lee heeseung ⁂ academic rivals to lovers

lee heeseung is infuriating. the slight upturn of his lips into that smirk you always see before he inevitably corrects you, the mischievous glint in his eyes as he twirls his pencil with the tips of his fingers, the subtle twitch of his nose after you brush him off that tells you he’ll be back to bother you later. all of it makes your blood boil, but today has proven one, equally frustrating thing: even if the gods do exist, they don’t seem to care about you.

YOU’VE NEVER LIKED PARK SUNGHOON.

from the very first moment you both met, he was always a step ahead of you—academically, athletically, socially.

even when he wasn’t trying, it seemed like he was out to get you in every way.

whether it was the way he’d breeze through math equations that left you staring at the chalkboard for minutes on end— or how he managed to charm every teacher with his charming wittiness and smooth-talking nature, he just seemed… infuriatingly perfect.

but what made it worse was that he knew it.

“better luck next time, y/n,” sunghoon would say after every test you lost to him.

“don’t worry princess, you’ll get there eventually.” he’d say with a smirk.

and every single time, you would grind your teeth, roll your eyes, and ignore the smug grin on his face.

he was constantly teasing you, acting like your rivalry was all just a game.

he didn’t even take it seriously!— meanwhile, you were constantly working your hardest, pushing yourself to beat him.

but no matter how hard you tried, he was always there, effortlessly flawless. ─── 𝘔𝘖𝘙𝘌 𝘜𝘕𝘋𝘌𝘙 𝘛𝘏𝘌 𝘊𝘜𝘛 !

the teasing got worse during group projects, where you were often paired together due to your similar grades.

while you were focused on getting things done, sunghoon was focused on teasing you at every opportunity.

“come on, you don’t need to work so hard,” he’d say one afternoon when you were hunched over your notes in the library.

“you’re gonna get wrinkles from all that frowning. besides, you’re cute when you smile.”

you scoffed. “you’re delusional, sunghoon. maybe if you focused more on the project and less on making stupid comments, we wouldn’t be here all afternoon.”

he leaned back in his chair, flashing you that infuriating smirk.

“but tell me, where exactly is the fun in that?”

you hated how his teasing always got under your skin.

and even more than that, you hated how sometimes, when he wasn’t being his cocky self, you caught glimpses of something else.

a small, genuine smile when he thought you weren’t looking—the way his eyes seemed to soften, just for a split second, whenever you were caught up in your work.

but you told yourself it didn’t matter. he was your rival, nothing more.

until one day, everything changed.

it started on a regular afternoon—you were heading to the library to study, the dread of another upcoming test hanging over your shoulders.

you were determined this time to beat sunghoon, no matter what it took.

you had stayed up late the past few nights, reviewing your notes and going over practice problems.

there was absolutely no freaking way in hell you were going to let him win again.

as you approached the library, you spotted sunghoon sitting at a table near the back.

at first, you were ready to ignore him and focus on your work, but then you noticed he wasn’t alone.

a girl sat beside him, leaning close as they whispered and giggled together.

your footsteps faltered, something sharp making its way in your chest.

you didn’t know why, but the sight of sunghoon laughing with someone else—someone who wasn’t you—stung in a way that left you breathless.

you had never seen him like this before— his face was relaxed, open, and there was something intimate about the way they were sitting together, their heads close, completely absorbed in their conversation.

sunghoon’s usually cool and detached demeanor had melted away, replaced by something softer, something you didn’t understand.

and it hurt.

before you could stop yourself, you turned on your heel and walked away.

your chest was tight, and the rational part of your mind tried to convince you that it didn’t matter.

sunghoon was free to talk to whoever he wanted—you sure weren’t his girlfriend, and you certainly didn’t care about what he did outside of your academic rivalry.

but that didn’t stop the flood of emotions crashing through you.

the anger—jealousy—confusion, and somewhere, buried deep beneath it all, was the tiniest flicker of something else—something you refused to acknowledge.

for the next few days, you did everything you could to avoid him.

you stopped going to the library at your usual times, sat farther away from him in class, and when he tried to talk to you, you’d brush him off with a cold remark lacking your usual bicker or pretending you were too busy to listen.

if he noticed, he didn’t say anything, but you caught him glancing your way more often than usual, a frown tugging at his lips.

to distract yourself, you started hanging out with your friend wonbin more.

he was easygoing, fun to be around, and most importantly, he didn’t make your emotions spiral out of control the way sunghoon did.

you’d spend lunch together, study in the library in a different corner from where you and sunghoon would, and soon enough, he became your go-to when you wanted to take your mind off things.

but of course, sunghoon noticed.

it started with the glances—you’d be sitting with wonbin, laughing at one of his jokes, and you’d catch sunghoon watching from across the room.

his usual confidence was replaced with something darker—his jaw clenched, his eyes narrowed.

it unsettled you, but you told yourself it wasn’t your problem, he had no right to be upset when he had been laughing with that girl just days ago.

then came the confrontation.

you were walking to your next class, distracted by a conversation with wonbin, when you felt a firm hand grab your wrist.

startled, you spun around to find sunghoon standing there, his expression hard.

his grip wasn’t tight, but there was something urgent in the way he held onto you, as if he couldn’t let you leave without hearing him out.

“can i talk to you?” his voice was low, but you could hear the tension brewing beneath it.

“not now, sunghoon,” you replied, trying to pull your arm free, but he didn’t let go.

“no, we need to talk. now.. please?”

wonbin gave you a concerned look, but you forced a smile and told him you’d catch up later.

as he walked away, sunghoon tugged you into a quiet, empty hallway where no one could overhear you.

“what the hell is your problem?” he asked, voice barely above a whisper but filled with frustration.

your heart pounded in your chest.

