you! random leftist! can you spread awareness about oppression being enacted by non-white/non-western people without either getting wildly bigoted, trying to force the situation to be a carbon copy of American racial dynamics, or just ignoring the whole thing entirely?

I would like to see more people talk about how jobs treat disabled employees.

I used to prep, wash dishes, and cook at mellow mushroom. I had chronic pain that wasn't NEARLY as bad as it is today, but it was still very debilitating. I told my employer "i cannot stand more than 4 to 6 hours. I CANNOT do shifts longer than this due to my illness." And even though i made my boundaries VERY clear, everyday i worked it was 8 hours at the least and 10 or 12 at the most. I would go up to my manager and say "look i really need to leave, my shift is over, my chronic pain is killing me." And he'd say "we really need to here, you HAVE to push through." And so i did, and after one, ONE month of that job my crps got incredibly worse to the point where i could no longer walk my dog around the block which was .5 miles. I quit, and that was FOUR years ago, and ever since that day I HAVE BEEN BEDRIDDEN AND HAVE TO USE A WHEELCHAIR. It is my biggest regret in life.

My best friend who has seen my whole journey has recently developed undiagnosed chronic pain, and she is in the EXACT same scenario i was 4 years ago. Busting her ass at a pizza place with extreme pain that hurts her so much she tells me "im in so much pain i don't even feel like a person." She doesn't feel LUCID. And her manager and coworkers are saying the same thing "if you don't help us you will let us down, we'll be in the shit."

That job thats hurting you isn't fucking worth it. I promise you no money is worth losing all your physical abilities and never getting them back. Your coworkers and boss do not give a shit about you, so don't you dare suffer for them. They will never understand your struggle and they will never try. They truly think being understaffed is worse than whatever pain you experience. They would rather you permanently damage yourself than inconvenience them. FUCK THEM. DON'T FUCKING DO IT!

there's no shame in continuing to live with your parents as an adult, but it does have an undeniable poisoning effect on your brain that you can't start healing until you live somewhere else

the biggest tip i can say about trans inclusive language when discussing anatomy is to just say what you mean without trying to find a euphemism, and to be specific to the conversation that you're having. if you're having a conversation about childbirth, say "people who can give birth". not everyone who can give birth is a woman and not every woman can give birth (both trans and cis), so don't say "women" or "mothers" or "females", you don't even have to say like "womb haver" or whatever. "person who can give birth" is specific and clear if you're talking about childbirth.

if you're talking about penis and testes, just say that. "men" in that context is cis-centric. "amab genitals" means nothing, since trans women can have bottom surgery, and intersex people exist in all kinds of physical expressions of sex.

avoid sexualized terms like tits/boobs (use breasts) or dick, balls, etc. those terms take on a context that can make folks feel uncomfortable about their anatomy due to the sexual context. I feel uncomfortable when people try to be inclusive and say shit like "pussy haver" but if I'm reading a medical article about vaginas I'd much rather it be addressed to "people with vaginas" rather than "women"

the more we separate language of body parts from gender identities and actually start speaking frankly and respectfully about anatomy without acting like its some taboo, the better it will be for trans and intersex people. it can help cis people too. you can be a cis woman who doesn't have a womb, you can be a cis man who doesn't have penis or testes. imo this kind of language is inclusive not only for gender non-conforming people but everyone with a physical difference in their sex characteristics, due either to genetics or a lived experience!

I've been using reddit more and my fucking god the programming subreddits are horrifically racist. when asked why the cs industry is so bad right now they all turn to blaming indian people for "stealing" tech jobs. I want to know how these white guys making $150k a year in their cushy remote jobs with flexible hours would feel if they had to work 14 hours a day until midnight so they don't inconvenience their usamerican coworkers by making them wake up earlier, all for worse positions and shit wages too.

and like yes, many tech jobs have been offshored to india, but that's not the fault of the people who live there, it's the fault of corporations who want to cut costs across the board by exploiting a larger labor pool in a country where they don't have to pay nearly as much per employee. the benefits are twofold, as after they've offshored these jobs to india, they can drive down wages in the us too, knowing that they've created a smaller, more competitive market that leads to people so desperate for work that they'll take any tech job, no matter how little it pays.

you have an enemy, and it's not the people that are now getting these jobs; they're just trying to make ends meet and live their lives, and they'll take whatever opportunities they can get in order to do so. you have more in common with them than you'll ever have with your boss, who benefits greatly from turning you against each other. imagine what we could do if we united against them instead.

can we talk about how literally 64% of people wear glasses, and yet we NEVER see them in movies/tv unless it's on some nerdy or uncool character? why do we adhere to such a weird beauty standard that subconsciously makes us feel bad for,, not being able to see???

Anyway, people with brain damage I love you. People who have had strokes I love you, especially if you're told you were "too young" to have one. People who acquired your brain damage by less common means such as infection, lack of oxygen at birth or degenerative disease, I love you. People with moderate and severe brain damage, I love you. People who lost their sight or hearing or ability to speak because of their brain damage, I love you. People who have paralysis from their brain damage, I love you. People with amnesia and severe cognitive issues from their brain damage, I love you. People with rare and unusual symptoms from their brain damage, I love you.

You are not a punchline, you haven't lost your humanity, your thoughts and opinions are as valuable as anyone else's. We deserve respect.

Anyway, People With Brain Damage I Love You. People Who Have Had Strokes I Love You, Especially If You're

Whats Inspiration Porn and how do i avoid it?

I remember a few years ago i went to a pro choice rally, i was the only one in a wheelchair, many strangers came up to me telling me how strong i was, how i was a representation of how no one had an "excuse" not to be here, and they took photos with me to post online and gush about how much of an inspiration i was. This event made me weirdly uncomfortable and i couldn't figure out why for a long time. I felt dehumanized, like to them i was an object, a trophy, a representation of their ablist views. Then i learned about inspiration porn an realized what happened to me.

Inspiration porn is when someone, usually an abled person, objectivities a disabled person. Putting all of their achievements on a pedestal to motivate other people. In that moment we are not treated like people, to them we are just an excuse to tell others they aren't doing enough.

It has a tone of "the disabled person can do it, so why can't you?" Which is frankly an ablist mindset.

By making our lives about YOU you are putting down all other disabled people for not doing the same.

I hear the phrase "no excuses" a lot regarding inspiration porn, implying those who cannot achieve these high standards are experiencing a moral failing. And its not just putting down other disabled people, but also abled people who simply don't have the means to do what the inspiration porn expects of them. It's saying "if you cant do what this disabled person did then you are lazy and a worse person." Which is just ablist as fuck.

Some characteristics of inspiration porn online:

Using photos, videos, or stories of disabled people WITHOUT THE DISABLED PERSONS PERMISSION. Do you know how icky it feels to achieve an accomplishment as a disabled person and then run across photos of you online filled with comments treating you like a prized show dog? Its gross.

Lots of phrases like "this is the definition of "no excuses"." And "they have my respect for doing this DESPITE their weakness/disability" (im literally writing this post because i JUST saw someone literally say "weakness" this way.) And "not disabled! Differently abled!"

We are not stories and characters, we are real people with lives just like you. We are not trophies, or an inspiration, we are just regular ass people. If you see something like this online know that the disabled community doesn't respect them at all. Don't do this.
