"This is Azi Narine of the planetary freighter ship Demeter 227. I am marooned on planet Vesta. Alone. Seeking Rescue. Is there anybody out there?" . A scavenger's reign piece I've been working on for forever! I love this character and her arc with Levi. If you have the means to watch this show, please do. I think it is one my favorite pieces of adult animation. It's currently on Netflix and HBOmax!
russian speaking guy who is like "okay libs this is basic grammar: there are three genders"
I think one of my biggest contentions with the broader de fanbase (esp on tumblr), is the way people seem to think the 'point' of the story is ultimately uplifting. idk if I'm just a bitter pessimist, but to me, de is much more focused on the spectacular failure to affect change in late stage capitalism. the world of de is essentially a 1:1 mirror to our own, even the more fantastical elements like the pale are obviously meant to be analogous to the existential threat of climate change (I have way more thoughts about the pale but that's an essay I have yet to write). Harry's amnesia and subsequent rediscovery of his past is synecdochally representative of the revechol and it's past. as the player, you uncover both in tandem as you progress through the central mystery of the game. the fact that Harry's ultimate failure, his relationship to Dora, is revealed at the site of a failed revolution is very intentional; both are events everyone is desperate to forget, and yet they are inescapable, informing every aspect of the present reality. again, this is all very bleak, but honestly I think if the game had a more positive outlook I wouldn't have connected with it as much as I have. it's not particularly comforting or inspiring, but it is cathartic.
seems reasonable
Ever notice how symbols sometimes have information in them? And if you read the symbols the information goes into your mind? What's up with that?
Pisses me off how good Shakespeare actually is. Like yeah he's actually that good. People hype him up like he's the best English writer ever, and yeah he's actually an S+ tier writer.
In 1967 the government discovered that specific syllable structures combined with specific vocal tones and ultra-low-frequency sounds could speed up the process of unconscious internalization by over 1500%. This became particularly useful for teaching low-level employees large amounts of information, as "hypnophonic learning" could be done while the subject was asleep.
Hypnophone use became standard for new employees of the IRS and SEC, as it made large scale memorization of tax code and financial law significantly cheaper and easier than traditional conscious education.
However, long term use causes the subjects long term memory to atrophy, requiring nightly repetitions of hypnophone use. Some enterprising employees found that the effects could be counteracted with low dosages of LSD to preserve neuroplasticity.
Roughly 1 in 7 employees encountered a strange phenomenon: Mild financial clairvoyance.
One in roughly 50 employees experienced more significant effects, generally those ensconced in large isolated IRS warehouses, which seemed to replicate the monastic lifestyles of historical sages, depriving subjects of ordinary stimuli in favor of becoming attuned to minute changes in the sub-finantial background grid.
Once it was learned that these "enlightened" employees could predict market trends before they happened, the technology was bathed in funding, patented, and made the soul property of the IRS.
Now, these "Plutophants" are kept in nigh-perfect sensory deprivation at all times, fed a constant hypnotic fugue stream of psychic conditioning in the form of "radiosonic neuro-induction" which contains a special form of the United States Tax Code modified for recursive hypnophonic induction, as well as a ticker tape wired directly into the users spine.
The effects achieved are nothing short of stunning. The invisible hand is no longer invisible to us. The market can be fine tuned with surgical precision. The price of bread has maintained a perfect 0.002% +/- variance for over 25 years now, and those who attempt to disrupt the guidelines are regulated by the SECs crack psychonautics division, who are now able to hunt market manipulation via their disruption in the financial dreamscape.
Very rarely, a Plutophant can become so attuned to the guidelines that they achieve a sort of catastrophic neuro-depatterning, their synapses begin to produce a counter-signal to the neuro-induction frequencies; jamming, and eventually overpowering the machine. Study is still ongoing, but it is believed that they somehow perpetuate their own neurological fingerprint into the financial causal background grid itself, literally becoming "one with the market."
Study is ongoing.
Straight cultureās orientation toward heteroromantic sacrifice is also influenced by socioeconomic class. Respect for sacrificeāor sucking it up and surviving lifeās miseriesāis one of the hallmarks of white working-class culture, for instance, wherein striving for personal happiness carries less value than does adherence to familial norms and traditions. Maturity and respectability are measured by what one has given up in order to keep the family system going, an ethos that is challenged by the presence of a queer child, for instance, who insists on ābeing who they are.ā Queernessāto the extent that it emphasizes authenticity in oneās sexual relationships and fulfillment of personal desiresāis an affront to the celebration of heteroromantic hardship. As Robin Podolsky has noted, āWhat links homophobia and heterosexism to the reification of sacrificeĀ .Ā .Ā . is the specter of regret. Queers are hated and envied because we are suspected of having gotten away with something, of not anteing up to our share of the misery that every other decent adult has surrendered to.ā
For many lesbian daughters of working-class straight women, opting out of heterosexuality exposes the possibility of another life path, begging the question for mothers, āIf my daughter didnāt have to do this, did I?ā Heterosexuality is compulsory for middle-class women, too, but more likely to be represented as a gift, a promise of happiness, to be contrasted with the ostensibly āmiserableā life of the lesbian. The lesbian feminist theorist Sara Ahmed has offered a sustained critique of the role of queer abjection in the production of heteroromantic fantasies. In Living a Feminist Life, she notes that āit is as if queers, by doing what they want, expose the unhappiness of having to sacrifice personal desiresĀ .Ā .Ā . for the happiness of others.ā In The Promise of Happiness, Ahmed argues, āHeterosexual love becomes about the possibility of a happy ending; about what life is aimed toward, as being what gives life direction or purpose, or as what drives a story.ā Marked by sacrifice, misery, and failure along the way, the journey toward heterosexual happiness (to be found with the elusive āgood manā) remains the journey.
