Whump Tropes: Gasping

(Tw: choking, drowning, death, knives, abuse)

Whumpee gripping uselessly at fingers around their throat, clawing as they choke and gasp for air. Their world slowly turning sideways and fading to black.

Caretaker cradling a coughing, gasping Whumpee as blood fills their lungs. Just watching them turn blue and not able to do anything to stop it. They just whisper over and over: “You’re going to be okay. You’re going to be fine.” Neither one of them believes it.

A Whumpee yanked out of the water by their hair, choking on the air, clawing at the side of the tub. Desperate to get in more than a few lungfuls this time before they are thrust under again.

Whumpee taking in sharp spikes of air, no longer able to stay silent and stoic as the whip cracks down over and over again on mutilated flesh.

Whumper relishing the little gasps, squeals, and shivers that the lightest touches create. Trailing their fingers anywhere they can reach and occasionally digging into freshly healing wounds to hear Whumpee’s sweet little sounds.

Whumpee gritting their teeth as they clean and stitch up their own wound. Clumsy, shaking fingers digging into sensitive skin, but at least Whumper is gone and they can make as much noise as they want. Air hisses through clenched teeth as they dab at the wound, wondering if they really have the stomach to stitch it themselves.

Caretaker too shocked to suppress a gasp when Whumpee disrobes. For the first time, they see just how many scars and bruises are sunken into Whumpee’s flesh.

A terrified Whumpee’s little gasp as they feel the cold sharpness of a knife pressed against their throat. They try not to squirm around it as Whumper grins at their adorable response.

“Relax…” in Whump

“Relax…” Whumper croons into the softness of Whumpee's hair, holding them close against their chest as they struggle. Their body bucks, limbs fail; All of that writhing weakened by the drugs coursing through their system and reduced to pathetic wriggling and mewling. Whumper catches one of their hands easily by the wrist, pulling it up to their lips. “Just let it happen…” They murmur between gentle kisses.

“Relax…” Caretaker's deft hands knead at the stiff muscles in Whumpee’s shoulders, bunched up and pulled taut like a cord. They make sure to avoid the fresh stitches along their back, the bruises standing out starkly against their skin. They do it for themself as much as for Whumpee. They don't like to think about what they had to go through at the hands of that monster... all alone... when it had been their job to protect them. Caretaker takes in a deep, shuddering breath, forcing themself to push those thoughts away. There is no fixing the past. “You’re safe now— Safe for forever, Whumpee. You can relax now. They can’t get you…” Caretaker leans forward to look earnestly into their eyes. “Not anymore.”

“Relax…” Whumpee whispers breathlessly, frantic huffs of air echoing off the barrel of the gun, mere inches from their face. Whumper's gaze is dark and intense as if they're just waiting for Whumpee to slip up... to say the wrong thing. They keep their hands raised in the air, trembling faintly. "Relax, I-I won't run, okay? Seriously, I swear I won't."

"Relax..." That achingly familiar voice sends chills riveting up Whumper's spine. Leather straps hold them firmly in place as they thrash with renewed vigor... They can't see Whumpee... but they can certainly feel them lurking somewhere behind the chair in those thick, churning shadows. Whumper can feel the hatred. Years of festering resentment spilling out across the floor, all too consuming and just as suffocating as the dust and mildew. "Isn't that what you used to say to me... 'Relax and enjoy the show'...?"

"Please, I'm really sorry," Whumpee droned, staring at the floor. "I won't do it again."

Whumper hummed and nodded. "And now the honest version?"

Whumpee glared up, making direct eye contact, "Fuck you and everything you stand for."

Whumper grinned and pulled out a whip.

"See, I like it so much better when you're honest."

Whump Prompts: Found You

I just saw a fantastic post by @whumpingcrow and it got me thinking about when an *almost* recovered, escaped whumpee is found by whumper again. So here's a list of ways for Whumper to say 'found you'.