“seriously—my problem? you’re the one acting like an ass.”

“i’m acting like an ass? you’re the one ignoring me for no reason and hanging out with him all the time.” his eyes flicked toward the direction wonbin had walked off in, his jealousy evident.

“oh, so i’m not allowed to have friends now?” you shot back, your voice rising in frustration.

“why do you even care?”

sunghoon’s jaw tightened. “because it’s driving me crazy, okay? seeing you with him—it drives me insane. i don’t know what’s going on, but—” he ran a hand through his hair, his frustration clear.

“why are you avoiding me, y/n? did i do something wrong?”

the vulnerability in his voice caught you off guard. you weren’t used to seeing him like this—raw, open, and confused.

it made your heart ache in a way you weren’t prepared for.

“i saw you,” you finally admitted, crossing your arms in an attempt to keep your voice steady.

“in the library. with that girl. you were laughing with her, and i just—”

you swallowed, unable to finish the sentence. “nevermind—it doesn’t matter.”

sunghoon blinked, his confusion deepening further.

“wait, what girl?”

you glared at him. “don’t play dumb, sunghoon. the girl you were whispering with the other day.”

realization dawned on his face, and for the first time in the conversation, he looked genuinely taken aback.

“you mean… my cousin?”

your stomach dropped. “what?”

“the girl in the library. that was my cousin, y/n. she was visiting for the weekend, and i was just showing her around.” he paused, his lips twitching as if he was holding back laughter.

“wait—no way… are you jealous?”

heat rushed to your face, and you immediately looked away, mortified.

“no! of course not—are you crazy?”

but your weak protest only made him laugh softly, his earlier frustration replaced by amusement— he stepped closer, his tone gentle now.

“you are— don’t lie to me, you’re totally jealous.”

“i’m not,” you mumbled, refusing to meet his eyes.

your cheeks burned with embarrassment. how could you have been so stupid?

sunghoon chuckled, his voice lowering as he reached out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind your ear.

“you’re really cute when you’re flustered, you know that?”

before you could respond, he leaned in, his lips brushing against your cheek in the softest of kisses.

the warmth of his plush and soft lips on your skin sent shivers down your spine, and for a moment, you forgot how to breathe.

when he pulled back, his own cheeks were dusted with pink, and he suddenly looked just as flustered as you felt.

“uh… i’ll, um, see you later,” he stammered, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly before quickly turning on his heel and walking away, leaving you standing there, heart racing, utterly speechless.

what the hell are you going to do with park sunghoon?

BE MY VALENTINE? . . NISHIMURA RIKI!

“GOOD AFTERNOON STUDENTS,”

you took a breath before continuing, “i hope you are all having a great friday and are excited for the weekend. before i let you off, i have a special announcement, in just a week, yongsan will be having their first valentines day festival. our very own decelis student council team will be fundraising for the ferris wheel, so please, help our council as much as you can and attend the festival with your loved ones. have a great weekend, study hard.”

you held your breath as you looked up at minji, she signed an okay before the red light in the corner shut off.

“good job yn, we’re signed off.” minji smiled and you tugged the headphones off your ears. you gathered all the papers on the desk into your hands, you let out a long sigh. the week was finally over, but the weekend was busier with the preparations of the festival.

opening the door to the central area of the broadcasting room, you smiled at all the members — thanking them. everyone was packing away their recorders and computers. seeing them leaving so early had you craving for your home, the soft sheets of your bed and the feeling of your head on your pillow.

“staying longer?” minji asked, her hand resting on your shoulder. she followed you as you placed the papers into a folder, shutting off the casting gears.

“unfortunately, i have to record some other things for the track team and for this festival.” you nodded, just hearing everything you needed to do was dreadful.

“right, the festival,” minji sang the last part of the sentence. she wiggled her brows at you mischievously.

“what?” you asked with a scrunched nose and curious eyes.

“oh i don’t know, i think you should take jungwon as your date to the fair.” she sighed dreamily. as she said his name, you looked around. although thankfully the room was partially empty and others in their own world.

“i’m pretty sure he’s busy,” you shook your head declining. you wrapped wires together, trying to look normal to minji, though your red ears and jelly legs could have been a large giveaway if observed closely.

“oh come on, just ask him. if he says no then that’s okay, at least you asked.” minji frowned. she rested her back on the table waving everyone goodbye as you did the same — thanking them for their time once again.

as the classroom emptied, the last student slipping out, you were able to comfortably talk with minji. she had a wide grin on her lips seeing you in deep thought.

yang jungwon was your longtime crush. you met him freshman year at the cat cafe you were applying for. his big round eyes and peeking dimples had you smiling at yourself. you got closer to him as time went on and school events grew closer. being on the broadcasting team, you worked almost side by side with the student council — a bonus. you never even thought of ever admitting your feelings for the boy, but as minji continued to egg you on, you might as well.

what can go wrong?

“okay, and let’s say i metaphorically agree to this, how could i even ask him out? i can’t just walk up to him and ask him to be my valentine.” you paused looking down at your sneakers. everything can go wrong.

“i knew it!” minji clapped her hands jumping up and down.

“hey wait, i never said yes — we need like a plan or something.” you placed your things into your bookbag as minji tapped her chin, thinking.

for a couple seconds it was silent in the room, just minji’s pacing on her feet and your anxious tapping fingers on your cloth bag. she was thinking for a while until she gasped, it was almost as if a light bulb went off in her head.

“you know nishimura from i think it’s like class b-2? he’s jungwon’s best friend, if we have him on board he can tell us more about jungwon and what he likes.” minji shrugged like it was that easy. you knew nishimura riki, everyone did. he was the tall, beautiful, quiet boy who excelled at almost everything. he was only close to a couple people, mostly his rugby team — that jungwon was on.

