Dick, wailing in dismay: When I asked you to get along, this isn't what I meant--
Jason, in the background recording: đđ
Cass and Steph have most definitely joined in. Barbara was going to stay out of it, but then Dick did something to piss her off. Alfred has dealt with this feral family for generations and couldn't care less as long as they maintain decorum. And Bruce is too busy chugging Expresso and hearing colors to pay attention to what is going on.
Okay, but hear me out:
Murder baby Damian, but for whatever reason, his first attempt at Tim's life is put on pause, so they never have that interaction. Instead, before Damian can come up with a new plan, Tim (who's kinda excited he now isn't the baby of the family) offers to train him in detective work for when Damian finally gets the mantle of 'Robin' as a way to bond with him.
"Why train your enemy, Drake?"
"We're brothers, not enemies. Besides, Robin has always been a mantle to pass down. I'm certainly not going to keep it in my twenties or thirties. And other than Bruce, I'm the best detective in the family."
"Very well, Drake, I shall accept your tutelage for the time being."
Damian accepts, of course. Not only can he study Drake for his weaknesses, he will also improve his own skill set. It's worth the wait for Robin. By the time Damian's done, there will be no doubt that he is the superior bat.
Unfortunately, he actually grows fond of Timothy. While he will inevitably get close with Richard, just like in canon, Timothy is a breath of fresh air for when Richard is being too overbearing, especially when it comes to things like 'socializing,' and 'making friends.'
When his father dies, and Timothy declared him actually lost to time, Richard doesn't believe him, can't believe him, because the hope is too painful. Timothy still gives Damian Robin, because, "I'm barely holding on as Batman as it is. I can't handle Robin being gone for potentially months at a time, halfway around the world."
During his partnership with Richard, truly becoming his brother-son, Richard introduces the ideas of pets to him. Damian loves animals, and having and taking care of a creature that could potentially survive on its own, but will have a much better quality of life under his care, speaks to him. He has Alfred and Titus and about half a dozen other stray animals that usually stay for about a week while he nurses them to health at any given moment, but he feels like he should officially have another pet.
Que the whole thing with his grandfather, and Timothy getting kicked out of the top of a skyscraper. He comes home with proof, and the Justice League brings his father home. And as Dick basically refuses to let anyone leave the mansion for the foreseeable future, Damian realizes several facts:
1.) Timothy is a human, and humans are animals.
2.) While Timothy has somehow survived until now, he wouldn't recognize self-care if it slapped him in the face.
3.) Timothy's quality of life will improve if someone is taking care of him because he cannot be trusted to do it for himself. (Is it a coincidence that he loses organs when he is away from the family? Damian thinks not.)
4.) Damian has gotten good at taking care of animals.
Ergo, Timothy is now Damian's pet. Tim doesn't know what to do and simply humors him. Besides, it's nice when someone actually bothers to give him a plate of foods that he likes when he gets hyper focused on work and forgets to eat. That, and while he is exasperated every time Damian tranqs him, those are still the best sleeps of his life.
Jason finds it hilarious. Damian doesn't understand Richard or his father's reactions.
"Damian, Tim can take care of himself."
"Barely. Father, now that I am in charge of his sleep schedule, there aren't as many dark circles under his eyes. Even Alfred has commented that Timothy consumes less caffeine."
"Damian, he can't be your pet."
"Why not?"
"Tim's your brother; he's family."
"So are you saying that Alfred and Titus aren't family?"
Arisu being over emotional and basically having enough feelings for both him and Chishiya and saying things like "we're very upset over this" fully crying while Chishiya just nods sagely, blank faced, by his side.
In the past couple of months Iâve seen a lot of people genuinely confused about one or the other ship existing, so I wanted to explain some common reasons characters might get shipped.
But before we get into it: The point is usually just good, plain old fun! The entertainment of them being together !
And for entertainment and fun, it doesnât matter whether theyâve even been in the same room or not! Hell, it doesnât even matter if theyâve been in the same universe or not! Basically: Itâs all not that serious and the ppl harassing creators/actors/fans about said ships are usually the minority and frowned upon!
First of all, there are different ways in which people enjoy that ship:
In canon, aka it either is canon or they want it to be canon
Half canon, this means either post canon or if a very specific thing would have happened differently within canon
Canon divergent, aka itâs only enjoyable in theory or alternative universes and they donât actually want it to happen within canon
In other words, there are different ways in which people support this type of relationship
It is the perfect relationship and everyone should strive to find and be this kind of love
While they have their flaws, this is a realistic way a healthy(ish) relationship can come out on the other end of all the horrors tm
This is (somewhat) toxic but in the universe/story line it makes sense and is the best possible outcome for them
This is the truly worst thing that could come out of it for the both of them but thatâs why it is so interesting
Usually it boils down to these emotions:
It would be funny if they go together.
It would shift the impact of all that angst and trauma
It would be super cute. Plain old romcom vibes. Specially if the of story is not that at all and you just want something good for them.
