my relationship with lewis was… complicated. we were both anomalies in the paddock, though for very different obvious reasons. we both knew what it felt like to walk into a room and feel like you didn’t belong, to have to fight twice as hard to prove yourself, to carry the weight of representation whether you wanted to or not. but instead of bringing us closer, those shared experiences sometimes pushed us apart.

lewis was always kind to me, and i don’t want to diminish that. he understood things that no one else on the grid could, and in our quieter moments, we’d talk about what it felt like to be ‘othered’ in a sport that thrives on tradition. but those moments were rare, and when we were on track—or in the paddock—it felt like we were always circling each other, wary but never fully connecting. maybe it was because we both had walls up, or maybe it was because we each carried our own burdens and didn’t know how to share them without feeling weaker for it.
