This is a smear campaign pursued with all the obsession of a small child or a serial killer - yet it’s influential enough that Congress launched a full investigation into the claims. When one of the most powerful political bodies in the world can be swayed by a group with so little credibility, how can anyone take it seriously? Jaded politicos might interject at this point to say that no one does.   But of course, this was never really about ‘dead babies’. It’s about vilifying an organisation that provides affordable healthcare to women – contraception, cervical cancer screenings, breast exams and, yes, abortions.   Abortions, which take up just 3% of Planned Parenthood spending, none of which is federal. But presidential hopeful Rand Paul vowed to use ”all legislative vehicles at his disposal“ to force a vote, while Ted Cruz pledged to “eliminate” its state funding.   This is just one in a long line of assaults on women’s reproductive rights – from the Texas bill so famously filibustered by Wendy Davis to the attempt to limit abortions to six weeks in North Dakota. Meanwhile, thanks to the Hobby Lobby ruling, private firms can opt not to offer contraception in workers’ health plans under Obamacare on religious grounds.   This explains why so many senators seem able to overlook the screaming irony that family planning services prevent abortions, and that more restrictive abortion policy laws aren’t associated with lower abortion rates.   But when has evidence mattered? Not in the past, and as the latest vote shows, not now.   It was only ever about ideology. It’s about restricting women’s right to choose what to do with their bodies, and it’s about winning presidential primaries. And with the election circus in sight, there’s more of this to come.

‘Planned Parenthood sells dead babies’ is just the latest anti-abortion conspiracy. Allegations made against the family planning services provider may seem shocking, but they’re just another attempt to erode women’s rights in time for the presidential election. (via wilwheaton)

Long Missing Spook Returns to Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion after 46 Years | Nerdist

If you're a Disneyland aficionado, the animatronic character known as the Hatbox Ghost from the Haunted Mansion attraction has long been the stuff of urban legend. A creepy spirit whose head vanishes from his neck and then suddenly appears in a hatbox that he's holding, the character has shown up on tons of officially licensed merchandise for the Mansion since the attraction opened up way back in August of 1969, despite the character not actually being in the ride itself. For years, park guests from back in the day swore they saw old 'hatty in the ride, even though Disney's official word on the Hatbox Ghost has always been that he never actually appeared in the Mansion, due to the effects not working properly. However, it was recently discovered that the character was indeed one of the 999 Happy Haunts, thanks to some digging done from a hardcore Haunted Mansion fan, but only for a few days. But now as part of Disneyland's 60th Anniversary celebration this year, the Disney Imagineers

Do I have this right? During the election, the fascist republicans were an existential threat to everything we hold dear in America, and the only way to stop them was to send $3 or $5 or whatever to the bullshit fund, so we could elect Democrats who will stop it.

Okay, we tried that and we lost. So now we are really relying on those same Democrats and that same Democratic party to do everything within their power to protect us from the terrifying threat they all warned us about.

Some Democrats have been amazing -- Jasmine Crockett, AOC, Chris Murphy all come to mind -- while the leaders in both houses continue to do nothing more than spout empty platitudes in public, and rubber stamp the most incompetent, unqualified, dangerous, nominees in the history of the country.

There's not a lot the House can do now -- that's coming up soon -- but the Senate has had a number of opportunities to slow things down and make it hard for the fascists to enact their Project 2025 agenda.

And the Senate leader, with the exception of one performative and ultimately pointless filibuster, has done fuck all with the powers the minority has in the chamber.

I am furious that Schumer allowed his caucus to grant unanimous consent for anything, but he's done it, again, and this time we have Tulsi Gabbard -- Tulsi fucking Gabbard! -- as the Director of National Intelligence as a result.

Chuck Schumer is an absolute failure of a leader in the Senate. We are crying out for leadership and support as we fight to protect America from these fascists, and instead he insults and demoralizes us with droning lectures like we've all been called to the principal's office, and an absolute refusal to fight for anything.

I got thousands of text messages and emails from Democrats all over the country, correctly warning us that if Trump were not defeated, we were looking at a nightmare of fascism, crony capitalism, corruption, and targeted cruelty.

Well, we’re here … where is the fucking fight, Senator? Did all the existential threats just vanish the day after the election?

Schumer has made it painfully clear that he values some version of Senate collegiality that no longer exists, and that he has zero fight in him.

This moment demands action and a willingness to use every single lever of government to slow this down, and this old, wealthy, out of touch, effete, relic of a time that no longer exists is catastrophically letting us all down.
