Il faut se méfier de l’eau qui dort (beware of sleeping waters) : means that the quiet ones can turn out to be the worst and that you shouldn’t assume what they’re really like (it’s pretty negative)
Tout vient à point à qui sait attendre : All things come to those who wait (à point means at just the right time)
Un tiens vaut mieux que deux tu l’auras (a ‘here you go’ is better than two ‘you’ll have it’) : A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush (tbvh I prefer the French way of saying it, it’s just a bit clearer lol)
Mieux vaut prévenir que guérir (preventing is better than healing) : better safe than sorry
[Il ne faut pas] mettre tous ses oeufs dans le même panier : you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket
[Il ne faut pas] mettre la charrue avant les boeufs (one shouldn’t put the plow before the steers) : you shouldn’t put the cart before the horse
Mieux vaut être seul que mal accompagné : it’s better to be alone than in bad company
Les bons comptes font les bons amis (good reckonings make good friends) : a debt paid is a friend kept; short reckonings make long friends (you should have a healthy financial relationship with your friends if you want to stay on good terms)
Paris ne s’est pas fait en un jour (Paris wasn’t built in one day) : French version of ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ (we still use the Rome version from time to time)
Tel père, tel fils/telle mère, telle fille : like father, like son/like mother, like daughter, etc. (obv ‘tel père telle fille’ and ‘telle mère, tel fils’ work too)
C’est la goutte d’eau qui fait déborder le vase (it’s the water drop that makes the vase overflow) : it’s the final straw
C’est la cerise sur le gâteau (it’s the cherry on the cake) : it’s the icing on the cake
Il n’y a que la vérité qui blesse : only the truth hurts

Hi(!),
If they liked Indiana Jones: L’homme de Rio
If they liked Fast and Furious: Taxi 1
If they liked Big fish: Amelie ou Mon oncle
La boum 1, La boum 2 (not negociable)
If they like period movies: La folie des grandeurs
If they like animation: Azur et Asmar or Kirikou et la sorcière
If they like adventure: Pierrot le fou or Tintin et le mystère de la toison d’or
If they like puns: Astérix et Obélix mission Cléopâtre
If they like musicals: Les demoiselles de Rochefort or Les parapluies de Cherbourg
If they like fairy tales: Peau d’âne or La belle et la bête
If they like drama: Les petits mouchoirs or De rouille et d’os
If they like biographies: La Môme or Coco avant Chanel or Yves Saint Laurent (not Saint Laurent which is more graphic)
If they like romance: La délicatesse or Une rencontre
If they want to see France: A bout de souffle or La baie des anges
Hope this helps! x
One of the most abso-fucking-lutely frustrating and terrible useful and effective methods of studying I’ve found is to practice simultaneous interpretation. What’s awesome is you can do this anytime your target OR native language is being spoken, as interpretation works both ways.
For instance, when watching the news at night, if I’m not multitasking in some other way, I’ll just start doing my best (no matter how terrible it sounds/how much I don’t know) to interpret it out loud into Russian (or sometimes Spanish or French). You can also do this in your head if there are other people in your house – that’s what I normally do.
Because you’re not interpreting for anyone, it doesn’t matter how badly you do. What’s important is simply practicing the rapid recall of words as they appear at native speed.
Interpreting into your target language is obviously much harder than interpreting from it, so for upper-intermediate learners it can be extremely helpful to find a news source in your target language. For instance, in Spanish and Russian I am advanced enough to try interpreting into it (again, albeit with MANY mistakes – but I’m not doing it for anyone but myself so it doesn’t matter). However, my French sucks. It used to be okay, and it is getting better, but I would not (and have never) called myself “advanced” at it [hopefully within a couple years]. Thus, it is easier to interpret French into English.
Here are some of the resources I use to do so:
French:
France24
EuroNews en Français
France Info
TV5Monde
France.TV
Streema France
rfi - Les Voix du Monde
There were all found via google and the same can easily be done for any language. Streema is a great resource for any country – for instance Streema Spain and Streema Mexico and Streema Russia – definitely an amazing resource that probably deserves its own post.
I hope this helps!
