Don't reblog screenshots of tweets reacting to scary headlines

Don't reblog screenshots of headlines

Avoid posting scary current events without clear, actionable steps for the reader to take

Be wary of those whose understanding of cruelty is more about what the victim is rather than what was done to the victim eg "op doxxed an indigenous person for calling out their hypocrisy"

Be wary of those who encourage harassment via "isn't this the guy who did xyz?" If they knew for sure, they would say so.

Am I helping minors or am I hating pedophiles?

Am I helping trans people or am I hating terfs?

Am I helping Jewish people or am I hating nazis?

Am I helping the marginalized or am I making them more paranoid?

Fear is the mind killer

its been rly heartening to see big tumblr accounts with a specific theme (or bit) take a moment to raise awareness for palestine. in many ways being vocally pro-palestine is far, far more important than donations right now. palestinians have said so too. if it weren't it wouldn't be so risky for people to speak out. its a war on human life but it's also a war on the very memory, culture and history of the palestinian people. we can help them fight the second one just by posting. solidarity matters more than anything in this moment.

I have a question for you: Have you checked your MAPS?

“What’s MAPS you ask? Well it’s a simple little way to remember if the criticism you’re giving is worth posting! It’s as easy as M-A-P-S!

First, does it come from a place of Mutual Respect?

Do you know the author or artist? Do you know them outside of their work? Would you want to hear their opinion on your work? Do you have any work to compare?

Is it the Appropriate Forum?

Are you cold-messaging them via the comments section on AO3? Is this during another conversation you were already having? Will they get a notification and get all excited only to see it’s you picking apart their art?

Do you have Permission?

Did they ask you for input? Did you ask them if they wanted input? Remember, kids, there’s a word for people who give unwanted negative input: asshole!

Is it Specific?

Are you focusing on one or two aspects, or are you criticizing the entire vibe? If you dislike the piece as a whole, maybe it just isn’t for you!

If you answered “no” to any of these questions, put down the keyboard and do something else! Your criticism is probably bad!

And remember, criticism that doesn’t follow the MAPS is just SPAM!

If you use Google Docs for your writing, I highly encourage you to download your work, delete it from Google Docs, and transfer it to a different program/site, unless you want AI to start leeching off your hard work!!!

I personally have switched to Libre Office, but there are many different options. I recommend checking out r/degoogle for options.
