Fateful Encounter, Faithless Night

Monsters of Mount Rageous: Chapter 1

Fateful Encounter, Faithless Night

Run.

Run and don’t stop for anything.

Those were the words that played over and over in Savina’s head as she fled through the cobblestone streets of Mount Rageous.

Run.

How did this happen?

Don’t stop.

How could this happen?

Don’t look back.

Why me?

Her footsteps fell, fast and frantic, echoing along the deserted pathways. It was too late for anyone else to be out. She never should have been out.

Savina’s heart pounded in her ears, tears threatening to spill from eyes if she allowed her mind to linger on what had just happened for too long. Her hand flew up to cover her neck. Were those marks she felt? No… surely not. She was just scared and paranoid and imagining things.

The monster really did come out of nowhere. One moment she was calmly returning home from a peaceful moonlit stroll, as insomnia often drove her to take, and the next a vampire had her pinned against the brick wall of an abandoned shop, gleaming fangs claws digging into her neck. She had screamed, but as suddenly as he had appeared, he had vanished, disappearing back into the night and leaving her a catatonic mess on the filthy ground.

And so ran. As fast as she could. As soon as she could. She had to get away.

Her heel came down hard on a shallow puddle, and she flinched as the resounding splash reached her ears. She was running out of breath, her legs and lungs burned with every step, she couldn’t go on forever.

Another ten, fifteen, twenty, the adrenaline made it hard for her to be sure, minutes flew by as Savina gasped for air, feeling her body on the verge of collapse. She stumbled, gracelessly, into the closest alley she could find, slamming into the rough wall, the sharp bricks ripping into her land and leaving another part of her body bloody and bruised.

She stepped forward once, twice, three times before bracing herself on the wall behind her and collapsing to the stony ground below.

There she sat, shaking, taking in desperate gulps of air her lungs ached for. Savina tried to catch her breath, curling her knees to her chest, keeping her hand planted firmly over the wound on her neck. She could feel the blood starting to seep through the gaps of her fingers.

She had to know for certain.

With her heart lodged in her throat, she removed her trembling hand from her neck, the night air freezing and uncomfortable on the now exposed skin. Holding her hand out before her, sickly blue blood staining her porcelain skin, she looked down…

She couldn’t stop the choked sob that was torn from her throat.

Two small, distinct stains, sitting innocently on her shaking hand. The tell tale markings of a bite.

Savina’s sobs pierced through the once quiet night, tears and blood dripping to coat the stones she curled into herself upon.

What do I now?

She thought feverishly, mind racing with unanswered questions and heart heavy with crushing despair. She felt like she was going to be sick.

Where do I go? How am I supposed to hide this? How am I supposed to have any semblance of a normal life? Can I still go back home…? Do I even have a home to go back to anymore…?

Despite the torrent of thoughts that flooded her head, there was one that played on loop, circling the current over, and over, and over.

Am I… a monster now?

Hours seemed to pass, yet it felt like no time at all, as Savina sobbed into her knees, tears staining her skirt. That skirt… it was a gift from her mother, from her last birthday. She wondered if she would ever see her again. She wondered if she would ever have another birthday, or if that vile bite cursed her to be 19 forever.

The night bore on, the merciless moon shining its hateful rays down on the city, its watery light barely illuminating the girl in the alley, the girl whose violent cries downed out the sound of footsteps that drew ever nearer.

At long last, Savina’s eyes ran dry, her body no longer having enough water to continue to cry. She sniffled, wiping her eyes with the back of her clean hand, clearing them of the lingering tears that blurred her vision.

It was at that moment that she saw the strangers boots, stopped directly in front of her.

A terrified scream was ripped from her mouth as she tried to scramble back, only to hit her head against the unforgiving brick. Her vision swam with stars, and she stared up, expecting the worst.

However, when her world came back into focus, she didn’t find herself staring face to face with a cruel, blue haired man, but instead into the calm eyes of a girl. Looking not much older than herself.

