NaNoWriMo – My Cartoon of the Day – Day 23: Just Keep Writing
We are approaching our final week! Are you flying yet with your story well advanced? Or does it feel you are slowly crawling your way up a mountain? Regardless of where you are: we can keep writing and even crawling is progress. If you need to rest for a bit to lick your scrabbed knees: enjoy the view and remember the view from the summit will be even sweeter. An empty page cannot be edited and having gotten this far: we can make it to the final stretch. One more week to go till we can enjoy the satisfaction of having made it to the finish line.
Day 23: Just Keep Writing
Remember to take a breath and look around at this glorious experience. When the sweat drips from your brow, your legs hurt and your shoulders chafe from the backpack: there is pleasure to be had in facing the experience head-on and living life to the fullest. Likewise with our stories: there can be hardship in committing those words to paper, but the experience of having done so will stay with you. Stand up straight. Stretch your body. Drink a sip of water. And Just Keep Writing! We can do this.
NaNoWriMo - My Cartoon of the Day - Day 11: Self Care: Get a Good Night Sleep & Write Your Dreams
Sometimes, it's time to burn the midnight oil and sometimes, it's time to sleep! It's hell week, so let's be kind. Get to bed on time, rest your body & mind, and get inspired by your dreams!
Day 11: Self Care: Get a Good Night Sleep & Write Your Dreams
If you don't want to sleep or cannot: then send your main characters on a sleepover adventure! Hang out with friends, make nice food, and chat into the night and let them get to know each other better. Or use the age old trope: there's just one bed! and make them deal with those nice and uncomfortable situations - as you please!
NaNoWriMo - My Cartoon of the Day - Day 09: Take a Moment to Relax When You Need It
NaNo is more akin to a marathon than a sprint. To keep the stamina to last us through the entire month: it is important to take care of ourselves and relax when we need it. Get yourself that nice cup of tea, sit down in the fresh autumn air for a moment and take in the moment. Breathe! Take a moment and gather fresh energies.
Day 09: Take a Moment to Relax When You Need It
Keep writing your story. One word and one day at the time. These storms will pass and the way out is through!
NaNoWriMo - My Cartoon of the Day - Day 29: Join Your Fellow Wrimos at a Write-In
It's the penultimate day of NaNo 22 and it's time for that final push to get to your finish line! Find your fellow wrimos and let's encourage each other. A (virtual) write-in is a time and place where we all come together to write our stories. We can do this! If you have already completed your work: cheer your fellow wrimos on. If you haven't: let's buckle up and Get.This.Done. It's two days & one night left and every word you write in your story is one you did not have before.
Day 29: Join Your Fellow Wrimos at a Write-In
Who do your characters go to for support and encouragement? Who is cheering them on? Consider what you and what your characters need to conclude their story. Find companionship and comfort in the fact that people around the world are writing together with you in this challenge. Let's put pen to paper & write!
NaNoWriMo is an altogether serious and whimsical challenge: let’s write and write and write and let creativity fly! Don’t take yourself too seriously and get words on paper and have some hilarious fun in the process (even when the going gets hard: it’s still supposed to feel good to have done!).
(For the uninitiated: NaNoWriMo challenges you to write 50000 words in the month of November. I choose to embrace the NaNo Rebel spirit and focus on general creativity without the pressure.)
So, to encourage, help combat perfectionist stress, and embrace the silliness of it all: I hereby solemnly vow to post my daily NaNo cartoon-of-the-day in all its sketching-imperfect glory. I hope you brings a smile to your faces and can help you stay motivated when you find yourself struggling. We can DO this together!
In eons past, I always loved reading the daily NaNo toons and cartoons published. (Both the official ones and the ones in my region by HannahK). I am excited to embrace the challenge and follow in the footsteps of those giants that went before.
I would love to hear from you if you enjoy the daily drawing, they bring a smile to your face or encourage you somehow! So, do drop me a note and let’s face this NaNo challenge head-on!
NaNoWriMo - My Cartoon of the Day - Day 5
NaNoWriMo is a personal writing challenge and a massive community event at the same time! I enjoy the knowledge that there are so many others who are typing away with me and finding their own stories to tell.
