. Greatās awake and, well as ready to meet the world as somebody with a raging hangover can be.Ā
I also like how Bible is moving constantly in this scene; he rubs his eyes and nose, he twitches his fingers, titles his head back and forth, etc itās nothing revolutionary but itās appreciated.Ā
When the scene cuts, we get this shot:Ā
I didnāt put the red dot on his nipple, it just landed there. This is all Madam Director Ning chepie.Ā
But you can see how Greatās body is landing on all those gridlines pretty solidly. Also in the background we see his alarm clock again, a bright blurred circle in the distance. I also like the angle of this shot, as it creates depth in the frame, with Greatās head being in the foreground his lower body in the mid-ground and the background blurred out.Ā
What follows is Akira appearing in frame. Which was really difficult to capture so I donāt have a screenshot. But what I really like is AkiraĀ enteringĀ the frame out of focus. They could have just cut to Akira, but instead they opted for Akira to enter the frame which is more interesting.Ā
When we do cut, Akira is firmly on one of those dots so we donāt miss them in the frame. I think itās also interesting that weāve pulled out again, into a mid-full shot, hanging above Great, and we see that clear symmetry line again between the patterned rug and the regular carpet.Ā
I also really love that when we got to Great sweet-talking Akira and feeding them weāre not just doing a cut, weāre panning downwards which continues to add movement to the scene. And we get that moneyed sponsor shot!Ā
Durex canāt pay for everything okay?
So in the final bit of this scene we get focus on Great, whoās in focus, before he gets up and leaves the frame where the camera then focuses on the clock behind him.Ā
See how in the first frame the background is all blurred out, but once Great walks out of the frame - again, great that he walks out, movement!! Yāall donāt understand how boring 1000 Stars was for me to watch because of the lack of this stuff okay? - and then the focus shifts to the clock. Which is round.Ā
God I know that sounds so dumb, but imagine the clock without that ring light bit on it, itās just a tiny little rectangle. Not as fun or interesting to look at right? Or as noticeable especially from a distance?Ā
This shift in focus also tells us āthis is importantā whatever āthisā is. The subject of the shot goes from Great to the alarm clock but they are positioned as equally important. Weāre meant to pay attention to this seemingly innocuous item, which we learn later in the episode is time. Weāre meant to remember and note that time will be important to the story - I know with a title like 4 Minutes youād fucking hope time would be important but have yāall ever read Youtube comments? Itās rough out there for visual comprehension okay?Ā
So all in all this scene is only 1 minute and 40 seconds give or take. Itās very short, but I donāt think it was boring at all. I think itās a really solid introduction to a main character. Think, Korn didnāt get this much time to showcase his introduction, his scene is shorter - though also well done - which showcases which character is more of a story priority.Ā
This scene eases the audience into the story, inviting us to wake up into the world like Great is. It uses techniques like lines, shapes, symmetry, color and focus to make what could be a very boring scene into an interesting one.Ā
Thereās so so much I probably and certainly missed, IāmĀ farĀ from an expert, but I hope I was able to articulate what I liked about this scene, and why I think it looksĀ good.Ā
Stay tuned for more if I can manage to focus long enough to breakdown more scenes lol
Also red dots on Bibleās nipples are just funny to me it be what it be.Ā

We are over halfway through 2024, and as usual, I've only had two Taiwanese BLs (Unknown, Anti Reset), so even though I'm sitting on a stack of BLs to watch every single week from other countries, call me Smaug because I need MORE!
Former friends (and possibly lovers) reunite at a funeral after going their separate ways for over a decade, but, honestly, I don't care about the plot because this comes from Hwang Da Seul who was behind Blueming, To My Star, and Where Your Eyes Linger, so I know it's going to be amazing. There is a movie and a series version, and the movie already premiered at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea at the beginning of July. The runtime was 154 minutes, but the series is eight episodes around thirty minutes each and is currently seeking distribution.
My most beloved, Charles Tu, from my favorite BL HIStory 4: Close to You is finally returning to me in the form of a washed-up singer who stepped away from the spotlight due to a tragic event only to be dragged back in by an up-and-coming composer who is also a longtime fan. It is a joint production with Thailand's Star Hunter Entertainment (the company behind Big Dragon, Love Senior, City of Stars, and Sunset x Vibes) and features a side couple of a Thai singer and a Taiwanese agent. It will involve singing, but I'm already too comfortable in my seat with my snacks to care.
The lone GL holding down this list finished filming late last year and Gagaoolala has been releasing BTS images since filming began, so it'll likely land there once it is released. The series is a continuation of the 2021 first season, which people were not thrilled about because of the ending, so this season should solve some of the angst we were left with by exploring the two women actually coming together to navigate life as a couple.
