The man is allowed to feel upset over the fact that people HARASS him over shit like this. If y’all don’t know how STORYTELLING, PRODUCTION, AND MARKETING work then that’s ok. You’re not a part of the industry then why would you know that /gen. But let’s put our thinking caps on for a second:
Tim is the main storyteller of this show. Just like your favorite authors/fic writers, they build these stories and choose to share them with us. If we’re fans then great! More people like what I created! “I mean I really do it for myself in the end”. And isn’t that the truth about all things artists create. He CARES about this story and these characters. If he thought that this 20 second clip wasn’t moving the story forward then let’s trust that his judgement on the story HE CREATED is the right one.
Now, we also have something very important to discuss: the corporate bosses. Right now it’s ABC, and though they have been MILES better with this than Fox, keep in mind that this is still a business. When creating promo for a show, the marketing department chooses what material they’ll use to create the ads & stills they’ll share on socials, network tv, and with the press. “I have no control over what the network promo department culls from raw footage to create a promo for an episode that isn't finished.” The ABC team was the one with the final decision to promote the episode using THOSE SCENES. Call it whatever you want, but one of the biggest selling points for the show are BuckandEddie. Yes, it’s shitty that they used a pairing that they KNOW has a huge fandom and will get them their viewer count up, but it’s a fucking marketing strategy. Take it up with capitalism if you don’t like it idk what else to tell you about that. Because, and I want to make this CRYSTAL CLEAR, they didn’t bait us with a queer ship… because one half of that duo is already in a queer relationship and I think we are way past the point of the legitimacy of the ‘queerbaiting’ argument when one of the characters is now CANONICALLY queer.
No, buddie is not the main pairing as of right now (‘cause I know how touchy people can get with the timeline of when/if that’s happening). Buck was just made canonically queer and whether you like his partner now or not, it should NOT diminish the fact that this storyline is important (both for Buck and for audiences). Appreciate it for what it is (your character getting some CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, him being HAPPY, and the journey that this story will take us on) and stop fighting with people left right and center just because your faves aren’t the ones smooching on prime time tv (coming from a buddie fan who knows that this is larger than our ship).
Something that I haven’t seen many people talk about is how to get clips that won’t spoil the main point of the episode. And wouldn’t you know it, buddie wasn’t the focus of the episode. The MADNEY WEDDING was. We saw a glimpse of what happened to Chimney and clips of Maddie getting dispatch to help her find Chim. But we couldn’t see more because they were the focal point of the episode. An episode titled ‘There goes the groom’. So, combining the marketing point that is buddie with them not being able to use many things from The Wedding since it would give away what happens in the episode, one of the easiest choices (in the editing room, looking at what scenes to use) was to use the bachelor party as the main promo. The hotel scene was a literal MONTAGE, they used what they could from one of the least important parts of the episode. Those clips were also a goldmine because they were the comedic relief of the episode as a whole (the promos hinted at angst, yet many theories were incorrect because we didn’t know how deep the episode would actually go) so it was an overall easy sell.
I agree with everyone that yes, I would’ve LOVED to have seen the karaoke scene. Yes, it sucks that we might never be able to see it. But I also think that what we got was beautiful. It was fun and sad and had all the components of a great story, told through 43 minutes, on prime time tv. If you can’t put aside your disappointment over scenes being cut, dialogue being changed, or any other VERY COMMON THINGS that happen during the behind the scenes of making something like a show or a movie, then I loathe to think about if you consume any of your media in a healthy way. Not everything has an ulterior motive, a hidden meaning, or a deeper backstory. Some things are just there to look pretty or be funny.
Also, life goes on. There will be another episode, another season, another show. You’ll go to work or school or the park, and though this may be something you spend a good chunk of your day thinking about, it’s not something that will pay your bills (unfortunately) or help you book a doctor’s appointment or help you send your CV to a potential employer. This show means the world to people, but it shouldn’t be your whole world.