Day 05: Checking in with Our WriMo Buddies!
Let’s shower ourselves and our buddies with encouragement and good vibes. We are approaching the end of our first week and everyone who is still here: you are marvelous! The courage of putting your story to paper is to be applauded and celebrated. Any word you’ve written is more than you had and I cheer you on!
As always: I am always happy to hear from anyone if you enjoy these cartoons. I hope to bring a smile to your faces and encourage you even when the goings get hard. Let’s keep being awesome together.
NaNoWriMo - My Cartoon of the Day - Day 19: Rescue Mission Alert
Uh'oh! Someone is in trouble! Time to break out all the stops & plan the rescue mission! Have you got your Loveable Dragon? Feisty Princess? Hidden tower far away? Adventure Map? Story Ninjas? Bumbling Knight? Superskilled and sly Character Assassin accompanied by the ever elusive & infamous Traveling Shovel of Death?
Day 19: Rescue Mission Alert
While your characters are off endangering themselves and saving each other: how are you holding up yourself? In need of rescue yet? Have you been feeding your plot bunnies? Or are they so vicious they are running away with you? What is the goal you set for yourself? Plan your own mission and consider: what do you need to keep your momentum going for the next few days? Remember: there is still a large chunk of the month left & we can do this!
NaNoWriMo - My Cartoon of the Day - Day 07: Maps
Have you drawn a story map yet? What does your narrative’s landscape look like? We are all on this writing expedition together with different maps to guide our way. I like creative and associative maps and it was fun to draw this filled with funky little writing places we can explore.
Day 07: Getting Lost in the Realm of Possibilities
What are the central features on your map? The sightseeing marvels no reader should miss? What monsters are lurking in those empty spaces only barely sketched in because no adventurer has ever returned to carry tales? Any hidden treasures that your main character has buried in the early days and now can’t find again?
NaNoWriMo - My Cartoon of the Day
The first words are on paper! It’s time to resist the urge to go back and make them prettier. Let’s keep writing instead!
Day 02: Inner Editor? Don’t Worry! They are Taken Care Of
For anyone who is worried about their Inner Editor wanting to join in: there’s a brilliant sanctum sanctorum for Inner Editors where they are welcome for the entire month! There are books on grammar, story writing, effective plotting, character development, vocabulary, drafts to experiment on and lots more! They can enjoy themselves tremendously while you can keep writing away! Have your Story Ninjas bring them safely there and your Inner Editors will be returned unharmed and well fed in December. Have a blast!
The Scholomance story Beside the Golden Door by Stellarete details Chloe growing up in the New York Enclave.
The Scholomance books Deadly Education, The Last Graduate & the pending: The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik detail El's story in the magical school the Scholomance.
Chloe is a fascinating character who has learnt growing up to be blind to the intensity of the privilege she grew up with and yet learns to open her eyes throughout the series and to become a genuine friend.
The enclave's teachings are so similar to all the messaging in more privileged societies. I am a university educated European and know rationally that I hold an immense amount of privilege even if there are still a lot of hardships and intense challenges in life. Chloe doesn't ignore her privilege, but does learn that her value and existence are not intrinsically tied to it. She works to be a better friend and person.
This story highlights Chloe's character growing up and the subtlety of the messaging and teaching. It's not even maliciously done: survival is paramount and these parent do lovingly want their children to live come what may.
The Scholomance by Naomi Novik is an intriguing and wonderful story and I am very curious for the conclusion that'll be published in September.
While we wait, this fanfic story is a lovely glimpse into this universe and character.
We’re off! NaNoWrMo has officially started! Have the plotbunnies found you yet?
Day 01: First Day – The Magic of Excitement
I always love the atmosphere of NaNo: everyone filled with energy and pursuing their creative experiments. Embrace the magic & congratulations for starting! Every word you write is one you did not have before. Yay us! Whether you have planned everything out or are flying by the seat of your pants – I wish us all a Very Happy NaNo indeed!
