I have to ask what you think Zoey was up to while she was in America. I'm so fascinated by that part of her life. And the allusions in Golden that she feels trapped between both her American and Korean worlds.
boy oh boy thank you for asking inky.
There's so much about Zoey that I find fascinating because I can relate to her a lot at least personality wise.
okay i think Zoey's life was fairly interesting and that her parents tried their best to support her as a culturally american kid alongside korean. Obviously being first gen immigrants they probably had a harder time understanding her, especially with the neurodivergency but they probably tried their best with her.
I think she got into hip hop and pop rock as a kid because her parents put her in piano lessons or something and the interest just grew from there. Growing up in a place like LA meant a lot of cultural diversity so Zoey probably learnt more about music from firsthand accounts of other kids alongside better general exposure than she would have had in korea.
I would say the trapped bit is definitely there but golden being what it is, a pretense, Zoey's bigger problem laid with her neurodivergency. While yeah she probably had to try really hard to fit in while still being korean and felt other a lot, her main problem laid with how people viewed her and weren't able to understand her and how she tried to connect. Unable to express herself music was probably a solid bridge for her to stand on. Steady, comforting and helpful.
She probably did amazing as a kid and got put on the gifted track, maybe even skipped a grade but she probably had burn out by the time she got to high school so had to catch up an practice a lot more. I doubt she had a good time, she probably just spent all her free time sitting in the hallways jamming to music and writing or producing.
I would say she also went all in with the skating, has a pretty chill group of acquaintances she skates a lot with and hangs out with. She probably played music for them and I would assume it's a fairly diverse group that actually made her feel included because I can't hear the thought of her suffering like i did through school all by herself.
Her korean's is good too i would assume, through years of practice as an idol yeah but she probably had a solid foundation in the form of summers or vacations in korea, visiting koreatown often and having to learn the language by speaking at home. This is my thing but I think Zoey really tried with the cultural aspects when she first became a trainee, like she didn't want to bomb and end up with no friends like in America so she went all in with being respectful and doing korean things.
Her parents probably work in media or a media adjacent industry because Burbank is the media capital of the world and there's no way a family moved from Korea just because, they either got job offers or wanted to work in the media sector. This leads me to the assumption that they supported Zoey's dreams and knowing the industry they understood that Zoey had better chances as a kpop idol than a western artist.
I would like to think Zoey also got to go on set and stuff once in a while and she ended up really liking it. Which is why she even considered being an idol. Also the sunshine sisters exposure, her parents probably spent ample time introducing her to music and encouraging her pursuits as long as she still kept up her grades.
Maybe they're a musical oriented family or maybe they just saw baby Zoey hammering a xylophone and decided she would be a music icon. But I do think her family played a role in why she ended up picking music, I would say that she got into producing after kids at school raved about SoundCloud and she learnt more instruments too.
I also think she loves a lot of American things alongside korean and has a bit of the American spirit inscribed in her soul. In Korea she probably has to play the American stereotype a little, a cowboy hat here a howdy there, a coffee in her hand and a eagle on her chest but she learns to make it fun.
I think she has an interesting mix of cultural tendencies because of her background and sometimes does things that thoroughly confuse Mira and Rumi as upper class koreans.
Fans probably love her a lot more for it because iit gives them something to talk about. I would also like to think she ended up with a lot of interesting political and social opinions as a queer, neurodivergent, second gen Asian immigrant which the public cannot handle so she has to keep a reign on it all but it still shines through.
There's a lot more I want to say regarding this but I didn't want the post to be too long, so I hope this was helpful! If you have more thoughts feel free to send me an ask or share
i think zoey's neurodivergent too, not me projecting at all its just there.
the divorce arc would also make sense for her feeling never enough because no matter whose side she picks she can't catch a break. we see a glimpse of that when she's struggling to choose between accepting Rumi or not. (it's really subtle but I love how that with Zoey they make it a lot more clear that she's just mad about the lying not the demonness necessarily)
I totally agree with the gifted kid track too, just feels right for Zoey because her rhyme game goes really hard amongst other things
Is Zoey a child of divorce?
