Tragic Villain – completely aware of their evil but takes little to no pleasure from it and could very well resent the evil they are committing

Noble Demon – a character who will proudly declare themselves evil, but still finds themselves doing good once in a while

Reluctant Monster — The Reluctant Monster usually has no idea that they’re a monster at all. They are often a member of a species that traditionally does nasty things to people, but that is not in their own personal nature 

Broken Ace – A character who is handsome, popular, and mature, but it’s a front he’s viciously maintaining to mask the fact that his self-loathing has reached the level of dangerous unbalance

Affably Evil – A villain who is actually amiable and nice in spite of their intentions

Dark Is Not Evil – A character who looks sinister but is actually good.

Defeat as Backstory: A character suffered a defeat sometime before the main events of the story.

Sympathetic Murder Backstory: A character once killed someone, but for sympathetic reasons—still, they carry guilt over it.

Start of Darkness: A prequel about how the villain came to be who they are.

Being Tortured Makes You Evil: Tortured into evilness. A character who undergoes prolonged torture gives up on their ideals and morality and joins Team Evil.

Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: A character is adorable on the outside, but evil on the inside.

Face–Monster Turn: Being forced to turn evil by factors beyond one’s own free will.

Forced into Evil: A character does evil deeds because someone or something else is giving them no other choice.

Tragic Monster: A character is transformed into a dangerous monster and is miserable because of it.

Used to Be a Sweet Kid: A villain or jerk was a lot nicer when they were younger, but something happened that caused them to grow up to be the bad person they are today.

Villainous Breakdown: The villain reacts to defeat by having a psychotic meltdown.

Never Be Hurt Again: fairly common stock motivation, in which characters who have been abused, betrayed, mistreated or otherwise persecuted in the past are acting to make sure that this sort of thing never happens to them again

Driven to Villainy:  A broken shell of a human being, warped by events around them, and forced into villainy by forces outside their control. 

Fallen Hero: used to be a hero

Jerk-to-Nice-Guy Plot: A plot where a character starts off as a Jerkass, but events change him into a Nice Guy.

Misery Builds Character: Having a character go through absolute hell as a way to strengthen them.

Once Done, Never Forgotten: A character has done something in the past that no one will forget — or let them forget.

Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: just because people forgive doesn’t necessarily mean they will move on. They may hear that they are trying to change their ways, but is still not good enough to make them completely happy again. 

Reformed, but Rejected: desire of the character to leave his evil ways in the past is completely genuine — but the hero still refuses to be “fooled.” All he wants is a chance at a normal honest life. It’s getting people to give him that chance that presents a problem.

Reformed, but Not Tamed: Now genuinely on the side of good, but they retain characteristics or methods that they used when they were evil.

Disastrous date ideas

Something happens that upsets one of the characters and they come to the date feeling angry/upset/ crying.

One of them confesses that they don't love or have any feelings for the other.

They break up during the date.

Someone else your character likes comes to the same place with their date and your character gets jealous

One of them dumps the other during the date

Friends of your character comes to the same place and tease or watch your characters from another table

Your characters make a reservation but when they arrive they're informed there are no free tables.

One of your character creates a romantic setting and cooks meals but unknown to them, the other dislikes the food or is allergic to it.

One of your characters knocks down a drink and it spills.

One of your character is served meal they hate.

Character finds out something horrible about the other that hurts them.

Chr A unintentionally takes Chr B to their workplace

Another character ruins the date. ( An enemy / ex etc)

Chr A gets a panic attack or traumatic flashback from a triggered memory

Someone who wronged or hurt one of the characters in the past sees them

1.) It’s not hard to figure out what to do, there are plenty of resources.

People say you have to get it right, do your research, but … what else are you supposed to research? It’s not like people with more pigment in their skin have completely different personalities than those with less, any more than any individual. It’s frustrating when I can’t even figure out what the heck people are talking about.

Bam. Research step one done for you.

2.) Writing characters of color/minorities is a good thing.

I don’t like the notion that fantasy authors are under some kind of obligation to present ethnically diverse worlds. I’m English, and a fair sized part of English history consists of unwashed beardy white people in mead halls. If I’m inspired by my own history and cultural heritage, then that’s what I’m damn well going to write about. I’m not writing about some other culture just to appease the people who think there aren’t enough black characters in fantasy, or whatever. You want it, you write it. Nothing to do with me.

You’re wrong.

3.) Your all White Fantasy Land Didn’t Exist in Real Life:

…the rather medieval one has more diversity than real medieval Germany probably had […] In a world with medieval means of transport, it just doesn’t seem natural to me to mix dark-skinned people with blue-eyed blondes in one setting. I just try to give the people a colour that fits the place where they live.

You mean like the people from Africa and the Middle east who began to take over Southern Spain, as well as the Jews who were pretty well spread out throughout Europe, the Middle Easterners they would have met on the Crusades, and the incoming Mongol Hordes who spread to the very edges of Eastern Europe before the empire finally collapsed? Don’t forget that Turkey is right there, and the silk road would have gone from Song Dynasty China, through India, and ended in Turkey before moving further westwards into places like Germany. Also the attempts at the Franco-Mongol alliance would have been pretty interesting. (That’s about the 13th century - arguably smack dab in Middle Ages Europe and definite contact between France/Christian Europe and the Mongolian Empire.)

Unless you’re writing everything in the far reaches of Denmark or something, historically speaking, I call bullshit on people who have societies that are only all white ever, because it’s just inaccurate. Consider the relative closeness of Northern Africa to Spain, or Turkey to the rest of Europe, the conquests of Alexander the Great, the Crusades, Slavery existing in Europe, including England, the slave trade, imperialism, Pax Mongolica, The Silk Road, Jewish Diaspora, the Islamic Empire vs The Holy Roman Empire, Egypt, Algeria, China’s sailing across the world, The Maruyan/Gupta Empires of India, tea trades, Columbus sailing in hopes of finding China, etc, etc, etc.

4.) I mean I just don’t believe you anymore. It’s unrealistic. Seriously guys.

You’d think I’d just denied the holocaust or something. Get a grip. All I said was that I’m going to write about my own cultural experience and anyone who thinks I should do otherwise for the sake of political correctness can bugger off.

This isn’t even about being PC this is just not being wrong about everything.
