The first is of the two of them standing together, with the master leaning towards the doctor with a hand on his chest. He is saying “you’ve fallen right into my trap, my dear doctor” and the doctor is responding with “is that so?” Behind them, smaller, is the Brigadier and Jo. Jo seems happy and is saying “oh that’s nice”, but the brig is standing next to her and is saying “WHAT?”

The second is a redraw of them in Mind of Evil, with some wires and machinery, working together.

The third is of three kissing the master, both knelt on the ground like Twelve and Missy in Death in Heaven. The brigadier is behind them, shocked.

aww this is one of my favourite episodes of 3′s era.. jo’s leaving had been teased time and time again, whenever someone fancied her and asked her to stay with them, she’d regrettably say “no” bc she still had so much to see with the doctor and couldn’t possibly leave her planet but here, she finally finds a reason to stick around and it’s so lovely to watch. i still miss her terribly though :(

ten minutes into jo grants last episode and im already tearing up!!! it’s so clear that she’s pulling away from the doctor to seek out her own passions and he’s so proud of her but also!!! he doesn’t want her to!!! he’s not ready to lose her!!!

this feels so much more like the modern companion send offs I’m used to, the way it’s eased into, the way you can see the companions character arc coming to its close, the way the doctor helps assuage the audiences sadness and resistance to change by expressing the same feelings himself :,)

on one hand there's something psychologically fascinating about the doctor, who prides themselves on their cleverness, being enraptured by the master's mind. even when the master is disguised as o or yana, the doctor is immediately drawn to them and is even deferential to them, sitting at their feet and wanting more than anything to learn from them. because as egotistical as the doctor can be, the one person to whom they are always willing to hear from is their avowed enemy.

on the other hand it's like. wow the doctor really might as well have big ol' letters saying TOP ME stenciled across their forehead huh.
