What if when Ace left the crew he gave Sanji some beads from his necklace, as a promise that someday they will meet again. Sanji keeps them in his pocket, sometimes rolling them around in his palm late at night when he is feeling especially lonely. On Kamabakka Sanji makes them into earrings, with the help of the queens. It gives him one less thing to miss. That is, until Ace dies. When Sanji read that newspaper it felt like the beads were burning holes into his ears. He ripped them out, and considered throwing them into the ocean until he thought of Luffy, his captain, Ace’s beloved little brother. Ace would want Luffy to have them, as a token to remember him by. Luffy deserved to have them, after all he has been through. So Sanji locked away the earrings, determined not to let his own selfishness ruin the plan he had made. One night, as the crew were sailing away from Fishman Island, Sanji asked Luffy to stay for a while after dinner. With his head hung low in shame, he pressed the earrings into Luffy’s hands. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, unable to meet his captain’s eyes. Instead, his eyes landed on the x shaped scar on Luffy’s chest. “I can take them apart, if you’d like. Make them into something different.” Sanji forced the words out of his throat, and the room was once again swallowed by a heavy silence. Suddenly Sanji was being crushed in a rubbery embrace. He could feel a wet patch forming where Luffy rested his head against Sanji’s chest. “Thank you,” Luffy whispered into the fabric of Sanji’s suit. Then, slowly, gently, carefully, Luffy placed the earrings in one of the cook’s soft palms. “But these aren’t meant for me. He gave them to Sanji, so Sanji should keep them.”
And that night, for the first time, Sanji allowed himself to mourn the death of his lover.
