This though. Last year for a project at school in which I learned about tourism in Hawaii and how the islands have become dependent on it even though they don't need to be! Literally selling their culture! Obviously I don't have an real experiance with this because I'm white, but it's still so stupid how we (we being Americans, unless this is something in other places too) are being raised into thinking that all these places are essentially their products. That's fucked up.

self proclaimed leftists with entire graduate degrees on twitter not understanding that tourism in places like latin america and the caribbean is a form of neocolonialism even in places where the national economy is dependent on it. just because the government is making money off of ur lil excursions and hotel stays doesn’t mean regular citizens are, especially in your fave ‘tropical getaway spots’. the fact that sandals wanted to build an entire resort in tobago where my family lives might sound great for the economy or whatever until you realize that they would’ve closed off several acres of land and made it inaccessible to non-tourists which is fucking insane thing to even propose on such a small island. like i’m sorry but do you really think my family is grateful when you crackers come to visit during the winter?? do you really think your presence adds value to their lives?? when the govt invests money in ports but not paving the fucking roads anywhere that’s not downtown/vacation home territory?? you white losers need to put down ur marx for like half a sec and pick up a small place by jamaica kincaid. ​like lol if you wanna be a tourist be a tourist but don’t fucking act like anyone who refers to it as a contemporary form of colonialism is doing too much. ESPECIALLY when this sentiment is legit coming directly from the people living in the getaways you love to visit. i genuinely don’t understand how y’all can grasp the “there is no ethical consumption under capitalism” shit but can’t understand this.

50 Years Since Bloody Sunday

30 January 1972

10,000 marchers take to the streets of Derry, Ireland to protest against the British policy of internment, which meant any member of the public could be imprisoned without trial on suspicion of being part of a paramilitary organisation.

British soldiers open fire on the crowd of innocent civilians, killing 14. Many were shot with their backs turned, running away from the soldiers.

It was the highest number of people killed in a shooting incident during the conflict and is considered the worst mass shooting in Northern Irish history.

Bloody Sunday fuelled Catholic and Irish nationalist hostility towards the British Army and support for the Provisional IRA rose

Patrick Doherty, 31. Shot from behind while attempting to crawl to safety. Murdered by 'Soldier F'.

Gerry Donaghy, 17. Shot in the stomach while standing behind Gerard McKinney. Soldiers planted four nail bombs in his pockets to justify the killings.

Jackie Duddy, 17. Shot as he ran away from soldiers. Three witnesses said they saw a soldier take deliberate aim at him as he ran.

Hugh Gilmour, 17. Shot as he ran away from soldiers.

Michael Kelly, 17. Shot in the stomach while standing at the rubble barricade. Murdered by 'Soldier F'.

Michael McDaid, 20. Shot in the face while going to the aid of William Nash.

Kevin McElhinney, 17. Shot from behind while attempting to crawl to safety.

Barney McGuigan, 41. Shot in the back of the head when he walked out from cover to help Patrick Doherty. He had been waving a white handkerchief. Murdered by 'Soldier F'.

Gerry McKinney, 35. Shot in the chest by 'Private G'. Witnesses said that when he saw the soldier, McKinney stopped and held up his arms, shouting, "Don't shoot! Don't shoot!", before being shot. The bullet apparently went through his body and struck Gerard Donaghy behind him.

William McKinney, 26. Shot in the back as he attempted to flee. Murdered by 'Soldier F'.

William Nash, 19. Three people were shot while going to his aid, including his father Alexander Nash.

Jim Wray, 22. Shot in the back while running away from soldiers. He was then shot again in the back as he lay mortally wounded on the ground. Witnesses stated he was calling out that he could not move his legs before he was shot the second time. Murdered by 'Soldier F'.

John Young, 17. Shot in the face while crouching and going to the aid of William Nash.

John Johnston, 59. Shot in the leg and left shoulder on William Street fifteen minutes before the rest of the shooting started. Johnston was not on the march, but on his way to visit a friend.

Despite the British state issuing an apology in 2010, no soldier has ever been prosecuted for their involvement.

The same paratroopers murdered 11 innocent civilians outside their homes in Ballymurphy months earlier, including a priest who had been administering last rights to a dying man.

main character is a chinese-american lesbian coming of age in the 1950′s in san francisco

she forms a sort of relationship with a girl in class and they go to a lesbian bar secretly

can’t recommend enough!  

Her Body and Other Parties - Carmen Maria Machado

Carmen Maria Machado is the GOAT. Her writing is just incredible and some of these stories are haunting.

single handedly made me like short stories.

both Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers listed it as one of their favs. I Know the End is based on a story from this book.

Everyone in this room will someday be dead - Emily Austin

if you struggle with anxiety or/and depression and a fixation on death and/or illness, boy do I have the book for you.

Painfully relatable but also very funny. in a laugh at your own pain kinda way. and the main character is a lesbian in a relationship. I truly love this book and highly recommend.

I had it on my tbr for a year and when I finally started I finished it in one sitting. 

No One Belongs Here More Than You - Miranda July

definitely an acquired taste but one of my favorite books of all time.
