“Game of thrones tells its audience that women with broken pasts can only turn mad”

Okay but we have Sansa who lost her family, was held as a prisoner, was raped by a man she didn’t want to marry, used as a ploy by so many characters for her name. And now look at her, she works with her people, she never asked for anyone to hail her queen, she doesn’t take what isn’t hers, she doesn’t demand loyalty. She earns it. She is strong and is fierce and has become a leader. Without hurting others in the process.

We have Arya, who lost her loved ones, was on the run for years, had no one to come home to, had to learn to adapt and survive. She was broken by her training, left alone, abandoned, scarred. She was a lone wolf In a strange region. And now look at her, she doesn’t want revenge on a people that applauded and mocked her father’s beheading, she tried to help them. despite the events of her childhood She grew up a fighter, a protector, a savior.

We have Yara. Yara who was always subjugated and deemed inferior simply for being a woman. Yara who was repreatedly wronged by a system that oppressed women. She was always meant to be a ruler, to save her people. And that’s what Yara has done. Despite the constant sexism and belittlement Yara fought hard for her place and has shown all those who questioned her authority what it means to be a leader.

We have Brienne of Tarth, a knight, a honorary woman. She has always done the right thing. She was mocked by men and women alike for her choice to serve as a knight. She defied gender norms and stood her ground. Despite the sexism, despite the mocking Brienne proved a much better knight, a more honest human than any of the knights in all of the seven kingdoms. She didn’t use her abilities as a fighter to abuse rather she used her strength to provide safety.

Lyanna Mormont who was given so much responsibility at such a young age. Whose parents died, whose men have lied and tried to take her claim. but Lyanna never let that turn her mad. She never let her circumstances turn her into a harsh and unjust ruler. She ruled house bear with pride and integrity. The horrible events of her childhood didn’t turn her into a imperialist. Lyanna Mormont died a hero.

And there is also Gilly. A wildling who faced prejudice from the people of Westeros. Who was robbed of her virginity by the man that was supposed to protect her. She was abused verbally as well as physically. But she didn’t let that rage consume her or that prejudice. She didn’t let that lack of love from westeros fill her with anger. Rather she remained as brave and as resilient as ever.

So no, game of thrones isn’t sexist or anti feminist because daenarys Stormborn allowed a fire to consume her and used fire+blood to take back what was never hers.

Honestly...that’s perfect!

…Mansfield Park from Edmund’s perspective might look a good deal like Emma, actually.

You’ve got the good sense, the quiet life, the being accustomed to having the best judgement in his little community; then the subsequent falling in and out of temptation and trials, his own judgement proving faulty, other people’s affairs going in unexpected directions; and finally, though unelaborated on, the “oh. OH” moment when Edmund realizes that Fanny has been RIGHT HERE the WHOLE TIME.

Honestly, if Theon ends up dying I will just be dead inside because he’s had the BIGGEST character development throughout the seasons and I know it will be a beautiful parallel to have him die for the family that he realized he loves so much, but it will be such a huge blow. He’s become my favorite character as I witnessed the mistakes, damage, change, and growth and my heart will seriously break over the beauty of him dying for his family but also from the pain. I’ve loved this character for so many seasons and I became so invested. It says a lot about character development and especially an actor when you unconditionally love them despite all of the wrong they’ve done.

I’m reading Katherine by Anya Seton

and I’m torn.

On one hand, the attention to detail is breathtaking.  Seton has fully immersed me in the 14th century, palaces and plagues and all.  Geoffrey Chaucer’s brief appearances are delightful.  The friendships Katherine forms with the other women in her life are a driving force for most of the first half of the book.  Not to mention this gem:

“I am no duchess, no queen, but I have been your equal in love, for this I dare to tell you how I feel.”

image

On the other hand…

The romance.

image

I’m over two-hundred pages in, and Katherine just seems so miserable with John.  They’ve barely had a conversation about something other than how they love each other…and I cannot stress how few meaningful interactions they have had leading up to their affair.

He comes onto her as soon as his wife—her friend—dies, then even stronger as her husband is dying.

image

And when they finally get together, he’s in talks to get married the entire time.  Their “honeymoon” overlooks his future fiancee’s homeland.

He just steamrolls her hesitations and ignores how becoming his mistress decimates her sense of self-worth.  And then he gives her his deceased wife’s ring as a symbol of their love!

I’m Reading Katherine By Anya Seton

Every declaration of love or step forward in their relationship involves her crying and hating herself and her situation, and he is infuriatingly oblivious.

I get that a book published in the 1950′s would have faced backlash if Katherine actively pursued John.  And I’m sure the references to sex caused a scandal when it was first published…but I’d rather have the heroine enjoying the hero and their relationship than simply giving up.

Let’s hope the third-act break-up will lead to Katherine putting her foot down and John recognizing that she is his equal, not just in love, because right now, their “romance” reads less like a love story and more like harassment.

Ep 4 Spoilers

Nope, I still think Jon is an idiot and an awful leader. For a military “genius,” who “cares” about his men, he sure as hell made another boneheaded mistake by not listening to Sansa, AGAIN, and sending out exhausted, recovering men on a long road journey in the cold where they will be expected to fight a battle where they’re outnumbered. And if his decision was to do that because he just wants to keep Dany happy, that doesn’t help his case.

And why do these people never consider there might be an ambush? Honestly, what do they think Cersei was doing all this time? Like wasn’t preparing? Didn’t Cersei destroy Dany’s fleet once before? I can’t take ANY talk about Jon or Dany being rulers simply because they’re so incompetent.

And they all but wrote in yellow highlighter, “Dany’s paranoid!”

I’m not sure I have much to say about this episode beyond that. I feel awful for Brienne. But not really surprised. I will admit the Bronn scene was pretty funny.

I do think Sophie Turner just brought it when Sansa was mourning Theon and I think Emilia Clarke did a nice job too. Varys was incredibly interesting to watch. His reminder that it was about the people was I think a reminder to the audience as well in that it’s not just about these handful of characters, but millions.

But you’re in trouble if the queen you’re following us thinking it’s okay to kill a couple of thousand people to get what she wants.

She was always on this downward path. She’ll probably burn cities to the ground in the books too, should GRRM ever finish them.

“Dragons are the nuclear deterrent, and only Dany has them, which in some ways makes her the most powerful person in the world. […] You can have the power to destroy, but it doesn’t give you the power to reform, or improve, or build.”