Thanks for coming to my tedtalk ig~
yall really realize that one can be both a buddie and a bucktommy shipper right? that they’re not mutually exclusive?
bro I’m literally just vibing. i’m thrilled to be here. we out here taking in every stage of bi buck like the gift it is and saying thank you can I have some more.
has buck ever had a crush? like genuinely. like an actual "oh my god i like you so bad i feel like an idiot" sort of crush? because he was too busy trying to get over his unhealthy relationship with sex with abby so even that relationship was a little maybe a little heavier. the boundaries buck felt like he had to set in order to be with her because he didn't trust himself. and then obviously everything that happened after that was fast or unhealthy or fast and unhealthy and just. buck likes tommy. he's got a big ol' crush on the guy and he uses cheesy lines when he talks to him ("the fire was a beast" "so are you") and he's all flushed and rosy cheeked and smiley as he goes up to kiss him like. buck might've loved his exes but we've never seen him like someone so openly. never in a way that was so joyful and honest especially. and just. light.
9-1-1 ON ABC + QUEER CHARACTERS
Let’s not go the “if Tommy were a woman” route please. The North remembers. Y’all did nothing but belittle and antagonize every actress who was once paired with Oliver and Ryan because you wanted your ship to happen. The exact same thing you want done to Louis. So let’s not try and justify your outrage by gaslighting and rewriting history.
Buck is now canonically bisexual, with a boyfriend that everyone likes, portrayed by and actor who seems to be a sweetheart. We have no reason to hate this couple. We have no reason to not want to see them thrive. This couple will 100% give us every bit of representation you claimed to be fighting for.
HE HAS A BOYFRIEND!!!!!
bucktommy kiss 7.06
'sorry i'm late. that fire was a beast.'
'so are you.'
"eddie and buck? looks like it's not gonna happen. looks like it's the tommy and buck show." kenny fghdsjkgfhd
I know we're all very excited about all of Oliver's interviews, but the next episode isn't about buddie or bucktommy - it's about Maddie and Chim getting married after years of love and pain and loss and hope.
It's about Maddie marrying a man who loves her, who respects her, who trusts her, who doesn't control her, who wants Maddie to just be Maddie.
It's about Chimney marrying a woman who loves him, who values him for exactly who he is, who laughs at his jokes, who overcame hell and came out the other side a little battered and bruised but still alive, who loves him for exactly who is he and has never once asked him to change.
It's about a couple who fought through abusive ex-husbands and near death experiences and PPD and breaking up but still loving each other so much and getting back together because being apart was never going to work for them.
It's about a family that deserves happiness finally getting to celebrate that after years of so much drama.
So again, I know we're all excited about the buddie and bucktommy of it all, but let's not forget what 7x06 is about - Maddie and Chimney getting married.
On another note to what’s happening rn in the 911 fandom:
Media literacy is very important, and I’m choosing to believe that people just never learned what this means. So, in light of recent developments, I’m sharing one of my favorite YouTube channels where you can learn about good/bad representation of queer folk in mainstream media. I encourage you to watch it for a multitude of reasons, but the main one is:
If you ever actually cared about seeing queer characters on your screen and it NOT being a fetish you have for some god forsaken reason, then you’ll sit down and learn that putting aside your ship wars and appreciating something as monumental as a character getting a healthy queer sexual awakening is more important than your faves kissing or not.
Did you ever actually love the character? Or did you just like them if the writers made your own headcanons come true?
(Yes, this is about Evan Buckley.)
Hot take: if you are one of those people that would literally have buddie or nothing at all (bi!buck being canon) then you are no better than the Buckley parents… I’ll repeat that one more time, in case it didn’t register with you:
Nothing Buck ever does is good enough for you: him discovering this new part of himself and exploring it isn’t enough, him being giddy and infatuated and HAVING AND HONEST TO GOD CRUSH isn’t enough, him being HAPPY isn’t enough.
He isn’t enough. Perhaps he never was enough for you.
But he is everything and more to so many people. His story means THE WORLD to so many people. People that literally never watched the show before are either now watching it or have just heard about it BECAUSE of his current storyline. This story matters. He matters. And if you can’t put aside your ship for one second to appreciate how huge this is, both inside and outside of the show, then you never actually loved this character in the first place.
people saying tommy not dressing up to fit the theme is a red flag bc he’s dismissive of buck when he literally said he’s on standby for work so why would he?? can yall be normal????
what do you think is the sweetest and most well written part of Buck and Tommy's relationship? When they kissed in the first episode they had any kind of meaningful interaction or when Tommy ditched Buck on the curb after their first date and Buck somehow ended up feeling like the asshole about it. If that's a sweet and well written relationship Eddie and Marisol are When Harry Met Sally.