Some basic reasons, that are more about the concept of them than actually them: :
They are fan favourites
They are both hot
Everyone else in the group is coupled up
They fit a certain stereotype/common trope
They resemble another popular ship juuuuust enough
The actors have played a couple/ship in another show
Spite! To annoy the author/other fans
Some personal reasons of the individual fan:
Reminds fan of their own crush
Fan relates to some aspects of their story
Fan relates to some aspects of the characteristics
Character looks like them/ like their crush
Based on the characters/stories design
They claim to hate/dislike/annoy each other but are somehow always found in each others business (willingly or not)
Opposites attract: They have opposing color schemes, personalities and/or views. The more differences the better.
Parallels: They have the same color schemes, personalities and/or views. The more similarities the better.
Based on their relations
You just want something good for this character and they (other character(s)) ARE that something good.
You just want something annoying for this character and they (other character(s)) ARE that something annoying.
Them being together would annoy this other character to noooo end
Even tho they donât interact on screen (often), there is evidence that they did so off screen: they keep up a certain level of relationship (good or bad) despite everything else going on
Purely about the characters
They donât pay attention to anything or anyone else nearly as much as they do about each other, especially ppl they should objectively care more about.
Theyâre the only ones who survived/left to deal with the aftermath. Even if they didnât talk much prior to this, this is something to bond over. To keep the memory alive.
The expectations set on them are/were the same. And despite the different support systems and coping mechanisms⌠the other is truly the only one who could even find a glimpse of understanding of what theyâre going through.
Yin and yang: a perfect mixture of parallels and opposites: Theyâve gone through the same thing but deal with it widely differently. OR They come from widely different backgrounds and reasoning but end up at the same conclusion.
BECAUSE theyâre so codependent they just wouldnât make sense with anyone else, regardless of wether they themselves make sense
BECAUSE it is unhealthy and toxic and itâs interesting to explore such a relationship
BECAUSE if theyâd be in literally any other genre/time theyâd be fine. Nothing this bad wouldâve ever happened if theyâd just lived in another universe.
Why not ? Itâs fiction.
These are all the reasons I can come up with at the top of my head but feel free to add!
Alas I want to encourage everyone to be open minded! Either to genuinely try to understand why a ship exists or, if you donât want to waste your time on sth. youâre sure you donât like, just filter and block the ship and their fans!
None of us can afford to waste our very limited free time on arguing with and harassing others about something FICTIONAL âŚthat we donât even like. Instead, please focus on making and/or supporting art about YOUR ship! This is not only much nicer to the fans you donât support but also to yourself! Positive interactions will result in more positive interactions after all! Mostly.
Artemis: I do NOT have a soft spot for Percy!! Demos: When Percy and Apollo started dating, you gave Apollo the shovel talk. Artemis: Well, my brother has a literal garden of lovers, obviously it was necessary! Demos: Not to mention, when Apollo visits, you go outside of your tent to greet him and you never let him stay long. Demos: Percy has a bed inside your tent for whenever he visits, and he's stayed with you and your Hunters for weeks on end. Demos: Just admit it, Arty. Artemis: No đ
I didnât realize you were the person who did the fanfiction tag drinks.
ahah yeah that's meeee!!
listen i get ppl are deeply into the whole âvoldemort is far more powerful than harryâ-thing because yeah, he is, but i also think harry should be allowed to bully him extensively. âpowerplay thisâ, âpowerplay thatâ no! harry has no urge to be more powerful than voldemort! harry just wants to bully him!
doesnât matter if harry ends up on his arm or through some convoluted fanfic logic in his head during the events of the series after he passes. harryâs sole goal is Ridicule The Dark Lord. he reminds voldemort daily that he got beaten by 1) a baby, 2) an 11yo boy with fire hands (apparently), 3) a 12yo boy with a sword and one (1) fang, 4) a 14yo boy who could run really quickly, and 5) a 17yo, malnourished, exhausted boy with a borrowed wand. he tells voldemort repeatedly that veeâs 15yo self bragged to harryâs 12yo self (no sword or fang yet) that he decided on his name change via anagram, like itâs cool. he reminds voldemort often that âlord flight from deathâ is a bit on the nose for a new name. he always says that whatever voldemort does is âno friend behaviourâ. he tells voldemort things like âyou know all of your followers except bella and barty would sell you to the devil for one corn chip rightâ and voldemort, without fail, will think âNO. THATâS THE THING IâM SENSITIVE ABOUTâ. heâs yelling âHA CRINGEEâ about everything voldemort does. itâs devastating.
Hot take, but kenhina is my favorite haikyuu ship because their dynamic is simultaneously "I'll give you my jacket because you're cold and we'll hold hands because you're uncomfortable with PDA and I respect you and your boundaries," but also, "I want to cut you open and crawl inside your ribcage."
