Reminders for the Anxious/Depressed Creatives

You’re more than what you make.

Your productivity does not determine your value.

It’s okay to do nothing sometimes.

Not everything you do has to result in a product.

Not everything you make has to be important, significant, or even good.

You can make things just for yourself.

You can keep secrets for yourself, whether it’s not posting some of your projects or not sharing your techniques.

You’re allowed to say no.

You’re allowed to rest.

Every time I'm around mosquitoes I start thinking about how people made the entirely correct connection between places with a lot of temperate stagnant water and the spread of malaria, but didn't quite connect all the dots - this place has stagnant water, this place has people getting sick with this same illness. Clearly it's the stinky water causing this, maybe it smells bad and the bad air is causing this. It's unhealthy to breathe the outdoor air at night, people who are out at night or don't shutter their windows tightly when the sun goes down are more likely to get sick because the bad air gets in.

The missing middle part was mosquitoes. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, and mosquitoes spread malaria.

I think this kind of thing would make a fun worldbuilding exercise. Have something in your world that does function the way people think it does, but they're completely wrong about why that happens. Or they've gotten the right connection, but backwards.

Holy rites that ward off evil but the Pure Substance is actually just antibacterial. Birds whose call is an omen of an approaching dragon, but these birds actually just have some symbiotic relationship with them. Half-elves that seem predestined to turn to dabbling with dark and lethal magic, but actually they just have a stronger tolerance of The Thing That Kills You due to hybrid vigour. Everyone knows that tigers never attack holy women because of a pact between their gods, but actually it's because a tiger is an ambush predator and the priestesses' headwear vaguely resembles a human face from the back, and the tigers can't quite tell whether she's facing away or towards them.

You don’t help a plant grow by berating it for not being big enough yet or comparing it to other plants that have grown faster - you help it grow by giving it the water and soil and fertiliser and space and sunlight it needs to give it the best chance of flourishing. And if it needs it, you give it something to lean against to help it grow tall if it’s struggling to stand up by itself.

That’s how you should treat yourself - give yourself the tools and care you need to flourish, and don’t be afraid to lean on other things for support if you need to. It’s easier to flourish that way 🌸

have u ever thought about the fact that the Fey sisters have purple-ish color schemes and Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth have blue/red palettes and they are related to the several cases tied to the Fey family by different circumstances and they’re foils of each other and parallels and they are forever intertwined and i think i might explode

"Mia kind of sucked actually" yeah geez she only grew up in a resentful death cult, got parentified at age 12, fled the only home she's ever known to avoid being pitted against that same sibling she had to raise, graduated law school alone, overcame trauma and depression to start a successful law firm alone in her mid-20's, and spent whatever free time she had researching emotionally painful cold cases and planning to take down a corrupt CEO. even if therapists existed in the trilogy (real therapy, not Athena's bs), when would Mia have had the time? she covered an incredible amount of ground just breaking free of Kurain and adapting to the world outside the village - again, without anyone she could entirely trust to catch her if she fell. but still, she changed and grew as a person in just the 3-year span we knew her. she got much better at managing her anxious and aggressive tendencies. she was more openly supportive toward Phoenix than any adult was to her. and she was literally TRYING to open up more to Phoenix and Maya on the night she died, by introducing those two halves of her life to each other despite the risks! if Mia Fey "sucked", then how high a standard should women be held to, hmm?

AI For Good, AI For Bad, AI for All

We talked about how to view AI as a writing tool, but I also want to acknowledge the worry about AI replacing creative jobs is completely valid, and we need to treat it with the caution it deserves. In an uncertain future, there are steps we can take to protect ourselves and our fellow creatives:

Support creative unions, back union strikes. The WGA strike is a critical example of how fair pay needs to be a factor, ever-changing technology is affecting creative jobs across the board, from novel editing to art direction. Support creative unions, back union strikes, and boosting efforts to form unions is one way to support the future of creative art remaining in the hands of those who make it. Support animation unions, support voice acting unions, support the formation of new unions to protect the future of workers.

Push for regulation. Even those working in AI are sounding the alarm that we need to have government regulations in place to ensure these systems are used in a way that benefits society, not tears it apart. Paying attention and participating by supporting candidates and policy will matter. Some promising motions have been made by the US Supreme Court rejecting copyright cases involving AI, but more needs to be done. We can get to a better future if we try.

Fight back against sketchy AI practices. Tor has once again been caught using an AI cover instead of paying an artist, something I promise you they absolutely can afford to do. Some companies are quietly switching out real narrators for AI. We do not need to accept a world where those critical to the writing process, be they editors, artists, or narrators, have their jobs stripped away by companies that make more than enough money to pay them. Call it out, don't buy content affected by it, and call it out on social media.