“what if he says no? then what?” again, getting worried of the entire plan. would riki tell everyone about your gigantic crush on his best friend? you’d be humiliated.

“when we get to that point we’ll see, but fingers crossed. yeah?” minji crossed her fingers with bright eyes. she grabbed her bag as well as sliding her arm across your shoulder.

chatting together through the halls, bidding goodbyes to those who stayed behind for other things — minji spoke, “hyein is gonna freak when she hears this.” the girl giggled.

oh, god.

BE MY VALENTINE? . . NISHIMURA RIKI!

THE RHYTHMIC SOUND OF A BOUNCING PATTERN EMITTED FROM THE GYMNASIUM.

you quietly shuffled in, hands behind your back with a box of warm cookies. hyein said it would be a good bribing method. let’s hope she’s right.

as you grew closer, you could see a uniform blazer thrown on the floor along with a bookbag in the corner. the boy’s figure stood in the middle of the gym as he dribbled the ball. his hair jumped almost animatedly, the long blonde streaks hidden in his brunette hair. he was almost suspended for dying his hair but got away with it by saying it was natural. you’ve known nishimura riki since junior high, he was always a fun person to be around. he made the room brighter when it was dark and sulum, you even caught yourself having a little crush on him — until jungwon came along.

stepping closer, riki threw the ball into the hoop, it went right in. another thing about riki was that he was gold at everything. sports, studies, and individuality.

the ball hit your feet and you reached down to grab it, placing the cookies on the floor. you looked up at riki and he looked almost surprised seeing you.

“hey,” you said, throwing the basketball at him.

“never thought i’d see you here.” the boy teased, bouncing the ball again. you walked closer — the pastries long forgotten.

for a while, there was no talking, just the expected sounds of the gymnasium. you both played together, laughs echoed through the room. almost forgetting why you were there, you called for a break. sitting on the floor, riki followed.

“i actually have a favor to ask.” you panted and you watched him rest back on his hands. sweat dripped from his forehead, he licked his lips waiting for you to go on.

“so, you know the festival for valentines right? i want to ask jungwon to go but i don’t know how, and i was just thinking because you’re his friend, you could help me.” you waited for an answer but he was still. this was a really, really bad idea.

“okay,” he shrugged, standing up. he walked over to his blazer and you silently cheered in your head. you stood up as well grabbing the box of cookies.

“i baked these last night, i thought if i was asking for something like this i should pay you.” placing the box next to his bag you backed up to the door looking down at your watch.

“i would stay but i kind of have to go, minji will kill me if she knows i’m late-“ you rambled but he cut you off.

“go ahead, thanks for these.” his lips formed a tight lipped smile and he shook the cookies.

whispering a small bye and giving him a thumbs up you quickly exited the gym. you ran across the halls with a smile, you didn’t think it’d be that easy.

BE MY VALENTINE? . . NISHIMURA RIKI!

STEP ONE: GET ON THE FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS.

riki rested his back on the tree, the leaves rustling above his head — falling every once in a while. he tapped away on his phone, popping chips into his mouth. you both sat together for lunch, a notebook in your hand scribbling down whatever riki said.

“are you going to be on the volunteer team?” you asked him without looking, tilting your head while writing.

riki stopped playing his game, he looked up. his eyes focused on the way your hair moved slightly in the wind and the way you bit your lip, concentrating.

“uh, not really sure, maybe?” he shrugged. he would’ve never thought to ever join things like that, but as you asked him, he really considered it.

“you should. i’ll have someone i know if i blow things with jungwon.” you chuckled looking at the sky. it seemed a bit weird to think of riki as a friend. you both didn’t know much about each other, except for your crush on his best friend.

“i think i’m free,” the boy muttered, he shut off his phone putting the bag of chips in his lap.

“good!” smiling at him, you went back to the notebook. your hands wrote quickly. riki also smiled, bigger this time. he didn’t know what it was or how to explain it but, with you, he felt normal — childish.

“okay, so, i have like three steps so far,” you turned the book to him. bright letters covered the page with three steps.

‘STEP ONE: GET ON THE FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS.

ft .. nishimura riki! :D

STEP TWO: ASK HIM ON A” FRIENDLY” (pre-date) DATE

note — he likes outdoor activities!

STEP THREE: ASK HIM TO BE YOUR VALENTINE TO THE FESTIVAL.

note — hardest step of them all :P’

“i think this sums up our plan, yeah?” you asked riki, he said nothing but let out a little laugh.

“hey! why are you laughing? did i misspell something?” turning the notebook to yourself you scanned the page. riki shook his head snickering louder.

“nah, just think it’s cute.” the boy stood up at the bell of the lunch period, he ruffled your hair grabbing your backpack.

“wait for me,” with a wide grin you caught up to riki shoving his shoulder playfully. nothing would compare to a moment so innocent and sweet, not even a quick interaction with yang jungwon.

BE MY VALENTINE? . . NISHIMURA RIKI!

YOU WERE AT THE FESTIVAL COMMITTEE WITH RIKI BY YOUR SIDE, AWKWARDLY.

“do we just help with anything?” whispering to riki, he only shrugged. his eyes were moving quickly over the crowd, trying to find his best friend.

“jungwon hyung!” riki yelled, raising his hand to gesture jungwon over. the cat boy jogged over with a smile, a clipboard in hand.

“i didn’t expect to see you here, nishimura,” jungwon teased, he waved at you patting your shoulder.

“hyein is actually working on some banners over by the game booths. if you want to help, riki you can work with me.” jungwon motioned to hyein, hyein was wrapped in a banner flapping around under it.

