Remus Lupin was not a sentimental person. He did not need to be. He loved his friends. He knew that. They had learned to transform into animals to be with him on the full moon. James, Peter, and Sirius were the best friends he had ever had. Lily Evans was a very close second. Had she known the boys had undergone animagus training, he was sure she would’ve joined them. She had been the first to discover his secret in their third year, and since she would leave him chocolate frogs after the full moon.

Remus Lupin had the best friends he could have ever asked for. He knew that before walking into the apartment to find them all jumping out from behind furniture, shouting, “Surprise!”

Remus was not a sentimental person. Yet, he was on the verge of tears as his friends presented him with a chocolate cake with 25 candles. He had had a particularly rough birthday that year. His father had passed the year prior, and this was his first birthday without either of his parents. Remus loved his job as the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Still, a day full of teenagers and all their issues had tired him. The full moon was the previous week, so he felt sore and cranky.

Yet, as Lily Evans Potter handed him her five-year-old son, who hugged him tighter than such a small frame should have allowed, he smiled. Teenagers were tiresome. But this little boy, who was all of James' mischievousness and Lily’s brains, brought life back to him.

Here is a just a quick one shot I did for Remus birthday. A bit belated. It’s his POV but it’s set as a what if for my fan fiction I posted a while back. What if no one died and everyone had always been happy?
