Izaya is a doctor from the capital who came to a rural town to investigate a case of exceptional longevity and to find the secret to immortality, but got stuck there during a plague outbreak. Shizuo is a local bone setter who, because he got accused of murder and violently defended himself in a fight, is seen as a ripper. He has trouble coming to term with the role of healer that’s been attributed to him. They end up having to work together to face the plague, even though their methods and views differ widely.

“Who did you go with when you…” She paused, the word catching at the back of her throat. “Died. When you died.”

If Kano was surprised at her sudden line of questioning, his expression didn’t reveal it. He seemed to consider his options before responding.