Be open and honest about how you use AI. As I've said before, I don't think AI is something you should boycott completely. What I do think is important, though, is to talk about how you use it. Trying to work out a plot snare, for example, or generating an AI image to help you figure out how to describe a room are decent examples of how it can be used as a tool, and it should be encouraged if it can genuinely helpful. Calling out AI-use passed off as original work is going to get harder, and one thing we can do is be honest with ourselves and others about how we use it.

Pay for your shit. Listen, I work in education. I'm double-dutying it when it comes to being a broke writer and a broke educator. But if you're an indie author and you need a decent cover and an editor that'll act more as a grammar-checker, you need to work with real people, which means you need to pay them what they're worth. As a creative you are part of a community of people who will need your support, as well as support you in turn. You'll only be doing yourself a disfavor by turning your back to it.

A better future is worth fighting for - and we can fight for it, no matter how bleak it looks.

For those of you who want to lock all of your works with all the silly AI scraping of AO3 (which AO3 is recommending you lock your works, as stated in this post)

Here is a quick and easy guide of how to edit ALL of your works at once.

image

From your Dashboard click on “edit works” on the far right. This will bring up all of your works that you can select.

image

Select all the works you want to edit, then hit “Edit” at the bottom right.

image

Scroll to nearly the bottom of the page where you find “Visibility” and select “only show to registered users” and then update at the bottom.

That’s it, all of your works have now been locked without having to go in and edit each fic individually.

I hope this helps!

"Do you ever dream of land?" The whale asks the tuna.

"No." Says the tuna, "Do you?"

"I have never seen it." Says the whale, "but deep in my body, I remember it."

"Why do you care," says the tuna, "if you will never see it."

"There are bones in my body built to walk through the forests and the mountains." Says the whale.

"They will disappear." Says the tuna, "one day, your body will forget the forests and the mountains."

"Maybe I don't want to forget," Says the whale, "The forests were once my home."

"I have seen the forests." Whispers the salmon, almost to itself.

"Tell me what you have seen," says the whale.

"The forests spawned me." Says the salmon. "They sent me to the ocean to grow. When I am fat with the bounty of the ocean, I will bring it home."

"Why would the forests seek the bounty of the oceans?" Asks the whale. "They have bounty of their own."

"You forget," says the salmon, "That the oceans were once their home."

When it feels like writing is impossible but you really really want to write anyway, just skip the bits that don't inspire. Write 15 openings of scenes and nothing else. Write that one emotional conversation with only the dialogue like a script. Write that one emotional conversation with none of the dialogue.

Be so self-indulgent you almost feel over-indulged by the end.

Sometimes you're torn between wanting to write but not having the spoons to actually do writing proper. So don't do it properly.

You Are Allowed To Have Needs. You Are Allowed To Take Care Of Those Needs. You Are Allowed To Have Your

You are allowed to have needs. You are allowed to take care of those needs. You are allowed to have your needs acknowledged and taken care of by others. You are allowed to be seen and heard and take up space. You are allowed to set boundaries. You are allowed to ask for help. You are allowed to (graciously) accept help. You are allowed to put your needs above other people's wants. You are allowed to leave situations in which your needs are ignored or dismissed.

you have to remember, if you're truly writing niche fiction, unusual fiction (and I don't mean writing popular tropes with a twist, or writing within well-selling genres but "a bit different") but truly odd, speculative and experimental fiction, unless you're insanely and extremely lucky, your reader-base is always going to be smaller and harder to find and establish than generic, run-of-the-mill material, because the readers are scarce/uncommon as well 💕

The first panel in a two-panel comic strip featuring characters from Ace Attorney. A shirtless and very handsome Detective Gumshoe is drying his neck with a soft, white towel. He’s covered in water droplets and enveloped in steam, suggesting he’s just come out of the shower. Gumshoe’s dialogue bubble says: Oh, heya Mr Edgeworth! What’re you… uh… what’re you doing here?
The second panel. A young Prosecutor Edgeworth — dressed in his Bratworth garb — stares wide-eyed at (the out-of-panel) Gumshoe whilst blushing furiously. His mouth hangs slightly open, and in his hand he holds a forgotten notebook labelled “Case Notes”, which presumably belongs to Gumshoe. Above him are the words: (Miles_Edgeworth.exe has stopped working). The background is pink and filled with steam, and Edgeworth has hints of greenish bokeh in his hair.

The first (but maybe not last??) time Edgeworth ever sought Gumshoe out in the precinct locker rooms.
