This is mega serious people 😮😶😐😑😳😦😯😧

I don’t care if Hillary Clinton is corrupt. I don’t care if she lies, if she cheats, if she eats bowls of newborn chipmunks for breakfast.

She is literally the only thing standing in the way of a fascist dictator becoming President of the United States with a Republican majority congress that guarantees he can do anything he wants and nothing will be able to stop him.

I was and still am a Bernie supporter, and I hate a lot of things about Clinton, but none of that matters anymore. If Trump is elected, people are going to die. Women are going to die when Roe v Wade is overturned and Planned Parenthood is defunded. LGBTQ people are going to die when conversion therapy is further legalized and more bathroom bills are passed. POC are going to die as Trump rounds up Mexican immigrants, gives more power to the police, and fuels the fires of Islamaphobia. Poor people are going to die as Obamacare gets overturned and further cuts are made to welfare programs. And that’s just in this country. That’s not even taking account the all-too-likely outcomes of Trump starting new wars in the Middle East and having control of nuclear bombs that he’s said he ‘would not rule out’ using.

This is no longer even about ‘the lesser of two evils’. This is not ‘scare tactics’. This is literally life and death. Don’t fuck around and tell me you’re voting third-party or not voting at all, because you don’t have that luxury.

A HOME FOR ANGELO

This is Angelo.

image

I saw Angelo one day a few weeks ago when I was going through Union Square here in NYC, where I live. He was sitting on the sidewalk at a dog adoption event with a volunteer. He was wrapped tight in a blanket and was resting on his friend’s lap. I got my own dog from the same adoption event three years ago. For some reason, I stopped and sat down next to Angelo and started asking about him. There was just something about him.

The volunteer with him said that Angelo has been in foster care ever since he was found tied to a tree in Brooklyn. When found, Angelo was neglected and afraid. That was five years ago. Angelo has never had a good home. He lives in shelters and foster homes, and spends his weekends at dog adoption events. Other dogs come and go, and Angelo remains.

image

Angelo was very eager for scratches and was giving a lot of kisses.

He has been well cared for by Mighty Mutts and a series of dedicated volunteers, but he has never had owners to love him. The volunteer I spoke to had been working with Angelo for a year. Every Saturday, he comes and sits with Angelo and people walk past him. He said, “I’ve been doing this for fifteen years and Angelo is one of the greatest dogs I’ve ever worked with.”

I got that right away. There was a reason I stopped.

So I sat there for a little while. At one point, one of the puppies got his tail stepped on and yelped. Angelo immediately stood up to check on the puppy, and then checked every other dog on the adoption line.

There is something about Angelo.

This year has been terrible, but I’m not letting 2016 go without making something good of it. So I am determined to get Angelo adopted to a good home. I tweeted about him, and some great people were interested in Angelo, but they were either too far or already had dogs. So here are the details on Angelo:

Angelo lives in New York, so he’d have to be adopted in the area so that Mighty Mutts can do a home visit before adoption. He should ideally be the only dog in the house, though he is good with other dogs. (I had my dog with me, and the two got along great and gave each other kisses. There were a lot of kisses involved in this whole affair.) He would be best suited with someone who has had experience with dogs, because he is a big, lovable guy. He is about eight now, so he is mellow. He has a lot of energy, but loves a cuddle and will likely sleep snuggled up with you if he can.

His volunteer said that for the right application (really make the case, maybe send a video?) he would be willing to drive somewhere within about a five hour radius of New York to do the home visit himself.

Angelo has spent his life without a real home. If you are in or around NYC and have been considering a dog, consider Angelo. If you can’t adopt him, please spread the word to anyone you know in the area.

I will sponsor the $275 adoption fee for Angelo, and you’ll be my hero.

To make an application for Angelo, contact Mighty Mutts. (And if you apply, let me know so I can follow up!) If you spread the word, please use the hashtag #ahomeforangelo

2016 has sucked. Let’s do this thing and get this awesome guy a home.

$50,000 immediately dropped into my bank account wouldn't improve EVERYTHING but boy it sure would be a grand, sexy little start to a good, happy life path, don't you think

How Airglow Can Help Us Understand the Sun’s Influence on Earth

You may have seen the famous blue marble or pale blue dot images showing Earth from 18,000 and 3.7 billion miles away, respectively. But closer to home — some 300 miles above Earth’s surface — you might encounter an unfamiliar sight: vibrant swaths of red and green or purple and yellow light emanating from the upper atmosphere.

This light is airglow.

image

Airglow is created when atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere, excited by sunlight, emit light to shed excess energy. Or, it can happen when atoms and molecules that have been ionized by sunlight collide with and capture a free electron. In both cases, these atmospheric particles emit light in order to relax again. The process is similar to how auroras are created, but while auroras are driven by high-energy solar wind, airglow is energized by day-to-day solar radiation.

image

Since sunlight is constant, airglow constantly shines throughout Earth’s atmosphere, and the result is a tenuous bubble of light that closely encases our planet. Its light is too dim to see easily except in orbit or on the ground with clear, dark skies and a sensitive camera — it’s one-tenth as bright as the light given off by all the stars in the night sky.

image

Airglow highlights a key part of our atmosphere: the ionosphere. Stretching from roughly 50 to 400 miles above Earth’s surface, the ionosphere is an electrified layer of the upper atmosphere generated by extreme ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. It reacts to both terrestrial weather below and solar energy streaming in from above, forming a complex space weather system. Turbulence in this ever-changing sea of charged particles can manifest as disruptions that interfere with Earth-orbiting satellites or communication and navigation signals.

image

Understanding the ionosphere’s extreme variability is tricky because it requires untangling interactions between the different factors at play — interactions of which we don’t have a clear picture. That’s where airglow comes in. Each atmospheric gas has its own favored airglow color, hangs out at a different height and creates airglow by a different process, so we can use airglow to study different layers of the atmosphere.

image

Airglow carries information on the upper atmosphere’s temperature, density, and composition, but it also helps us trace how particles move through the region itself. Vast, high-altitude winds sweep through the ionosphere, pushing its contents around the globe — and airglow’s subtle dance follows their lead, highlighting global patterns.

image

Two NASA missions take advantage of precisely this effect to study the upper atmosphere: ICON — short for Ionospheric Connection Explorer — and GOLD — Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk.

ICON focuses on how charged and neutral gases in the upper atmosphere behave and interact, while GOLD observes what drives change — the Sun, Earth’s magnetic field or the lower atmosphere — in the region.

image

By imaging airglow, the two missions will enable scientists to tease out how space and Earth’s weather intersect, dictating the region’s complex behavior.
