So I Got Into Grad School Today With My Shitty 2.8 Gpa And The Moral Of The Story Is Reblog Those Good

Lan Wanji is great... As a plot device + romantic sub-plot device. He's a good husband! He makes the MC feel loved! He helps break the generational cycle of abuse of the previous generation! He is useful to bring out the theme of "love as chains vs love as an anchor" that runs through MDZS. Those things are important to the characters and the story.

But as a character? He's so replaceable. He lacks substance (not that he needed it). He's not particularly special if not for other important characters loving him.

He also has the narrative privilege of never having any serious responsibilities other than Wei Wuxian (which he CHOSE anyway). He doesn't have Sect to protect (not as leader, anyway). His choice to defend WWX happens after there's nothing he can actually do to interfere with the course of things. He didn't swear brotherhood with anyone. He raised LSH a bit but other characters also raised him.

All of this is fine, because he's the love interest. He's not a narrative foil or a parallel to the MC or an antagonist so he doesn't NEED to be a particularly complex or deep.

But damn, as a character alone? He pales in comparison to characters who are complex and unique on their own. I mean, who would read the story from his perspective?

Anyway! I'll always be more obsessed to ships that consist of warranted devotion rather than juvenile pining (like, c'mon, man, you MET AT SUMMER CAMP AND IT WAS HOT BUT THAT'S NO REASON TO BE OBSESSED)

like. almost every other character out there has so much responsibility hanging over them. even wwx, who maybe didn't have sect to lead, but instead had the "every move you make will be turned against you" kinda sword hanging above his neck.
