The sunshine felt warm against your shoulders as you scrolled through Instagram, people milling around as they wandered through the paddock. You didn't feel as out of place as you usually did at the Australian Grand Prix, probably because this year you weren't here in the shadow of your older brother.

“Hey!” You heard your name being called by a familiar voice and you looked up to see a man decked out in black and yellow Renault gear striding towards you.

It’d been a year since you’d last seen him in person, but you heard about him regularly. Your brother had grown close to Daniel over the last year, and whenever you spoke to Scotty he always managed to say something about the driver. “Scotty didn’t say you’d be here.”

You shifted on your feet, knowing that wherever Daniel was in the paddock, your brother would be sure to follow. “I'm not here with Scotty.” And truth be told you were hoping to avoid him today.

“No?”

“I’m here with my boyfriend.” Boyfriend. The man your mother and sister loved, but your father and brothers hated. Scotty always had something snarky to say about him whenever you spoke, hence the plague-like avoidance.

“Oh, you have a boyfriend now?”

“Yeah, it’s still pretty new.”

You’d met Jason at a business lunch your unit manager had forced you to attend at the end of last year. It was a cliché meet-cute; you’d both reached for the same mini quiche. He was a hotshot doctor who's positive outcomes had earned him two paddock passes to the Melbourne Grand Prix from corporate. When you'd told Scotty Jason was taking you to the Grand Prix he'd called him a sell-out. You hadn't bothered pointing out that the comment didn't make sense.

“See these are the things I miss from not following you on Instagram,” he clicked his tongue. “You never accepted my request.”

“Uh,” it was true. His request had come out of the blue a month ago and you’d been so shocked to see it that it had been sitting in your notifications ever since. 

“I haven’t really been using it,” it was a lie, but you couldn’t exactly admit that you had just been ignoring his request. Not that you were ignoring it on purpose, you just weren’t quite sure why he’d sent it.

He didn’t seem to believe you, but he accepted your response all the same. “So where is this mysterious boyfriend?”

It was almost comical how as soon as Daniel said it, you saw Jason walking towards you, his hands in his blazer pockets.

You gave Jason a wave and a smile. “Fuck, he’s coming over. Be nice, okay?”

“I’m always nice what-”

“I’m serious, Daniel.”

Whoever Daniel had been expecting when you said you had a new boyfriend, the man that walked up to you and tucked his arm around your waist did not fit the picture he had in his mind. This man was in his late 30s at the very least and had grey speckling his dark hair and short beard. He was tall and a little imposing in the 'command respect' way a professor was.

“You’re Daniel Ricciardo,” he said, looking between Daniel and you. “You know Daniel Ricciardo?”

“He’s a friend of Scotty’s. Daniel, this is my boyfriend, Jason.”

“Nice to meet you, mate,” Daniel held out his hand and Jason, mildly starstruck, shook it. “How’d you two meet?”

“At the hospital. I’m a doctor.”

“Oncology?” You looked up just in time to see Daniel glance at you. You’d never told him the field you worked in, so he must have learnt it from your brother. It was such a mundane fact you were surprised it had stuck in his memory.

“Interventional radiology.”

“Ah, so X-rays and scans?” That’s exactly what your father had said when you’d introduced him to Jason for the first time, right before he’d blown up at you over the 15 year age gap. You weren’t naïve enough to think the relationship would last. Jason had already mentioned marriage and kids in passing, something you definitely weren’t ready for at 23. But you thought he was interesting and right now you were having fun.

“Not exactly. I do angiograms, PICC lines, ports, minor procedures. I did a tumour ablation last week, that was neat.” At least you had thought it was neat.

“Huh,” you could tell Daniel had no idea what he was talking about. “Cool. Are you going to the Red Bull garage?” The question was aimed at you.

“Nah, like I said we’re not here with Scotty and-”

“I can get you Renault passes,” it was a casual offer, like he could will a pair of garage passes into existence. You thought he probably could.

You said no just as Jason blurted out, “really?”

“Sure,” Daniel was looking at you, waiting for your response.

“I don’t know, I think Scotty would see that as a betrayal of the brand or something-” As much as Scotty annoyed the shit out of you, the last thing you wanted was to make him look bad. Or hurt his feelings.

“What Scotty doesn’t know won’t hurt him, right?” It sounded innocent enough on the surface but the look that passed over his eyes made you think there was a hidden meaning to his words; something you might want to explore pushed against a wall in his driver's room...

You shoved that thought out of your head the second it appeared and looked at your boyfriend, his eyes wide waiting for you to agree to Daniel's offer. "Only if you're sure."
