you look at my writing
& ask why i write about drinking tea
& sitting, looking out the window,
people-watching.

you say it would bore the reader.

but sometimes there is magic
in writing the mundane.
the everyday,
the things
that are easy to ignore.

sometimes it’s enough to write about your eyes
when you’re looking at me
& i pretend not to notice
& you know i'm pretending
not to notice.

i dated a linguistics professor once
& i let him read a few of my poems
& it felt like handing him my heart

& he smiled a beautiful smile
& told me to stop using the word "very" too often

otherwise the poems are beautiful, he said
but what if i feel very very very very very
very very very very very very very very very
very very very very very very very very very
very very very very very very very very very
very very very very very very very very very
very very very very very very very very very
very very very very very very very very very
very very very very very very very very very
very very very very very very very very very
sad?

what word do i use then, professor?

he suggested words like melancholy
& somber
& despondent
& i have since forgotten the rest

but professor,
these words are pretty
these words are too beautiful
for what i am feeling right now

my sadness is too heavy for my heart
& it plays on a loop

is there a word that encapsulates that?

[on the phone, at a rainy train station:]

I don’t want this heart—take it away, please.
Can I have another mind instead? No, not a brain. A mind, yes.
A mind. I just want more space for the memories.
Precisely.
There are people I don’t want to forget. Yes, even after they’ve forgotten me.
But there are places too—places I want to revisit without having to leave my bed.
Yes, even when I’m no longer welcome. But there are feelings too.
Like I want to remember what it felt like hearing my favourite song for the first time. Like I want to remember what it felt like diving in the ocean
long before I learned how to swim.
Like I want to remember the way you make me feel, always.
But without the side effects.
No, not the side effects! Like, nausea and fever;
coughing up blood and throwing up; like, this lonesome road
that’s replaced my spine over night, and this heart that now only knows to ache.
That’s all, thank you.
