Kamikaze Girls: An alternative and queer retrospective

Light spoilers for Kamikaze Girls

Ah, Kamikaze Girls. I’ve shouted a lot in reaction to various Discotek rescues, from Gunbuster to Berserk among others, but nothing had me screaming and shouting around the room like the Kamikaze Girls announcement. I never imagined that Discotek would ever license one of my favorite movies, let alone the movie that completely changed the course of my life, and continues to help me reflect with every watch. The film was formative to me in my high school years, and rewatching it recently with the Discotek release made me realize the impact it had on my gender, my sexuality, my friendships with others, my self-expression, and self-acceptance.

For those unfamiliar, let me get you situated. Kamikaze Girls is a coming-of-age comedy film about two teenage girls in the rural town of Shimotsuma in Ibaraki Prefecture. Momoko, a lolita with a very dysfunctional family with a heart only reserved for fashion brand Baby The Stars Shine Bright, meets Ichiko, an intimidating bosozoku girl with a bike so modified you can’t tell it’s a moped. Ichiko admires Momoko’s defiant independence, even as Momoko is ungrounded and detached; and Momoko learns to admire Ichiko’s dedication to her individuality, even if it drives her up a wall. As they learn more about each other, Momoko and Ichiko grow and change one another as they journey through unrequited love, teenage rebellion, life-changing opportunities, working through their faults, and embracing themselves even more than before. Enhanced by iconic J-Pop and J-Rock music of the era from artists like Tommy Heavenly6, an original soundtrack by Yoko Kanno, super-saturated visuals, and utterly unpredictable yet great acting, you can see why it was impactful for many viewers and myself.

I'm very curious about what Norton's 6th B-day letter is going to be.

So far, the 6th letter has always been an investigation field note written by Alice (as confirmed in Fiona's latest letter). They are arguably one of the richest pieces of character lore we have so far. Probably my fav installment in IDV lore. We're not entirely sure at what point in time these notes were written. Was it prior to Alice entering the game? During? After?

Furthermore, it seems like the incentive of writing these notes was the subject going missing (in most of the cases), and, eventually, the ties to the manor. But here's the thing, Norton wasn't a missing person case by the time Alice entered the manor. So will his 6th letter still be an investigation field note? If so, what would be the incentive to investigate Norton? The Golden Cave incident? Most likely, but we're not sure how much Alice got to look into the case before she switched focus to the manor. She didn't get to interview Norton before that, but how much does she already know about him?

I guess the same thing goes with the other characters in AoM. What will their 6th letters be??

Another neat little detail is the lack of experiment files on this group because they were the last participants before the game collapsed. There were literally no one there to write them, thus they don't have them.

Thinking about Gilbert (Giselbert) and his time as the representation of the Teutonic Knights.

Thinking about how representations like him, of military orders instead of duchies and kingdoms, were seen or treated as a servant of their orders, a servant of God.

Thinking about how Gilbert was expected to be their greatest warrior, their greatest follower, because he was "sent by God" to fulfill the Order's mission.

Thinking about how Gilbert's early introduction to love was through conflict; how he was rewarded when he excelled in battle, punished when he limped home crying.

Thinking about the budding animosity when he sees representation of kingdoms, towns, republics, etc. loved unconditionally by their people while Gilbert literally has to fight tooth and nail about it.

Thinking about the betrayal he feels when his efforts were eventually rewarded with banishment, and orders like him were later on apprehended and burned at stakes.

Thinking about his own mortality and existence, questioning why he couldn't die and if that meant he actually couldn't go to heaven.

Knighthood sure is rough.

Arlechìn 🎭 Arlecchino

Fra le maschere italiane è forse la più conosciuta e popolare. Si tratta anche di una delle maschere più antiche, le sue origini si possono infatti rintracciare nella figura del “diavolo burlone” delle favole medioevali e in seguito nel “buffone” delle compagnie di comici girovaghi alle corti principesche o fra i saltimbanchi e gli acrobati nelle fiere e nei mercati dei sobborghi, sempre affollati di gente in cerca di divertimento. Nativo di Bergamo bassa, parla inizialmente solo nel suo dialetto locale. Il suo vestito era in origine bianco, ma con il tempo a furia di rattoppi con pezzi di stoffa di ogni genere, è diventato quello che oggi tutti conosciamo; un variopinto abito composto da un corto giubbetto e da un paio di pantaloni attillati, entrambi a losanghe e triangoli di tutti i colori. Arlecchino ha un carattere stravagante e scapestrato. Ne combina di tutte, inventa imbrogli e burle a spese dei padroni avidi e taccagni dei quali é a servizio, ma non gliene va bene una. Intendiamoci Arlecchino non é uno stupido; magari è un ingenuo, talvolta forse un po' sciocco, ma ricco di fantasia e immaginazione. In quanto a lavorare nemmeno a parlarne. Però fa lavorare la lingua e molto. I suoi lazzi, le sue battute, le sue ingenue spiritosaggini, fanno ridere a crepapelle tutti quanti. Quando poi non sa come cavarsi da un impaccio o a liberarsi da un guaio, Arlecchino diventa un abile maestro nel far funzionare le gambe; capriole, piroette e salti acrobatici.