Directed by Liu Kuang Hui, who directed Your Name Engraved Herein, written by the same folks behind The Untamed, and based on Mu Su Li's novel A Certain Someone which is about two boys whose parents are dating and move in together, so the mains go from enemies-to-??? and the only reason for the question marks on a Taiwanese BL is because the word on these BL streets (and his MDL page) is one of the actors works heavily in China, so this might be the reason this one has been was in limbo even though filming finished earlier this year, but the socials are still posting it's coming this year.
This co-production with Japan is about a rich man who falls in love with his hearing-impaired caregiver. It finished filming at the end of May and will have those sweet sweet Taiwanese BL cameos from some Be Loved in House: I Do and Plus and Minus folks PLUS it will be the first cameos for the Kiseki: Dear to Me guys since the company that produced their show is the same one for this show.
Very little is known about the plot of this teacher-student romance, but it comes from the same folks who produced DNA Says Love You and one of the mains, Muji Hsu, was also the lead in 2020's Because of You. Filming finished at the end of May, and the company stated it would be out before the end of the year.
This is based on a novel, Islands, by Lolita Hu, features some well known Taiwanese actors, and for a bit was under the name Sea of Intimacy. It's being presented as an 'older BL' but the MDL summary is sparse of the BL-plot: Hung, a successful entrepreneur, has three intimate relationships: his wife, his mistress, and his girlfriend. The lives of these individuals in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s are intertwined because of romance, but their story extends beyond that. When Hung faces criticism on social media and loses everything, the way they react tells us how they see the world.
These two deal with completely different plots but are together because of one reason: Ray Jiang. He is the director for these two and was the director for Unknown, My Tooth Your Love, and We Best Love. The companies behind them have stated the series are coming next year, but the guess is Ray's busy schedule is part of the hold up since he has a Netflix series in the works and apparently a film featuring Sam Lin (We Best Love) on the way. The Young Gangster is based on a novel and deals with a research assistant gathering information on the mafia (and we know how the mafia works in BLs), while Shooting Star deals with a man wishing that nobody notices him once he returns to his hometown after being fired. The wish backfires and nobody recognizes him, not even his dad or the boy he confessed to in high school! BL Mafia, Sideways Wishes, and Ray Ray are my favorite types of snacks!
A police officer falls in love with a man only to realize that man is the son of a prominent leader on the day of his arranged wedding in which he was hired as security for the event. The series already released a short film of the basic premise for fundraising efforts and festival rounds. Apparently, filming has started on the series, but there is no concrete confirmation from the production company.
Edited to add thanks to @cankersoregirl! This is a sequel to VBL's Anti Reset and began filming in early July. It focuses on Ever 4 who is sent to be a bodyguard for a young rich man only to encounter a rebellious man.
Is this a movie? Is it a series? Is it happening?! Who knows, but last year, it finally got funding and a director attached to it, but the real kicker is Lin Pei Yu is the screenwriter, and she is the writer behind all of my favorite Taiwanese BLs: We Best Love, HIStory 3: Trapped, My Tooth Your Love, Kiseki: Dear to Me, and so much more. Basically, the company struck gold getting her for this story about two archers and best friends. One gets confessed to but admits he actually is in love with his best friend, but before love can happen, the best friend has an accident and falls into a coma. It is based on a novel of the same name, and the plot is way more hefty than this, but I know Lin Pei Yu will make it work!
This is supposed to be four different stories focusing on different seasons, and is rumored to be VBL's next group of shows since the company has stated it wants to continue its formula from last year of releasing slightly connected shows. VBL/Vidol was behind Stay by My Side, VIP Only, You Are Mine, and Anti Reset. Winter is about a scrooge CEO and a florist who is hired to decorate for the CEO's Christmas event. Spring is about two boys meeting on a bus and falling in love over music. Summer is about a market owner and a chef falling in love over food. Autumn is about two former best friends seeing each other ten years after graduating and exploring their hometown together.
It seems to have gotten funding, but it's been quiet since which isn't surprising because when it comes to Taiwanese BLs, nothing is really heard until filming begins or even after it ends. I still have my hopes high because this is *THE* BL for me as it deals with a man who can see colored threads connecting people and one day runs into a policeman whose thread connects to him. The thread between them begins to change color, from silver-grey to yellow, representing friendship, and even to red, representing love. If I have to sell an organ or two to fund this myself, I. Will. Do. It. I NEED THIS!
And this wouldn't be a Petty Post if I didn't include this final one:
I don't care if this a long shot. I don't care if I seem crazy always asking for this. I. Deserve. It. HIStory 3: Trapped ended with our best mafia boy in prison, and it's time he got out! The HIStory franchise has not had a series since 2022's HIStory 5: Love in the Future, and although there have been rumors that a HERstory story might be next, I think bringing back a popular story would be just as good. I will ask for this every chance I can until I get it, and I plan on living a long life, so I got time!
