Due to (unfortunately) being chronically anemic, I immediately put together the reason that Gloom not only saps lifeforce but also "decays" general weaponry...

Ganondorf needs ALLLL that iron! One of the building blocks of life; it's necessary for him to become "rehydrated" alongside all the lifeforce that Gloom saps from people being sent directly to him, which is revealed when you reach Gloom's Origin.