Oh no! They kissed after one episode! How could I forget the only way to write a good on screen romance is to spend at least half a season having them dance around their feelings with enough space for the holy ghost?
And yeah tommy left buck (a grown man in his 30s btw) outside the restaurant, because rather than just not mention they were on a date, buck made up a very weird and uncomfortable lie. bffr that's a "yeah sorry, I just got a text my grandma died," level red flag. I'd have clocked out at the ally comment, and tommy managed to turn that around into flirting!
But anyway thanks for the opportunity to list some sweet bucktommy details so far:
just buck's entire face when he talks to/about tommy, that man is smitten! ((x) if you need visual proof). he has the world's biggest crush on his boyfriend and i want him to be insufferable about it!
tommy's little "so that was okay?" after their kiss kills me every time, it's gentle but also confident and forward (which i think compliments buck's personality very well)
I mean tommy felt so bad about being the cause of problems between buck and eddie, he went to buck's house in person to apologise.
speaking of gentle. Evan. I need, need someone to pick tim minear's brain about the decision to have tommy consistently call him evan, the implications are driving me insane.
the way their relationship is tied up with, imo, one of the most interesting coming out arcs i've seen on tv in years. bi buck is very special to me and like it or not tommy is a part of that.
I love the detail of buck getting tommy's order wrong, they could've easily gone the "omg, you got my order right the first time, we're meant to be!" route, but imo there's something refreshing about showing love as this thing you have to work to build vs something that magically happens to you.
and the invisible string/full circle symbolism potential is insane. The fact chimney saved tommy's life, the parallel of tommy needing to leave the 118 to find himself which in turn left a spot in the exact place buck needed to do the same. The way buck is the reason that chimney meets maddie and then years later chim (potentially) returns the favour. They've stumbled into a writing goldmine here and i think they'd be fools to waste it.
look i'll readily admit i've no clue where they might be taking bucktommy, tbh i don't think tim minear knows, but they've sure as hell crammed a lot of potential into those 2 + a bit episodes. That's what people are responding to.
all of yall jumping ship dont understand the way this works. ships are for life, a full time job. you MARRY your ship, what the fuck is it with bucktommy shippers? abandoning buddie bc what? a white, strong, "handsome" (he isnt even fucking handsome) man showed up? talk about RACISM! shame on you all, shame!
jesus you must be fun at parties
Tommy isn’t Bucks bi training wheels. There isn’t going to be any tacky infidelity plot lines, especially for a character who just accepted himself as bisexual. Tommy isn’t Ghostface. There’s no secret murder/revenge plot. He’s also not going to leave Buck because he’s the new bi boy in town and doesn’t have his degree in the University of Bisexual arts.
They’re boyfriends who will kiss and hold hands and hug a lot and get physically/romantically close and they’re gonna go on dates and have intimate conversations and flirt a lot and kiss some more and probably have hot firefighter and pilot sex. That’s all.
Get on board or get out of the way!!!!
reblog and put in the tags what fic of yours you are most scared ryan and oliver could have potentially read
I would also kill and die for him
Ahh Lou stop we have two weeks I’m gonna dieeee
no but buck is clearly very bambi on ice about this which is completely understandable because it's new and exhilarating but also a bit scary right and he doesn't want to fuck it up so he just keeps saying words truly any words no filter whatsoever and what does tommy do? he stays patient and kind and lets buck talk but reassures him and then segways the conversation into something more comfortable by shamelessly flirt with buck and it clearly works too
buck: im an ally *raises fist*
tommy, under his breath: smash
"i could never replace you" "my attention?" "so that was okay?" "i think you're adorable" "i didn't want to pressure you" TOMMY KINARD THE MAN THAT YOU ARE
Lou Ferrigno Jr you are the man for me
they held hands.... but BUCK'S THUMB STROKE????!!