"I'll buy you stuff because I love giving you nice things," but also, "I'd like to (lovingly) dissect you under a microscope until all your vulnerabilities are exposed."
Ok I have one for you that I think is hilarious to think about.
As always expect no cannon here.Â
It starts a month or two after Tim Drake, age 9, started to take pictures of Batman and Robin (Still Dick Grayson). Tim very much wants a sibling, but has not gathered the courage to ask his parents. Â
He is out, taking pictures, thinking about how he wants a sibling as his path crosses Jason Todd (six months homeless). Tim takes this as a sign and, over the course of about three weeks, lures Jason home (treating him much like a feral cat). Once Jason is safely in Drake Manor, Tim semi- forcibly (Jason is not against it per say, but is a little confused) adopts him. Â
Timâs hacking is good enough that he is able to get back dated adoption records, a news announcement, Two interviews with Jack and Janet Drake about adopting Jason (credited to a journalist who died a month later in a rogue attack) inserted into all the correct places, and got Jason enrolled in Gotham Academy with Tim (backdated the enrollment records too). Â
They live together in Drake manor for four months before Timâs parents get back. Tim straight up gaslights them. Without even flinching âWhat do you mean you donât remember Jason?â and âOf course Jason has been here for years, hereâs the interview you didâ and âAdopting him was such good optics for the companyâ
And it works (By the by, Mrs. Mac fully supports Timâs slow abduction and adoption of Jason and is pleased to lie to the Drake parents about it).Â
Within two days Janet Drake is half convinced that Jack tricked her into adopting his illegitimate son. They go to a gala and, due to elite Gothamite weirdness, no one is willing to admit they had never met the older Drake boy before, Jason playing along seamlessly. By the time the Drakes leave again, Janet is congratulating herself on convincing Jack to take in his illegitimate child (who has impeccable grades, and apparently inherited her appreciation for literature) to accompany her son. Particularly since Jason was good enough to understand that Tim was the Drake industry heir.Â
Jack tends to hyper focus on archaeology and lives in a near constant state of âThat sounds fake, but I donât know enough to dispute itâ. Loves his family though. Janet accidentally convinces him that Jason must be his, never mind that Janet was his highschool sweetheart and the only person he had ever had sex with. He is not stupid, but is used to being around his genius wife and son and not understanding how they reach their correct conclusions. So just goes with it.Â
Both boys go out to watch/take pictures of/ stalk Batman and Robin. A few years after Dick becomes Nightwing, Stephanie is adopted by Bruce and becomes Robin. Meanwhile two unknown vigilantes, BlueJay and Ketu (named for the Hindu Winged Serpent that represent Karmic collections both good and bad) start to operate solely in Crime Alley and seem to make a game of evading the Bats and Birds. Â
Jason and Tim Drake take a particular interest in bettering Crime Alley, creating outreach programs and hiring for Drake industries and education programs with their parents' bemused backing (When Jason is 16 and Tim is 14, Tim discovers that several of the board members had been embezzling funds and prove it. The resulting shakeup still leaves Janet and Jack in charge on paper, but their instructions are âdo whatever Jason and Tim sayâ)
"Shipping Regulily is the same as shipping Snily."
No, it's not. And here's why:
Snape and Lily started out differently than Regulus and Lily. Snape was her childhood friend. While Lily probably had muggle friends, he was the only one to understand what she was going through when she had bouts of accidental magic. He showed her she wasn't a freak like her older sister was saying. Which is why what happened between them was a betrayal. He was already her friend, and he called her the worst racial slur possible against muggleborns (in public, no less), because he was embarrassed when she stood up for him like the good friend she was. Because it wasn't just about calling Lily names. It was the fact that he thought poorly about muggleborns, and Lily was just the exception.
And instead of taking that moment as a learning experience and turning neutral, at the very least, with the hope that they could restart their friendship if he shows he's actually changed, Snape doubles down. He joins Voldemort and moves up the ranks. There's a train of thought that if Voldemort hadn't killed Lily Potter, then Snape would have remained a death eater, and I agree with it whole-heartedly.
Compare that to Regulus, who was canonically kind to his house elf, a creature most are dismissive of at best and downright abusive to at worst, despite growing up in the Black House with Walburga of all mothers. Would he have ingrained prejudices due to his upbringing? Of course. But he is willing to change, and that is the difference. He sacrificed his life to betray everything his family wanted for him in order to help stop Voldemort.
The best part? He wasn't Lily's friend originally. Their relationship could start of with cool indifference and being coldly polite with each other. It's only after spending time with Lily does Regulus start to critically think about his prejudices. And Lily, who realizes this, is more than happy to show him that there is more to muggleborns and muggles than his family thinks.
Regulily is different than Snily because when Regulily gets together, whether romantic or platonic, Regulus has already faced his internal prejudices. There isn't an undertone of, "I dislike muggleborns, but I like you."
Of course, this is simply my opinion.
