My friend @nuclear333 asked me how I shaded hair and I promised her a hair shading tutorial, which of course became a hairā¦everythingā¦tutorial.
Lots of great tutorials have already been been made on the subject so hereās me throwing in my own two cents. The usual disclaimers apply: this is how I think of hair when I draw it, and is by absolutely no means the only way, or even necessarily a correct way, to do it. Iām always happy to hear about how others approach the same subject!
The Back and Spine
Some people were curious how I finish my 1H sketches so hereās a little tutorial āØ
Ps: just keep in mind that this is the result of super concentrating for 60min just drawing nothing else.
Oof those action shots are ššš
Action shots like this one need a lot of planning. Letās have a look about how I made this scene!
MAIN ACTION LINE:
The important aspect is the flow. You have to find a way to make the action easy to understand. I chose the main poses, but all of them are following a base action line. This line can have different shapes and curves, but I chose one that follows left to right , then down: occidental reading flow.
But itās not over yet!
SECONDARY ACTION LINES:
Okay these bad boys make the « oh wow this is fluid » effect. Each characters have their own motion trail, based by the main action line. It mostly affects the elements like the capes, the hair and the particles in that case.
*GASP*
YES, Iām shook too. Battle drawings are so fun to make!
Comic where the fight scene is: Wanted part 17
I jotted down for a friend of mine some tips and notes on how I approach drawing hair, and things I keep in mind while doing so, and thought Iād share. There are loads of other ways to do it, and the learning never stops, so I hope this helps!

I'm kinda ashamed to ask this, but could you make a tutorial on how to draw hands? ;A;
omg dont be ashamed at all!! Hands are generally tough to get used to, lots of artists struggle with it! so dont be ashamed i feel you.
and I actually have made a hand anatomy guide before in fact! If you want to get better at drawing hands I def recommend you learn the basic anatomy first. Please check out the ones I made, I try to make it simple and easy to understand:
Artistic Anatomy: Hands Part 1
Artistic Anatomy: Hands Part 2
Thereās my guide to the anatomy, but hereās some more tips that Iāve noted to myself that Iād like to include
First off, Iād like to just note on the fingers: if you pay close attention to your own hand, you may notice the fingers are ever ever so slightly curved inward. Itās a very subtle detail, but I noticed that, despite how slight it is, it can make a hand look more lively, and less stiff.
Second, theĀ āMā on the palm! Your hand moves in many ways, and because it does it creates creases in your hand. The most prominent creases appear to make an M shape; this is handy to remember for what Iām going to talk about next. (It also could be a āWā I guess, or to be more specific aĀ ā )X(Ā ā; just think of it in whatever way helps you remember!)
SO now that you see the M, draw your hand as a basic blocked shape and add your details. As you do, you can see that the M divides the palm into four basic parts!
When the hand moves, parts A, B, or C of the palm, alone or in different combos, will create the general poses that the hands do normally. These parts are the parts that move, with D being stationary, no matter what!
Hereās a chart of all the possible combos. Once you have down what part of the hand moves for a certain pose, you can change up the fingers and tweak it a bit to do what you need to make it more specific!
This is simply my method of drawing hands. God knows there are hundreds of tutorials out there by other artists, but personally, this way helps me the best (after learning the anatomy first).Ā
This way I can divide the hand and combine the parts in any such way I need!Ā
Hands take a lot of effort to grapple, and you need to practice them a lot, especially foreshortening of the hand; thatās really something you need to learn through your own studies. Look at your own hands, draw hands from life, from magazines, shows, comics; just draw hands! Youāll eventually figure out a method that works best for you. So to get better at drawing hands; draw hands!! And donāt stress over it, have fun with it!