“okay, see you then,” running towards hyein, you helped her from under the large tarp. when she saw you, she started giggling and you did too. her red cheeks of embarrassment and messed up hair made you laugh harder.

riki, on the other hand, couldn’t take his eyes off you.

“got a thing for her?” jungwon asked, beginning to walk towards the ferris wheel. riki followed behind, eyes continuing to stay on your figure.

“what? n-no, not really.” the boy blinked multiple times, occupying himself by looking at the ferris wheel.

“you two look pretty close already.”

if only your friendship wasn’t based on you getting a date with one of his closest friends.

“so, how’s pretty boy?” hyein teased, wiggling her eyebrows.

“jungwon?” you stopped everything. you realized you hadn’t even spoken to jungwon, mind too occupied with riki.

“no, riki of course.” she said sarcastically with a scoff. she began to climb the ladder as you held it down.

“oh, i mean i haven’t really spoken to jungwon. i haven’t had the chance, maybe later tonight.” you shrugged looking at jungwon and riki. riki was helping jungwon lift things around, he looked so pleased to help out a friend.

“i don’t know, i kind of see you with riki.” hyein stated causing you to look up at her as if she grew three heads.

“what?! no way, we’re just friends. i think?” a friendship was never established so you weren’t really sure if you could call him a friend, maybe more of an acquaintance.

“alright but look, minji and i made a bet that i can’t disclose but if you end up with riki, i win a hundred bucks.” the girl walked past you leaving you utterly dumbfounded. you were stoned in place, were you going after the wrong boy? hell no, jungwon is the boy. right?

“hey yn!” a voice startled you from behind. their hand going to your arm to pull you from your trance.

“hm? oh, huening, hi.” you greeted him with a smile. his messy brown hair covered most of his eyes but you could see them creasing up with a wide grin.

“jungwon asked if you could help him set up the mic on the stage?” huening kai pointed to the stage where jungwon stood. his brows furrowed together with a frustrated look.

“okay, thanks kai.” you shuffled back on your feet still looking at the boy. why is riki still in your head? this is about yang jungwon.

jumping up onto the stage, your hands began to nervously play with the end of your uniform skirt. this was the first one on one conversation with him.

“hey, you need me?” jungwon spun around quickly, his red hair skipped upwards and he nodded.

“i assume you know how to do this since you’re on the broadcasting club.” jungwon chuckled, embarrassed.

without another word, you began to work on setting up the mic trying to hide away from the boy’s gaze. he was practically burning holes into the side of your face.

“i think this is good, if you need to lower it just shift this down and if you want to take the mic out, slide it forward.” he muttered an okay followed by a thank you. his eyes were large, sparkly almost. you could lose yourself in them with just one glance. his dimples made an appearance and if you could, you’d poke them all day.

as you were walking away with your eyes still on jungwon’s face, you tripped on the mic wire. the end of the stage looked clearer now as you were falling quickly to your face. with your hands out ready to somewhat catch you, a hand slipped over your waist, holding you tightly.

their hot breath rose the hairs on your neck and your ears were becoming hot peppers, they were a red that was definitely not normal.

“are you okay?” it was jungwon. his concerned words replayed in your mind at a thousand miles per hour.

holy shit, it’s yang jungwon.

“yeah, yeah, i’m fine. thanks!” you unlatched his arm from your waist, running off to find hyein.

what you hadn’t seen was riki was just a step away, his box of ribbon thrown on the floor. he dropped everything for you.

BE MY VALENTINE? . . NISHIMURA RIKI!

THE COLD BREEZE BRUSHED YOUR HAIR FORWARD AND YOUR LEGS SHOOK.

but that didn’t matter, riki just told you that jungwon agreed to go on the “date” with you.

“pinch me right now.” you told riki giving him your arm and shutting your eyes. his fingers pinched you harshly through his uniform blazer that covered you.

“ow! i didn’t mean that hard, jeez.” you rubbed your arm and riki laughed. you were both walking home together, the moon shone so vividly like it was congratulating you.

“i can’t believe it, are you lying to me nishimura?” you pointed a threatening finger at him with questioning eyes.

“why would i lie?” he asked, mundane. his mind was a bit cloudy. he wished he was lying, he wished you wouldn’t take action with your heart. if only you knew the secret jungwon held.

walking in silence, you had your head down looking at your sneakers with a cheek aching smile. a warm fuzzy feeling swallowed your stomach whole. it was nauseating but you asked if it could last forever.

opening the gate to your home, you turned to riki, “thanks nishimura, i owe you.” waving goodbye to him you ran up your stairs and to your door.

riki nodded, to no one in particular but the frown on his lips were seen from a mile away.

“oh wait! your blazer!” you shouted at the boy.

“keep it, it looks better on you.” he shook his head, and you smiled harder, yelling goodnight.

riki fell asleep that night with a bitter taste in his mouth. he wished he could pinpoint the feeling however it only left him with more questions. it’s not like he liked you, well that’s what he kept telling himself.

standing in front of the bike rack, you held a picnic basket in front of you. the sun was hot against your skin and everyone was out with their own people. you had gotten up early in the morning to get ready for the date. you even had it in your calendar. step two is complete!

“yn! sorry, did i keep you waiting?” jungwon called from behind, he looked better in casual attire than in his uniform.

“not at all, i just got here actually.” you lied, you’ve been standing there for thirty minutes checking your watch.

“good, i have a place.” he smiled, taking the basket from your hand. as a duo, you both began to walk alongside one another talking aimlessly. getting closer to the place, it was quiet. a small pond and patches of grass all over with trees making shade.

“i come here often with my dog.” jungwon sits down, placing the basket in front of him.

“i hope you like fruit sandwiches, they were a bit difficult to make.” you laughed as he handed you one. jungwon cracked a smile.