”W-who are you…”

She whispered, her voice weak and raw from her sobs, edged with fear.

”what do you want from me?”

She tried her best to sound brave, assertive, but her words came out like those of a terrified child. She curled further into herself. She wanted to run again.

But the girl before her didn’t growl and snarl, didn’t push her down and bare glistening fangs. No, she did nothing of the sort. Instead, she smiled down at Savina, something… almost kind, shining in the depths of her crimson eyes.

Slowly, gently, the stranger held her arm out to her, her palm upright, as if she was… offering her help.

Savina stared at her relaxed expression, then down at her outstretched hand, and once again back up into her eyes, her own eyes wide and confused.

It was then that the strange woman spoke, her voice smooth and clear, echoing back to her in the silent alley, an accent that Savina didn’t recognize lacing her every word.

“Come on kid.”

Savina’s breath hitched, her hand moving to grasp the strangers, slowly, hesitantly.

“Everything is going to be okay.”

DEVOURS (this chapter will always have a special lil’ place in my heart)

Chapter 4

Not Quite Abandoned

...

The night was dark, a rain pouring with a vengeance across all of Mount Rageous. Those with sense stayed indoors, safe and sheltered from the raging storm.

But other things weren't left with much of a choice.

Other things had been traveling. Traveling for a long time. They were desperate for a place to rest.

The line cabin seemed to come from no where, the surrounding area so empty and forgotten that the exhausted entity found it odd that it should even exist.

Maybe other homes used to dot the barren landscape, neighbors and friends. A community.

But it must have been a long time ago.

A tall, dark wooden door creaked open just slightly, the wind and rain welcoming itself into the abandoned home. A dark, smoke-like shadow slipped through the open doorway, making its way into a small room.

The strange mass wound around the space, its movement quick and almost suspicious. As if it were examining the area for danger.

Soon enough, the entity must have figured the crumbling structure to be suitable enough, as the dark figure began to swirl and twist, mangling itself into the shape of a Rageon. Soon, it took the form of a tall, dull-coloured demonic being.

The demon peered around, his tail dangling behind him and his cape slightly moving with the small air current that seeped from the shattered window.

He began to walk, his metal boots clinking against the old wooden floor as he explored the new-found cabin.

His feet carried him to a small kitchen, stopping in front of the table, one of the only still intact pieces of furniture the room had to offer. he inspected the dull, plaid cloth draped over it, and reached out to touch the fabric only to scowl in disgust when his fingers came away coated in dust. How unsanitary.

With an annoyed flick of his tail, the Demon turned to leave, his footsteps echoing throughout the hollow home as he made his way out of the kitchen and into the rooms beyond.

He wasn't aware of the sharp gaze that followed him from under the plaid.

The red demon continued his endeavor, his eyes catching on a large portrait that hung crooked in the tattered living room.

He inspected the time-worn canvas, as he did the table. It was a plain, gray canvas, although the image depicted on it was unrecognizable, courtesy of the jagged scratches that ran across its entirety. Again, it was covered in disgusting amounts of dust, so he began to turn around to leave, having nowhere near enough interest to try and clear the rotting paper.

It was then that he found himself face to face with a girl.

He jumped at the sight, having believed he was the only one in the cabin

“Hello there!” The figure boasted.

The strange girl stared at him with wide, sparkling eyes, their pink hue strange and ghostly. She hovered at his eye level, levitating a few feet from the ground below.

“What the-” The demon loudly said, his strange accent becoming quite prominent with his shock.

“Who are you,” she raised a hand to her face, cartoonishly poking at her mouth, “It’s SO rare to see new faces around here; especially ones so cute!”

The figure quickly and swiftly grabbed the demon’s face, pulling herself closer to him, inspecting his face, picking out all of his details and taking them in for information.

The demon’s cheeks heated at the gesture, turning slightly red. He was glad the cabin was so dark.

