if toge inumaki was offered a chance trade his life to start over in a world without curses, he would. the money was great, sure, but the nights he spent frustrated and writing out his thoughts because of his inability to say them out loud was almost too much to bear.

dreams of the accidents where he let words slip around innocent people at a tender elementary age plagued him. the shame of his friends doing something so simple as ordering food for him at the ramen place down the street from his dorms. all of the misfortunes, both big and small, of his own cursed life were nearly too much to bear sometimes.

the worst of it was not being able to speak to you.

you insisted you didn't mind, that love goes beyond words, that reading his text messages and little notes was more than enough. but he saw how happy you looked joking with panda, talking shit with maki, and singing along to hilary duff with the first-years. love goes beyond words, of course, but they sure do play a part in showing it.

right now, he can't sleep. he's lying awake, staring at his dorm ceiling, a random 80's playlist he looked up on spotify playing softly from his phone that lays on his stomach. he's thinking about how you could be with someone better, someone who could give you everything you needed. you always insist that he's everything you want, but he's not so certain about meeting your needs.

as he hears a plane passing high over the dorm building, his phone buzzes over the thick cotton of his hoodie. robotically, he picks it up, and the light illuminates his face and makes him squint.

without thinking, he types a quick 'yes' and gets up to unlock the door. you'll be there in a second, only staying three doors down from him. so he stays with his nose barely brushing the wood until he hears your footsteps pattering up to his room.

you can't even knock before he opens it, and immediately he can tell you're here for something else besides company. you look unsure, your brow furrowed and your bottom lip tugged between your teeth.

toge opens the door wider, allowing you to come in and claim your spot on the foot of his bed. the dim light from the lanterns outside frame your shoulders. they're tense.

"what's up?" he wants to say. but he can't. not even something as simple as that. so he tilts his head to the side, looking at you expectantly. you pat the spot next to you, and he sits down.

"toge," you start, "you've been off all week. what's going on?" and before he can shrug, you cut him off. "and don't say 'nothing.' you can't hide from me and you know it." you nudge his shoulder with yours, in an attempt to keep things lighthearted.

toge sighs, then pulls out his phone. he hates having to type things out, but he feels that can't properly say what he means through sign language due to your limited knowledge of it (you're working on it, though. maki's been helping you.) he opens his notes app and gets to typing. you hook your chin over his shoulder to watch, and he doesn't bother to shove you away. he likes you watching him fumble over his words. it gives him a sense of normalcy.

'just feeling bad.'

"about what?"

'myse-' he backspaces. 'my cursed technique.'

you hum, and he takes it as an invitation to continue.

'i wish i could talk to you.'

"you are."

'you know what i mean. normal.'

you pinch his thigh. "what about anything in our lives is normal? megumi can summon animals from his shadow, for gods' sakes."

he wants to laugh, but he can't bring himself to it. 'he can talk though. everyone can. even panda'

he feels your chin lift up, and you grab his hand and pull him down on the mattress to curl up and face you. your arm snakes over his waist; your fingers twist the hem of his sweatshirt back and forth.

"look," you whisper, "you may think of your ability as hindering because you can't say all of the good things you think. you may only think of how your voice only hurts others. i can't even begin to imagine how that feels."

"but...words can be hurtful without a cursed technique. you've never viciously said anything you wish you could take back. in a way, i envy you."

when you hear inumaki sniffle, you stop talking and peer into his eyes. if it wasn't nearly pitch black in his room, he would watch as you inspect the flecks of lilac and periwinkle in his irises. instead, he shakes his head and taps your wrist, urging you to keep talking.

"toge, you are the sweetest person i've ever met, spoken words or not. you're incredibly thoughtful, you stay levelheaded whenever things go south, and you're incredibly handsome. that's a bonus."

he's actually able to laugh this time.

"i love you the way you are. that's never going to change. ever."

heart full and pounding, he reaches for his phone. you hold his arm at his side and stop him in his tracks.

"it's okay. i already know."

These are SUCH cool ideas Anna!!! So lovely! I'm gonna expand on them:

Armin uses all his savings on books that phisically don’t fit on his shelves anymore. Maybe at some point he gives up on trying to put them on shelves and just piles them up around the house. Annie keeps tripping over them and he keeps promising to put them away, but he ultimately never does, he just brings home more and more books, one or two every day, and, as you said, she playfully rolls her eyes and shakes her head at his shenanigans. Until one day, they’re runming late to one of Historia's dinners and Annie’s rushing through the house because where are her damn earrings and– she trips over a pile of books and falls flat on her face. Needless to say, they don’t make it in time for the dinner. The next day, Armin packs all his books into boxes and puts them away in the basement, and stops bringing any new ones home. He can’t bring himself to look at her for the next week because he feels guilty for what happened, which I think would drive Annie insane. So at the end of that week, as soon as he walks through the door, Annie grabs both of his hands and drags him to the basement– which looks nothing like the basement he had put his books in. No, it’s barely a basement anymore– it’s a library. With shelves going all the way to the ceiling and a rolling stairwell thingy so he can reach the top shelves, a comfy couch on the side and a working desk in the centre of the room. Armin freezes for a moment, tears pooling in his eyes as he take sit all in– she built him a library. A library of his own. It’s the most loved he's ever felt, and it's overwhelming in the best of ways.

After he doesn’t say anything for an excruciating amount of time, Annie squeezes his hand to bring him back to her. "I haven’t put all the books in yet, I figured–" but he cuts her off and kisses her, once, twice, and three times, reducing her to a blushy laughing mess. And then they put all the books on and try out the couch

BUT I AM DIGRESSING!!!

I think Armin scolding Annie for her sugar intake would only result in her learning how to bake. Except she doesn’t bake at normal times, no. She bakes when she's stressed. She bakes in the middle of the night. She bakes before important meetings. And of course, Armin usually joins her in the kitchen, because he's also stressed and nervous about that meeting and he sometimes can’t sleep alone at night. He teases her endlessly at first, ending up with a cinnamon roll stuffed in his mouth to shut him up.

When they first moved in together, they argued over the color of the walls– Annie wanted a classic white in all rooms, while Armin wanted each room to be a different color (they eventually ended up compromising and having one colored wall in each room).

Maybe Armin likes sleeping with the window open, because it helps him breathe better, but Annie gets cold easily, so they end up having some silly arguments about that too. Armin eventually gets Annie two more blankets and she stops complaining about the cold.

But, I think that, more often than not, Annie fights Armin because he keeps overworking himself. Most days, she has to physically drag him to bed. Other days, he’s so exhausted that he ends up breaking down mid-argument, so Annie stops fighting and just holds him.

You had gotten directions for your next class from a teacher, but you’d gotten turned around a lost at some point

Class had already started, and there was nobody in the halls to ask other than some boy standing by the windows on his phone

Ignoring the fact that he was a bit intimidating and also supposed to be in class, you walked up to the pink haired boy to ask directions

His turquoise eyes did not look amused, but nevertheless, he pointed towards the door at the end of the hall