“i bet they’re great,” he breathed out, taking a bite of the strawberry treat.

for a while it was a subtle conversation. getting to know one other more. during school it was just about extracurricular activities or what you thought about the lesson. nothing personal, maybe it was better that way.

“so, when did you and nishimura become friends?” he questioned wiping his lip.

“oh, just recently. i found him in the gym playing basketball and we kind of just started talking from there.” remembering the interaction from a week before, you subconsciously grinned.

“i think he likes you,” jungwon blurted. you stopped from taking another bite into the sandwich. your forehead creased with wonder.

“i mean, i know my best friend and i’ve never seen him smile so much around someone.” the boy continued without seeing your face. you were astonished. no way, maybe jungwon misunderstood. there was no way.

“oh right! i actually wanted to ask you something,” jungwon placed his sandwich down, fetching his phone from his pocket. “what do you think about this gift for my girlfriend?”

everything froze. it felt like multiple punches were thrown at your stomach, one after another. girlfriend? since when did he have a girlfriend? and if he did, why are you here? the cream from the pastry became too sweet, almost disgusting.

“i actually haven’t told anyone about her, except riki, and obviously you.” and one really hard slap to the face. riki knew? and he didn’t think to tell you?

“uhm, the pink one is fine,” you mumbled. this was betrayal, downright betrayal. was he trying to humiliate you? was this what you owed him, humiliation?

“actually jungwon, i’m not feeling too well. i think i should get going.” he looked up from his phone, you began to stand up, possibly to run the hell out of there.

he stood up as well, “do you want me to take you home? are you alright? you look pale,” god why did he have to be so caring.

“no, no, please stay. enjoy the rest of the food.” you tried to smile but the growing hotness of your eyes made it impossible.

turning around, you sped off. your feet moving far too quickly for your brain to process. you pulled your phone out, clicking on riki’s contact.

[ TO: NISHIMURA! ]

why didn’t you tell me jungwon had a girlfriend? i just humiliated myself by going on a date with him.

you shut your phone off, walking along the riverside. the small currents crashed together.

ding!

[ FROM: NISHIMURA! ]

you were excited about the date, i couldn’t tell you.

[ TO: NISHIMURA! ]

so you let me go on a date with him? to embarrass myself? i thought we were friends riki.

for the entire night, you kept your phone far away from you. it was one thing to read the messages, but it was another to think about jungwon.

friends aren’t supposed to let each other down.

BE MY VALENTINE? . . NISHIMURA RIKI!

YOU SWEPT THE CAFETERIA SILENTLY, HUENING KAI RIGHT BESIDE YOU.

“how much do you want?” he asked, sitting down on one of the chairs. his broom sat beside him, he was a horrible duty partner.

“just ask her yourself, i’m not in the mood.” the boy was asking if you could ask minji out to be his valentine to the festival. this was not what you wanted after a ruthless weekend. minji and hyein could only sigh seeing you starfished out on your floor with a frown.

it was the day before the festival and love hanging in the air. you hadn’t spoken to riki after the incident, thinking it was best if you didn’t. sure you felt bad for yelling at him over text, but you would’ve been over the whole jungwon-girlfriend thing by now if he told you prior.

you dragged the broom along the floor, trash littered everywhere and huening kai’s annoying voice in the back.

“please, please, please!”

throwing your head back with a groan, you agreed.

“but ask her out with like flowers or something, i’m not asking her empty handed.” you shrugged taking a seat beside him. he began to go through his wallet to pay you.

“i thought we were the only ones with an agreement,” a familiar voice spoke from in front of you, the person you dreaded to see.

“oh would you look at the time, i’m busy!” huening kai jumped up and before you could drag him back down, he slipped through your fingers.

riki sighed, he took kai’s place. his shoulder brushed yours and your eyes were glued onto your sneakers. riki looked at you. he missed you, those two days were longer than ever.

“i wanted to say i’m sorry. i should’ve told you, but seeing you so happy, i didn’t want to ruin anything. i also thought jungwon was joking about the girlfriend thing, but i guess not.” his hands clenched his sweater into a ball. his foot bounced up and down nervously.

you stayed quiet for a moment. it wasn’t his fault, it wasn’t jungwon’s either. it was nobodies really. that’s just the way things work, you move on.

“it’s okay nishimura, it wasn’t your fault. i shouldn’t have acted the way i did.” you smiled at him, forgiving him. it felt better than being mad at him. it was like a burden weighing down on your shoulders.

“i’m glad we’re friends again.” he added. to you, it felt a bit odd to call him a friend. you felt a bit of a spark with him. you didn’t feel so nervous around him like you did with jungwon. you seeked him out in crowds, instead of jungwon. if you didn’t like jungwon anymore, who was your next candidate?

“wanna go to the festival together? i bought tickets before the whole fiasco.” you chuckled, plucking them from your pocket. you gave one to him as he nodded also with a smile.

“good, i’ll see you there then?i have to finish cleaning up the cafeteria, now that huening left.” you rolled your eyes.

“let me help you, it’s the least i can do.” riki grabbed the other broom.

throughout the duty period there wasn’t much cleaning just you and riki messing around playing with the sticks. his laugh was something you could hear for years and he would say the same.

hyein and minji were around the corner with peeking heads and hyein smirked at minji, “i win.” she whispered.

BE MY VALENTINE? . . NISHIMURA RIKI!

“HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!”

hyein jumped at you, she had cotton candy in her hand. the festival was a success, everyone was having fun with their loved ones. it smelt of sweetness and passion.

you walked through the gates handing your ticket to a booth, jungwon stood inside.

“oh hey! are you feeling better?” he asked, placing your ticket in a box.