The demon moved his hands to grab her wrists, shoving her away from him with force. His expression was quite the opposite of gleeful.

“Unhand me! Who do you think you ar-”

He hissed, tail lashing behind him. But he was never able to finish his question before the phantom-esque girl cut him off in excitement.

“OOH! You’re a demon, aren’t you?!” The figure’s eyes lit up, practically sparkling, “I’ve never seen a real one before! Can I touch your horns?”

She spoke fast, but not too fast for the demon to handle. He felt his frown deepen, a growl forming in the back of his throat.

“Ja, I am, so I suggest you learn your place, spectre.”

He was getting angrier by the second, his eyebrows lowering and his mouth downturned.

“And nein, you cannot.”

The spectre stared at the demon, her eyes twinkling with amazement. The demon held back an annoyed sigh, knowing she was going to defy his boundaries out of pure excitement.

“Sooo… what’s your name?” She finally asked, her voice bouncy and curious.

“My name is none of your concern, now will you PLEASE-”

“Ah, come on!” She interrupted yet again, “I would DIE to share my name with somebody! But I don’t remember it.”

She paused for a moment, eyes far away as she seemed to contemplate something before giving up with a shrug.

“Isn’t that strange?”

In the blink of an eye, the spectre took the demon’s hands in hers, holding them as she floated around him cheerfully, continuing her overjoyed rambling.

“Ooh! I bet someone as beautiful as you has an equally as beautiful name! Maybe it’s-”

“Stars ABOVE, will you be quiet?” He screamed, cutting her sentence off at once, “Do you always act like you’re on a sugar rush?”

The phantom tilted her head, her pupils slightly dilating at the last two words. Her mouth slightly gaped open, as though she were lost in thought for a few short seconds.

Then, she lit up like the oil lamps that lined the city streets.

“Sugar Rush! That’s a cute name, isn’t it? That can be my new name!” She boasted, her eyes sparkling again as they did only a few seconds ago.

The ghost, Sugar, quickly moved her arms around the demon’s torso, forcing him into an energetic embrace. The demon’s cheeks reddened once more, but he tried to wave it off. He refused to fall for someone he just met only a few minutes ago, let alone some manic, overly touchy poltergeist.

Her skirt moved with her spiritual fog. It wavered around her like a cloud, although not quite as visible.

“Ah! Thank you beautiful stranger!!” Sugar chimed, her voice ringing with gratitude and admiration.

“Whatever,” the demon mumbled, pointedly looking anywhere besides the smaller girl attached to his waist.

There were a few moments of heavy, awkward silence.

Well, at least awkward to the demon. Sugar didn't appear to mind at all, seemingly more than content to stay wrapped around the entity that wandered into her home.

Eventually, the demon sighed, finally giving into the wild girls antics. He was far too exhausted to fight it.

“Remind.” He whispered, barely audible over the pelting rain and rolling thunder just outside the walls of the cabin.

“Hm?” Sugar hummed in question, looking up at him with wide eyes, head tilted ever so slightly in confusion. The view wasn't much different than looking at a lost puppy.

“My name,” he sighed, his exhaustion seeping into his voice now that he was no longer fueled from shock and anger, “It’s Remind.”

Sugar's eyes lit up, a wide smile stretching across her face. After a moment, she let out a short squeal, immediately tackling him again in another imprompt hug.

The demon flustered again, tail shooting straight up behind him like a startled cat before he relaxed again with a sigh.

He glanced down at the spirit that held him tight, looking like she didn't have a care in the word. Her dark, color-streaked hair was messy and out of place from where it pressed against his chest.

The sight made his heart stutter for a second.

He sighed, for seemingly the millionth time that night, before allowing himself the smallest of smiles.

He supposed there were far worse fates in the world.

He was a demon, surely he could handle sharing a dusty cabin with a girl who bounced off the walls, at least until he had regained his strength.

Yes. Of course he could handle that.

After all, what's the most that could happen?
