#the amount of people who genuinely don't understand that signed languages are in fact languages and not a coded form of spoken language is staggering
linguist Adam Schembri has been updating his amazing resource, What All Linguists Should Know (about sign languages). It's a really fantastic repository of info, including some really great basics that are great for students and non-linguists as well. Please share widely! I'll also copy a few links from his page, just as highlights:
What is sign language? (Schembri, 2013) https://theconversation.com/explainer-what-is-sign-language-21453
How many sign languages are there? (Glottolog) https://glottolog.org/resource/languoid/id/sign1238 (short answer: at least 220)
How are sign languages acquired? (Lillo-Martin & Henner, 2021) https://www.annualreviews.org/doi/abs/10.1146/annurev-linguistics-043020-092357
I recommend that anyone interested in or studying linguistics at any level (from hobbyist to professional!) ask themselves (and colleagues, instructors, students, etc), frequently: wait - is that true about languages in general, or just spoken languages? Have we done any research about how this works in other modalities? Keep asking the question!
nothing more heartbreaking than seeimg a gay person say something idiodic, only to find out they're pushing 30
the eternal return of "leftists are too mean to men" discourse is driving me insane. what do you MEAN there's not enough edgy leftists podcasts for men??? have these people genuinely been living under a rock for the past decade?????
"Joe Rogan but leftist" already exists!! his name is Vaush and he fucking sucks!!!!

People (sometimes rightfully) criticize negativity and hatred as foreclosing thought and the enjoyment of life but nowadays it’s much more often the case that enforced positivity and agreement foreclose thought and life. It’s so obnoxious how the second you start going into your actual thoughts about something and your belief that things can and should be different, people just start trying to stop you because it doesn’t involve immediate agreement with the way everyone lives their lives. Who fucking cares, I’m not jumping in front of them and restraining them, and I’m not gonna just yammer about myself all day. I’m already part of the world, how am I supposed to skirt around the edges of it without ever saying anything about any of it? These positivity freaks want to reduce all language to description and affirmation, they want everyone to sound like a fucking advertisement
the last surviving referent was just discovered and humanely euthanized by field semioticians in the salt flats of utah. apparently it was what people were referring to when they'd say. well. it doesn't matter now anyways does it.

a lot of behaviors that get attributed to "female socialization" can be so much more easily and accurately understood as a person recognizing the power differential surrounding them and behaving sensibly in response to that.
like. does a woman politely listen to a man monologue at her because of some experience she had when she was twelve that magically cursed her to behave that way forever, or does she do it because the man has the power to hurt her and she knows it?
does a woman do all the dishes in her household because she is less capable of breaking out of a long-ago conditioned response than, like, your average trained dog, or is she doing that because she knows that all the men in the house will blame her if she doesnt and will make life worse for her if she speaks up?
maybe a lot of sexist patterns of behavior that are widely observed in society arent caused by women like, lacking willpower or backbone? maybe it is super fucking weird for supposedly feminist movements to imply this is the case when they talk about female socialization as the end all, be all of predicting human behavior?
isnt it both more useful and more respectful toward women to consider that they are perceiving their present circumstances accurately, and recognize when power is already being wielded against them, and take logical measures to deescalate and protect themselves because it works? is it not fucking clear to everybody that trans women in particular have to do this all the fucking time?
I'll stop posting about this I swear, but this pissed me off so bad. it's basically identical to that 'cozy disco elysium' bait post but unironic
crazy how kim kitsuragi has such powerful gay swag that it makes the fan base collectively forget that one of his main character traits is being a massive centrist lol
So many Americans online don’t realize: We in Southeast Asia interact with working-class Americans far more than the rich ones. Why? Because our region is where poorer Americans actually come to work low-wage resort jobs, teach English, or retire on Social Security checks that don’t stretch at home. The ‘ugly American’ tourists? The military guys? The sexpats? Not exactly the 1% yacht crowd. But keep pretending your working class has no global footprint.
not for me!!!!!! i love being unemployed!!!!!!!