“yeah, i think i just had to much sugar, sorry for leaving you. did you get her the pink one?” you cupped your mouth whispering to him.

he smiled nodding. “she loved it,”

smiling as well, you left the booth to meet hyein. she grouped with minji and huening kai. the couple holding hands and minji had a bouquet in her hands. riki nowhere in sight.

“have you guys seen riki?” you asked, glancing around the crowd. did he ditch you?

“i saw him by the ferris wheel.” huening kai pointed to the long line of familiar faces.

“thanks,” you ran over dodging running kids and wandering groups. the ferris wheel was the main event and the heart lights lit up the entire festival.

riki was in line, he was also looking around for you. he was flapping a letter against his hands.

“nishimura!” you called and he waved you over.

“did you get my text? i told you to meet me here.” riki asked, pointing to his phone.

“oh, no i didn’t,” taking your phone out, you looked at the message he sent you.

[ FROM: NISHIMURA! :P ]

meet me at the ferris wheel! i’ll save us a spot :D

you chuckled lowly, looking up at riki. he had a light blush running over his cheeks. he looked away but you still teased him.

“i’m rubbing off on you,” you poked his shoulder. you glanced at the envelope in his hand.

“what’s that?”

riki hid it under his coat, telling you it was for later. you shook your head and the instructor called you next for the ride. riki’s hand rested on the lower part of your back, guiding you.

oh no, what’s this feeling? it was exactly like the feeling you got when you first met jungwon. confused, light, giddy. everything started to make sense. you like nishimura riki, yang jungwon’s best friend.

the sky was colored in a pink and purple hue, an exact replica of your heart. sitting so close to him on the ride made your brain start jumping jacks out of your head.

“this is for you,” he gave you the envelope. it was red and had a single heart on the front with your initial.

“what is it?” your tongue was numb. your fingers shook, this is what having a real crush was like.

“just open it.” he looked away and when you both reached the top of the ride, you heart almost leaped out of your chest.

you opened it, there was a letter, and it read —

Dear Yn,

happy valentines day! i hope you’re reading this, if not, i didn’t have the guts to give you this. but if you are, here goes nothing. i am in love with you. i have loved you since junior high when i first met you on the soccer field after hitting you with a soccer ball and having to carry you to the infirmary. i promised not to hurt you again, physically and emotionally, ( you said you hated me ). i realized after we became closer and you had a plan to date jungwon, that i needed to shoot my shot before i lost you forever. so, this is me shooting my shot. can i be your boyfriend?

Love,

Nishimura Riki.

the huge beam on your lips could easily tear your lips apart. you could feel your senses again, everything fit like a puzzle piece. you were in fact deeply in love with him.

you turned to riki who still had his head to the side. you leaned forward placing a kiss on his cheek.

“i would love it if you were my boyfriend.”

the boy looked at you with big eyes, his lips were parted in shock but they soon curved up into a smile. his hands held your face and he inched closer leaving a peck on your lips.

“happy valentines day, i guess your plan didn’t work.” he teased leaving another kiss, this one longer.

“that’s okay.”

“does this mean i’m your valentine?” riki moved your hair from your face and the ride was coming to an end.

“be my valentine nishimura riki.”

Hiiiiiii hope you are doing well!!!! If you feel up to it could you pls write a short story or whatever of Aomine x y/n college au with some kind of friends to lovers or enemies to lovers I rly don’t mind, fluff or nsfw idm whatever you feel like I am just a bit of a hoe for the tension and build up 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

omg honey 😳😳😳 you’re talking to the CEO of building tension between herself and her crush, so this is right up my alley lmao I hope I won’t disappoint

Fine Line // Aomine Daiki x Reader

Context: college!au in which your best friend Aomine is all your friends talk about, but you can’t see what the hype is all about.

Pairing: Aomine x gn! Reader

Warnings: some cussing, tension between the two main characters, some mildly suggestive passages but still sfw but overall it's fluff 🥰

“That dude is so fucking sexy...”

“Oh my god, and he plays basketball too?”

“Should we go watch him train on the court?”

You glare at your new friends, an amused expression on your face. Something about them gushing over your best friend is somewhat funny. You’ve known Aomine for too long to be able to see what they’re seeing. To you, the blue-haired guy is the dumbass that has been following you around and pulled you into some shenanigans since your first year of university. The two of you have met during orientation week and bonded in the strangest way. You didn’t have any common interest, and to be frank, you initially found his personality irritating. He always has this aura of “I’m too cool for you” surrounding him, as he carelessly does things, like the notion of consequence is foreign to him. Yet, you still sit next to each other in every classes you have in common, and soon enough, he is in your apartment every night, invading your space with not an ounce of shame in his body.

To this day, you still wonder what makes him your best friend. He’s an arrogant, slightly pervy idiot, yet you’d take a bullet for him at any time. And as for him, well you are as clueless as what makes him stick around. It’s not like he can’t find anything better and has to settle for you as his sole company; Aomine is fairly popular, even on your big campus. He frequently gets invited to parties, is constantly asked on dates, he’s even able to get extensions for his assignments by sweet-talking his lecturers. So really, he can be well off without you. But for the past years, he’s is constantly somewhere around you, no matter what, even going as far as turning down dates to hang out with you. Most of the time, you don’t demand anything from him, but he’ll constantly show up, wherever you are, just to kill time in your company.

You smile as your friends finally decide that they will go to the outside court to watch their new eye candy. You haven’t told them how close you are to Aomine, because it would ruin the fun for you. Hearing them fantasize on him when you’ve seen him in his most unattractive moments makes it ironically funny.  As you approach the court, however, you quickly realize that you can’t hide your proximity with him anymore. As soon as his blue eyes lay on you, he drops the ball to come to you, a stupid smile plastered on his face.

“Bestie!”

“Don’t call me that” you grunt.

