One of my favorite historical tidbits is that Arab traders, for centuries, fooled Europeans into thinking cinnamon came from a rare, vicious and fearsome cinnamon bird.
The belief was so prevalent, in fact, that the mythical cinnamon bird shows up in the writings of Herodotus and Aristotle, all the way into medieval European manuscripts where it’s illustrated in all its fierce, cinnamony glory:
Pliny the Elder expressed skepticism of the bird in his writings, rightly assuming that it was a tale invented to keep control on the trade and prices by reducing competition, but the belief was already so widespread that it persisted in many areas into the early 1300’s.

You probably think this world is a dream come true, but you're wrong.
I want to live near a lake so I can visit the ducks and geese everyday. </3
An ivory headrest with the god Shu holding the sky above his head. The two lions symbolize the mountains on the eastern and western horizons, between which the sun rose and set which, in this very case, is represented by the king himself. The headrest was designed to support the pharaoh’s head between the two horizons as he traveled through the afterlife.

Behold the rufous and black and rufous elephant shrew (Rhynchocyon petersi)! Despite its diminutive size, this critter is more closely related to elephants than it is to shrews. It’s also distantly related to manatees, dugongs, and hyraxes. It uses its long snout to scoop up worms, ants, termites, roots, berries, and shoots to eat. To move around its territory, this fast-moving mammal creates networks of foraging trails, which also serve as escape routes from predators.

ᵐᵘᵃᵏ 💋