Whumpee walks into their home, takes off their shoes, hangs up the keys, and goes to flop on the couch. But they see someone is already there. Whumper gives them a big smile, “I was wondering when you’d be back. Let’s go, I already packed up your things.”

Whumpee getting a text from an unknown number: “Tag! You’re it.”

Whumpee picking up their office phone at work and freezing when they hear Whumper’s voice. “Ah, there’s that lovely voice. No, don’t you dare hang up on me. We have some things to discuss.”

Whumpee working tech support and getting randomly connected to Whumper. Freezing up as they recognize their voice, trying to change their own. Not knowing if Whumper knows it’s them and trying to find a way to end the conversation as quickly as possible. Then they hear, “You know, I don’t think I’m going to be able to get this on my own. Maybe I should give you my address and you can come help me. Better yet, give me yours and I’ll come get you.”

Whumper getting a letter and opening it at the mailbox. “I didn’t think I’d find you in a real house, especially not one with such a well-stocked fridge. Congratulations. Really, you’ve outdone yourself. I’m so proud.”

A note on their desk at work in all too-familiar handwriting: “See you soon! <3”

Whumpee coming home to find a bouquet of their favorite flowers on their table. Flowers only Whumper ever got for them.

Getting random text that says, “I can’t say I like the new name. It doesn’t suit you. However, I AM a huge fan of your outfit today. You know red’s my favorite color on you.”

Whumpee having coffee alone at a busy cafe when Whumper slides into the seat across from them. “It’s been so long! You’re looking great.” Whumpee can’t manage to do anything but stare as they hands start shaking.

An exhausted Whumpee driving home from work. They flinch and swerve as they feel a knife at their throat. “Take a deeeeep breath. Just keep driving and do what I say, and you’ll be fine.”

Whumpee just walking down the sidewalk as an arm tugs around their waist. They look up to see Whumper pressed close. They try to stop walking, but Whumper tugs at their hip and they are too afraid to pull away. “Don’t fight me. Just keep walking and this will turn out much better for you.”

Whumpee waking up in the middle of the night to Whumper standing over them. This still happens several times a week, but it’s always just a dream. They take a deep breath, blink hard, and flip on their lamp, trying to make the image fade, but it’s real this time. “You look surprised to see me. Didn’t I tell you I’d always find you? Now get dressed. We’re leaving.”

Whumpee answers to door and freezes when they see Whumper’s smile. “I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d stop by. Aren’t you going to invite me in?”

Whumpee sees Whumper leaning against their car when they get to it in the parking garage. “Shhh shhh. Don’t talk. Don’t move. Don’t scream. I’m already very angry with you. You don’t want to make it worse, do you?” Whumpee just shakes their head in small jerky motions.

Whumpee taking out the trash to the dumpster in the alley after work. Whumper appearing out of nowhere and backing them into a corner. “You can walk to my car and get in the trunk, or I’ll use this and carry you. Your choice.”

I love it when a whumpee is so weak that they:

are bedridden, much to their discomfort. They long to leave the bed, but cannot because they are too weak, and their legs shake at the thought of taking even a single step.

can't keep their eyes open. Their eyelids flutter but due to tiredness and too much light, they always close again. However, the whumpee has learned to rely on other senses, and is able to recognize the caretaker's voice or touch among a thousand others.

have to always lie down. They try to sit up, perhaps to eat something, but after a few minutes their head starts spinning and their body starts screaming because of the effort. Much to their chagrin, they have to force themselves back down or else they will likely pass out.

are not hungry. Their body can't handle even plain broth, making them queasy and dizzy. So they continue to refuse food, their only source of livelihood, and this obviously worsens their condition.

are too sensitive to touch. Their skin that seems to boil with fever, the bedsheets that rub down their limbs like sandpaper, the hair that sticks to their sweaty forehead, even the simple touch of the caretaker, a touch that is supposed to comfort them. They start to hate all these little things.