He laughs, coming in for a hug that you decline. He’s sweaty, and you’re wearing a nice shirt, so you don’t want his stench on you. You fail to notice your friends witnessing your interaction with the athlete student, both completely flabbergasted.

“You should go back to your game” you say, noticing his teammates looking his way.

He turns around, following your gaze, before nodding. But before he goes, he removes his sweaty t-shirt and throws it right at you. You catch it in extremis, glaring at him.

“I’m not a fucking laundry basket Daiki, don’t throw your dirty clothes at me!”

He sends you a flying kiss while you're scolding him, quickly reprising his place on the court amongst the other players. You swear as you hold his t-shirt by the tip of your fingers, and when you turn around, you meet the shocked faces of your friends.

“Y/n? For how long have you known him?!”

You smirk. Well, this might be the end of the fun for you, but it was entertaining, while it lasted.

“That moron is my best friend” you casually say.

They both look at you in a complete state of incredulity. Yet, they can tell you aren’t lying. From the small interaction that they have witnessed, they can easily guess how well acquainted you are with Aomine.

“Couldn’t you say something about it earlier?! Dude, we’ve been down bad for him for so long, and you just... knew him?”

You raise your shoulders. Granted, if you have told them earlier, maybe they could have had a better chance at asking your best friend on a date. You could have introduced them, playing Cupid for your buddies who genuinely see Aomine as the best catch out there.

“It was funny listening to y’all talking about him like he’s an actual hot ass. Truth be told, he’s a giant dummy” you admit. “Oh well, I guess I had my fun. Sorry about that.”

You momentarily disappear to put Aomine’s t-shirt in his bag and go back to the side-court, acting like you haven’t just dropped a bomb on your friends who both have crush on the blue-haired boy.

“Is that it, y/n? Or are you keeping him for yourself?”

“Huh?”

“Yeah, we’d respect it if you had something going on with him.”

It’s your turn to look at them with round eyes. The idea of anything romantic going on between you and your best friend is an absolute absurdity. People have at multiple occasions assume that the two of you are a couple, and every time, your reaction is the same: Aomine laughing, and you rushing to deny such stupid assumption.

“I’m not interesting in him, he’s all yours” you declare. “Honestly, I really can’t see what you find in him.”

You stretch your arms, looking for your best friend on the court. You’re lying when you say you can’t see how he’s attractive, because he definitely is. Especially now, when he plays basketball; the way he owns the whole court, running from one side to the other, lean muscles glistening as the sunrays hit the sweat beads on his body, his face contortioned under concentration. He is objectively a very handsome guy, and you may deny it as much as you want, you can sometimes feel your heart race when you see him under certain lights. But for the most part, Daiki is just Daiki. And you can’t imagine him as someone else to you.

You stay on court till the match ends, you friends having to leave at some point, which they truly dreaded because it meant that they couldn’t admire their eye candy anymore. You remain there knowing that Aomine will have eventually ended at your place this evening, so you might as well wait for him to finish so he can drive you home instead of taking the bus. He finishes, bidding his teammates goodbye before coming to you, a small smile on his lips. He always smiles when he sees you, which is quite cheesy in your opinion, but you can’t change his ways.

“Thanks for waiting for me” he says after taking a few sips of water.

“I want you to drive me home.”

He chuckles, putting on a clean t-shirt, and taking his bag as the both you walk out of the campus. The air is fresh, and you look at the cloudless sky in search for the first stars. They usually shine timidly at this point of the day, so you may have to search for them for a while. You don’t notice your best friend watching you, a soft smile on his lips. He likes these small habits of yours, the thing that you do casually, without even thinking that they’re noticeable, let alone appreciable. You still walk for a bit until you reach his car and you get in.

The journey is short in car, contrary to your usual thirty minutes in the bus. You quickly get in your apartment, letting a sigh of relief leave your mouth as you remove your shoes and find some snack in the kitchen. As expected, Aomine navigates around your place like he’s the one actually living here, and in some ways, he sort of does.

“Can I take a shower?”

“Yeah, you’ve got some clean clothes in my drawers” you reply chewing on your snack.

He nods before walking towards the bedroom and it’s only then that you realize that you’ve given the greenlight for him to snoop around your drawers. And it’s surely not something you want him to do. You guys may be close, but the thought of him going around your stuff, probably seeing your underwear, is terrifying. You rush to your room, hoping that you can intervene before he sees too much.

“I’ll get the clothes for you” you spurt out as you join him.

“Don’t kill my fun y/n, you have some interesting stuff in there...”

He looks at you smugly, holding some of your underwear in his big palm and you are quick to get these back. Cheeks red, you look like the perfect victim for Aomine’s teasing.

“So, when do you where those, huh? For who do you wear them?” he asks while leaning towards you.

You push his face away with your hand, clearly flustered but trying your best to hide it.

“It’s none of your business Daiki, take that fucking shower so I can get some rest from you.”

Laughing as he finally gets his clothes, the tall boy walks towards your bathroom, but he turns around one last time, and you can tell that he is not done getting on your nerves.

“That blue one, it matches my hair” he says as he throw one of your underwear at you – one that you haven’t noticed he’s been holding all along.

You are speechless, he really has no sense of boundaries. To be honest, that has always been the dynamics in your friendship. Aomine, for some reason, has never once hesitated to act like your belongings are his too, taking ownership of your whole space and personal effects. How many times have you come back home to him peacefully napping in your bed, or have you found his clothes in your laundry basket because he’s felt like taking a shower at your place? Or all the times he’s answered the phone for you, talking to your parents like he actually is their child.