Brighèla 🎭 Brighella

Brighella deve il suo nome al suo carattere attaccabrighe, insolente e dispettoso. E’ il compare di Arlecchino. Entrambi sono nati a Bergamo. Brighella non fa solo il servo come Arlecchino, ma un'infinità di altri mestieri, più o meno leciti ed onesti. Così si ritrova sempre in mezzo a svariati intrighi. Elementi caratteristici del personaggio sono la prontezza e l'agilità della sua mente, per escogitare inganni e preparare trappole in cui far cadere il prossimo, tutto questo solo per il gusto stesso di imbrogliare gli altri. E' intrigante, molto furbo e senza scrupoli. Brighella inoltre è un tipo bugiardo, racconta frottole con sicurezza e convinzione che è quasi impossibile distinguerle dalla verità. Inoltre è molto abile nel cantare, suonare e ballare. La giacca e i pantaloni sono decorati di galloni verdi; ha le scarpe nere con i pon pon verdi. Il mantello è bianco con due strisce verdi, la maschera e il cappello sono neri.

Giopì de Sanga 🎭 Gioppino

La tradizione vuole che sia nato da Bortolo Söcalonga e Maria Scatolera a Zanica, Bergamo, dove vive con la moglie Margì ed il figlio Bortolì. Ha anche due fratelli, Giacomì e il piccolo Pisa 'n braga [Pisanbraga], e i nonni Bernardo e Bernarda.

La sua principale caratteristica fisica sono tre grossi gozzi, da lui chiamati le sue granate o coralli, che ostenta non come un difetto fisico, ma come veri e propri gioielli. Faccione furbo, rubicondo, vestito di grosso panno verde orlato di rosso, pantaloni scuri da contadino e cappello rotondo con fettuccia volante, di mestiere fa il facchino e il contadino, professioni che non svolge preferendo guadagni occasionali meno faticosi. Di modi e linguaggio rozzissimi, di buon cuore, porta sempre con sé un bastone che non disdegna di usare per far intendere la ragione, sempre comunque a vantaggio dei piccoli e degli oppressi Gioppino incarna il sempliciotto rozzo ma di buon cuore, pronto a difendere i deboli. Ha assunto, tuttavia, anche una connotazione negativa, come persona furbastra e inaffidabile tanto che nel linguaggio comune si suole dire fare la figura del Giupì di chi non mantiene la parola o usa mezzucci per concludere raggiri di poco conto. Gioppino oltre che essere una maschera è anche un burattino ed è protagonista di moltissime commedie per il teatro dei burattini. .

Meneghìn 🎭 Meneghino

Meneghino è una maschera lombarda che nasce nel Seicento. Impersona un servitore rozzo ma di buon senso che, desideroso di mantenere la sua libertà, non fugge quando deve schierarsi al fianco del suo popolo ed è assai abile nel deridere i difetti degli aristocratici. Il nome deriva da “domenighin”, appellativo del servo che la domenica era solito accompagnare le nobildonne milanesi a messa o a passeggio.

Meneghino è la maschera tradizionale milanese e come la sua città è generoso, sbrigativo e non sa mai stare senza far nulla. Da lui nasce infatti l'appellativo “meneghini” in riferimento agli abitanti del capoluogo. Ama la buona tavola e davanti ad una fetta di panetùn possono anche salirgli le lacrime agli occhi, non solo perché ne é molto goloso, ma perché gli ricorda la “soa Milàn” e il “so Domm” di cui non smette mai di vantarsi. Vestito di una lunga giacca marrone, calzoni corti e calze a righe rosse e bianche, cappello a forma di tricorno sopra una parrucca con un codino stretto da un nastro, ancora oggi, assieme alla moglie Cècca, trionfa nei carnevali milanesi.

This ship is one of the cutest in game but because of how idv handled their game and their personalities (annie being raised by an abusive and violent father while ganji being a very irritable and Anxious person, that prefers to be distant rather than talk about his feelings) it (kind of) can only exists thanks to the fandom, but i think they would have made such a cute Couple, their game in general (i I believe 3?) has a lot of Contradictions (⁠╥⁠﹏⁠╥⁠)