She's also (at least I think so) neurodivergent and is afraid she comes off as "too much" so I wonder if she blames herself for putting strain on her parent's relationship?
Her not enough mentality, being seen as the glamorous State-sider by the fans, combined with her role as lead lyricist (which she's clearly excels at) makes me wonder if she was also labeled a gifted kid in school since we often see her get paired with school imagery particularly during Golden.
it pisses me off because they went almost nowhere with the man with no eyes, who has been an allegory for childhood horrors and what's another horror Tai has as a child? Religious trauma.
There was so much more that could have been explored with her, Akilah,Mari and Lottie but we don't get any of that and it makes me angry.
i sstarted to get more invested in the show because of Tai's adult storyline in season 1 and nothing much happened there. We're not given many explanations or a satisfying conclusion.
And even the whole Melissa fake death seems like a copout to me, it would have worked better with even Travis but nope. He dies and no one really mentions him again save for in a minor explanation scene.
Travis is such an interesting character who went through some of the most horrible things. Like having to eat his brother, not being able to help his dad because he's already dead and be assaulted by the people he lives with. I mean we're getting so much of Jeff so it's not a stretch to ask for the actual dude who was out there with them, someone who wasn't quite part of the group and could add more to the narrative.
It's hard to watch this episode thinking how really yellowjackets writers love to kill women of colour then make another white character more important in the show. They really did it, it is really Melissa and if the show continues Hilary will take a bigger part of it. They really did it.
And fandom mostly doesn't want to discuss show's problem with racism, yeah.
we as a collective need to appreciate yelena's eyeliner and her choice to wear that specific one more because homegirl was getting her ass beat, having a mental breakdown on the street and running from evil government people AND fighting a dude that is literally bulletproof. that thing didn't smudge once, it remained on point and flawless throughout even when she cried
amen.
Rumi would absolutely show up and show out against male idols when it comes to variety shows that require physical fitness
She has to look good for her girls and humble the mfs that keep flirting with them
Just saw the Jurrasic World trailer and I'm glad this movie is coming out now because the younger me wouldn't be able to survive both ScarJo and Jonathan Bailey looking this good...
idk why but Rumi's ooooohhhh after the Sajas finish your idol is so funny to me. Like she totally has practice randomly vocalizing like that, not because she's a singer warming up but because she and the girls vocalize long notes when they're particularly bored.
like in the practice room and at home they're just sitting there "what to do what to do" and then collectively just start making noises to see who makes the weirdest ones and who makes the nicest sounding ones.
makes me lowkey think that she had no idea how to get everyone's attention so she was like ik! if i do this the girls will know it's me and rolled upto the namsan tower ready to yell like she's the spirit from frozen ii
Mistyjax nation, let's cry together. This would've been so interesting
what could’ve been…
The Travis x Akilah siblingism is so dear to me. They're just two shaylas trynna keep it together while their insane older sister (Lottie) is helping them commune with ancient spirits.
They're sibling substitutes, they're each other's understudies for their failed blood family relations. Go Travis Akilah siblingism, y'all adorable, I need more.
'Wait... is Mari kinda hot?' Me after ep1 and 2
'Mari's hot and a dumbass which I stan because I am sick of the uber intellectuals who I've fallen for and keep breaking my heart.' Me after ep3
She's such a little shit can I marry her? I have never been this into someone who 100% a moron. I can officially say I am moro-sexual because why am I already on one knee?
lol it's crazy, I was reading your new chapter and thinking this girl probably sleeps knocked out and dead to the world like she just survived the hunter exam, can't believe it's canon
This is how Macie sleeps btw, officially making that part of my canon
The end justifies the means, but what if there never is an end? All we have is means.