When you think about it, there is no wonder that people will automatically think that you are a couple. In some ways, you act like one – always hanging out, basically living together, constantly taking care of each other in the most mundane way. You cooking for him, him walking you under his umbrella on rainy days, him buying your favourite snacks when he’s eaten all of them, you letting him have to best pillow when he sleeps over. And you ponder if this is how things should be. Is that really friendship? At the same time, you don’t want to change this dynamic; if the both of you were to behave differently with each other, it would probably be the end of your bond. It is the fact that your relationship is not necessarily bounded to conventions, which leads to outside judgement. But you don’t want others to get to your head.

As far as you are concerned, Daiki is your best friend.

You lay in your bed, lost in your thoughts. You really try not to overthink it, because for the longest time you didn’t even bother to reply to anyone making assumptions on you and Aomine, but it’s getting harder lately. You can’t understand where these doubts come from, and you can’t shake them of. Are you in denial and may actually be into him; or are you really just friend with him?

The scent of your shower gel takes you out your reflections, and you look up, seeing the object of your thoughts in front of you. In a towel. That’s all. You struggle to keep the red from reaching your cheeks at this sight.

“Dude, where are your clothes?” you ask, trying not to look.

“Was too focused on your underwear that I forgot mine here” he laughs. “What’s up with you?”

“Huh?”

“Why aren’t you looking me when you speak? That ain’t like you.”

You swear – you really aren’t sly. Reluctantly, you look up, facing that malicious smile that Aomine has on his face sometimes.

“Is it me? Do I make you shy when I stand half naked in front of you?” he asks not necessarily expecting an answer, as he knows he is right.

“Shut up” you mumble, trying to hold eye-contact with him.

The tall man looks smugger than ever, his hands on his hips, right wear the towel stands. To your surprise, he climbs on the bed, leaving water stains from his still wet body, and you move in defence when he is way too close to you.

“It’s cute, that I make you feel this way.”

“As if” you lie, “stop feeding your ego. Are you so lonely Daiki, that you absolutely need attention? Because if you need a date, I have two friends who would totally love going out with you.”

He scoffs at your word, laying next to you. You can feel the heat of his body against your skin, and you wonder for how long can you defend yourself. Soon enough, you won’t be able to lie, pretending that the way he is right now doesn’t do things to you.

“I don’t want a date” he lets out.

“So that’s your life now, just being around me at all times?”

“I’m fine with it.”

His voice is tinted in honesty, and you suddenly feel like your doubts aren’t so senseless. This time, it isn’t the outside work that gets into your head, it’s Aomine himself. Are you so clueless on the nature of your relationship with him? Are you the only one who refuses to see it?

“Daiki, are you fine with being my best friend?”

You don't mean to ask the question; but it still got out of your mouth, regardless.

“What kind of question is this?”

He sighs, as a silence sets between you. You don’t expect him to take this long to reply, and the fact that he hasn’t said a word yet further confirms that like you, there is some lines that are blurred for him.

“Forget it, you don’t have to answer” you let out.

You aren’t sure why you don’t want him to say a word anymore; it’s certainly fear, but you are too proud to admit it. You prop yourself up, ready to leave your bed and act like nothing happened, but your best friend’s hand wraps around your arm, pulling you back to the mattress.

“Dai-“

He doesn’t give you the time to say a word that he has you in dangerous proximity to his body. You can’t move, too confused by what is going on to say a word. And maybe it was the lightning, or maybe, it is a revelation, but you have never seen Aomine like this before. At this very moment, as you eyes lock in his, you can only feel your heart beating in your chest to an abnormal rhythm, the rest of your senses being completely out of service. You are unable to grasp any notion of time or space. At this very moment, it’s you, and him. Nothing more, nothing less.

“Shit, y/n, how can you even ask if I’m fine being your best friend?” he says, voice low in your ear. “I love you but you’re one huge dumbass. I’ve been making moves for months, so again, how can you ask if I’m ok with just being your best friend?”

You gulp, processing his words. It’s an overflow of information, and you struggle to understand it, let alone realize that this moment is happening. Everything seems so surreal, yet you are not hallucinating.

“I can’t stop smiling like an idiot when I see you, it’s absurd” he laughs, “I don’t know when or how, or why, but at some point I stopped being satisfied with simply being your friend. Can you blame me for that?”

You slowly shake your head as an answer, still trying to find the words to keep this conversation going on your side. In the meantime, your silence is interpreted as an opportunity to keep talking by the blue-haired boy.

“I’m gonna sound disgustingly cheesy, but that’s what you do to me. I think I’m in love with you at this point.”

His last sentence goes straight to your aching heart. You are speechless; however, you know that you have to speak before it’s too late and that you start overthinking things and draw yourself out at the last second before you actually get to be completely honest with him and with yourself.

“Daiki?” your voice is low, like it’s struggling to get out of your lips. But you gather all the courage you have in you, understanding that if you stay silent any longer, you might lose him.

“Can you kiss me?” You finally ask.

His answer doesn’t take long to come. Tan hands are already cupping your face, while the distance between the two of you progressively disappear. His lips finally touch yours, guiding you into something that you didn’t know that you were craving for so long. It feels like your heart is blooming, a wall falling down as you recognize the truth. It is no longer a mystery why you like having him around, or why he always want to be by your side. Everything make sense, and the way your entire self melts under his touch only prove that this is right. He pulls you onto his laps, only covered by the towel, and you can’t make sense of reality as you sink in further. When the kiss comes to an end, you open your eyes, expecting to see something different.

“So, I guess I’m gonna be the one to see you in these undies, huh?”

“Oh, shut up Daiki!”

In appearance, it is the same old Aomine. The arrogant, slightly pervy idiot, that is always in your space. In your heart, however, he is Daiki, the boy that you can’t imagine not having by you at all times.

Because there’s a very fine line between loving someone as a friend, and loving someone as a soulmate, and you two have just crossed the line.
