Guys heyyy
"THAT'S MY CIGAR."
time loop fic where davey is trapped in a time loop and the only way to break it is to confess his feelings to jack directly and unambiguously but the fic is from jack's perspective so it's a perfectly normal day except davey is acting really weird and then gives the most confusing love confession ever because he doesn't know it'll break the loop so he's under the impression that this will all reset anyway
Thank you to @kevinandwhizzer for letting me use their notes! Please check out their blog it has amazing art and lots of Albert love
These are just the little things Albert does that lead me to head canon him as being on the spectrum
Albert doesn’t really understand social cues
Taking Race’s cigar out of his mouth
He looks kind of confused when the other Newsies react negatively to “If you can find her”
“I’m just reporting the news.”
He seems to struggle with emotions
His facial expressions are a little slower than the other Newsies, like he’s either observing and acting to fit in or he’s processing the emotion a little later than everyone else
Touch
Lots of unnecessary touching throughout the show (Mainly hits on the shoulder/chest or shaking someone’s shoulder)
He’s also pretty tactile with Romeo in the beginning of The World Will Know
and he holds hands with Crutchie after Morris shoves him
How uncomfortable he looks when Race suddenly grabs him in King of New York
He seems confused and tired a lot (No I’m not saying all Autistic people are always confused/tired)
There’s always a lot going on, especially during the strike where everything is changing. Which could be really confusing and distressing
Plus the Newsies are really loud, which probably gets overstimulating (idk about you but I get so tired after being overstimulated)
Still doesn’t understand what Race means by “The worlds yer erster” even when it’s cleared up that he meant to say “oyster”
Hyperactive or “fidgety”
Really fidgety and looks kind of uncomfortable while waiting in line. He’s looking around a lot, trying to occupy his hands by adjusting his clothes, and just shifting his weight and moving his body
Constantly adjusting his stance in the scene before The World Will Know (Putting his leg up and down, adjusting his bag, holding on to/letting go of the newscart railing)
All of the different positions he sits in when we first see Jacobi’s, he plays with his hands for a bit
The mouth thing he does before King of New York, along with playing with the stick and his clothes
Thanks the waiter at Jacobi’s for giving him water even though he picked fun at him
Lots of Autistic folk have trouble understanding when they’re being made fun of. Albert just knows he’s supposed to say thank you when he’s given something
kevinandwhizzer mentions in their post how they feel like Albert is the type to notice mundane things and that deserves an honorable mention

Davey trying to sell newspapers
Ok, of course, yes please also tell us about your favorite Crutchie and why!
LETS FUCKING GOOOO OKAY
i have no problem with AKB as a person!! just getting that out of the way because i WILL shit on his portrayal of Crutchie swiftly and without remorse.
AKB is very good at playing the happy-go-lucky, innocent, wide eyed comedic relief character. he plays the same type of character in tuck everlasting as Jesse, and in the Dracula reimagining he's in now. he's a good actor and he plays that typecast well!
the problem is, that isn't Crutchie. i feel like AKB drastically sanitized the character that was written in the script. he made Crutchie into this pure and wholesome caricature of a disabled person, who gets pushed around and defended and is always upbeat about it. The general atmosphere of fan spaces in 2017 didn't help that at all either. I remember a lot of infantilizing Crutchie, all sorts of "smol boi ray of sunshine" shit. he was treated like this defenseless, needy little thing. he wasn't a person.
I really feel like Matthew Duckett (an actual disabled actor! almost like it matters!) read the same script as AKB, and got a person out of it instead of a pity sponge. Matthew's Crutchie is, to put it plainly, a little shit. He antagonizes the Delanceys, fights cops, slingshots his friends when he gets bored. He's playful and funny, but he's also whip-smart, fast on his feet, and will talk shit like it's nobody's business. his doubt about the strike isn't him being scared and worried about fighting, it's him being a realist and a strategist, recognizing flaws in their plan that jack isn't even thinking about. He isn't this defenseless little blob that the other newsies have to constantly worry about, but a competent and capable part of the community. one of jack's right hands and confidants, an intelligent and necessary part of the strike. it makes it so much more devastating when he's taken to the refuge. jack falls apart because he's lost his friend, brother, and equal, not because he let poor little Crutchie get captured by the cops.
and when Matthew's Crutchie gets back from the refuge, he is happy to be back and see his friends, but he is also angry. he's angry and hurt and has a lot of other emotions going on, which you can see when he cuffs Snyder. he doesn't just bounce right back, he is affected tremendously. like a REAL GODDAMN PERSON.
i love how Matthew Duckett gave Crutchie room to be a capable, emotional character instead of a clean-cut sunny blob. you can really see that he isn't just Crutchie, he's Sean (or Charlie or whatever name you prefer), the real person.
AKB made Crutchie a caricature, Matthew Duckett brought him to life.
I just realized something. In the show I’m doing currently, or rather, just finished as of today (😭), I have a fair amount of lines, but not many, so I’ve been doing some little improv-y bits here and there to add on to my character/the show. And it hit me: Max Casella did the same thing with Racetrack Higgins.
I’m gonna paraphrase this, but once I read a quote from Max Casella talking about his role as Racetrack saying: “Racetrack doesn’t have many lines in the script, so I’v been adding little bits of my own.”
I am slowly but surely on my way to becoming the Max Casella/Racetrack Higgins I want to see in the world.
