Mu Qing dying during the Xianle War and his ghost form being a distorted image of the Xianle Festival demon outfit.

It's a subconsiously intentional choice, because the irony of dressing up as a demon/ghost to soon become one isn't something that would pass on a man like Mu Qing.

Mu Qing following the Xianle duo around everywhere after that but neither Xie Lian nor Feng Xin remember the outfit so they have no idea who's the ghost that keeps following them.

Meanwhile the resentment in Mu Qing builds and builds and builds because he really did think that at least one of them would recognise him.

And when Feng Xin leaves Xie Lian behind Mu Qing leaves too.

He does keep an eye on the Xianle duo and both the way Feng Xin ends up asending and the way Xie Lian falls further and further from grace enhance all that anger and pain in him making him more powerfull every year that passes.

"How could a man who had everything throw it all away like this?"

"How can a man so foolish and brutish qualify for godhood?"

"Why is it not me up there in the Heavens when I tried so hard and sacrificed so much?"

He ends up a calamity. Still wearing the demon costume mask.

And when Xie Lian meets Hua Cheng and they find Qi Rong, when Feng Xin joins them too, Mu Qing is also there.

Hua Cheng takes one look at him and already worked up he doesn't hold back a "You're that asshole general who wouldn't let me fight for his highness during the war!"

And while Xie Lian has zero idea of what he's talking about Feng Xin was there. He was there when Mu Qing had to scruff that child, obsessed with enlisting and "fighting for his highness", multiple times.

"Qing'er?"
