“Please.”

“Please.”

The hero barely heard the whispered word. Their head was throbbing, the world around them swimming in and out of focus and there was so much blood so much blood so much blood everywhere and agony ripping through their chest—

“You have to live. You have to, you have to, you have to, please.”

The hero was hallucinating, they had to be, because those were the villain’s eyes looking down at them, that was the villain’s voice, filled with pain and panic and something else the hero couldn’t name. The hero blinked and they were lost again, gone in a haze of blood and darkness, spinning away into nothingness…

“No!” the villain cried out, desperation creeping into their voice as they pressed their hands tighter to the hero’s side, a hopeless attempt to stop the bleeding. “You can’t die,” the villain whispered, voice hoarse and cracking, chest heaving with silent, broken sobs. “I’ll do anything you want, be anything you want, I promise. Just live.”

The hero fought to hold on to the words, to open their eyes to see something, to open their mouth to say something but they were slipping away, falling

that some people respond to any well-foreshadowed reveal with “ugh that plot twist was so predictable” proves bad faith criticism has rotted their brains to the point they think it’s bad writing if they can correctly identify information the writers were intentionally giving them

A one-winged angel must team up with a ragtag band of demons to escape from Hell. Haloes and harps must go on the backburner if it means clawing his way out of the fire, and if the world burns to ashes in his wake, so be it. The Shards of Childhood

Donate to Fundraiser to help Ghada's children from Gaza, organized by Lucrezia Fontana
gofundme.com
Hello, I'm Lucrezia. I created this fundraiser in hopes of helping a fr… Lucrezia Fontana needs your support for Fundraiser to help Ghada's

The city I knew, the one my children chased pigeons in and learned to ride bikes on, is gone. War, a cruel sculptor, has reshaped its once vibrant streets into a desolate landscape of twisted metal and shattered dreams.exclamation Buildings that held laughter and the scent of baking bread now stand as hollow shells, their windows vacant eyes staring back at a ravaged sky. Memories, too, lie fractured beneath the rubble. Gone are the echoes of children's games played in sun-dappled courtyards, replaced by the relentless thud of shelling. The familiar scent of jasmine, once a signature note in the summer air, is now tainted by the acrid tang of destruction. Each corner used to hold a story - the bakery where my daughter devoured warm croissants, the park bench where my son scraped his knee for the first time. Now, these fragments of our lives exist only in the fragile museum of my mind, a place where the war cannot reach, but still manages to cast a long shadow. Yet, amidst the wreckage, a flicker of hope remains. Like fragile wildflowers pushing through cracked concrete, the resilience of the human spirit endures. We, the survivors, carry the weight of this loss, but also the fierce love for our children and the yearning to rebuild. We will gather the shards of our memories, piece by broken piece, and weave them into a tapestry of a new future, one where laughter finds its voice again and our children can dream safe dreams, free from the haunting echoes of war

How to Describe Clothing in Writing

Portrait of Mrs. Howe (detail)
Alfred Stevens
1900

Creating vivid descriptions for a story or character is a mark of a great writer. One specific form of descriptive writing that particularly affects setting and characterization is the portrayal of characters’ clothing.

Writing Tips: Describing Clothes

Clothing descriptions work best when they appear organically in the course of the narrative. The story should never halt in place so that you can shoehorn in a bunch of sartorial descriptions. Here are some writing tips to help you use clothing descriptions in your creative writing:

Integrate clothing into your initial character description. The first time readers meet a character, they should get a sense of how they dress.

Study articles of clothing to make sure you know what they look like. This will help you choose the right words to describe them. For example, it would be appropriate to describe a chiffon dress as “sheer” or “thin,” but it would be clumsy to describe it as “threadbare” because chiffon is not cheap.

Pick outfits that fit the setting you’re writing about. If you’re describing an elegant ball, you might want to place a character in a form-fitting strapless evening gown, as this is a common piece for formal dances. Describing the clothing reinforces the setting you’ve chosen.

Blend clothing into job descriptions. If you’re describing a monk at work, you could note how the loose-fitting sleeves of his frock draped onto a table. If you’re describing a superhero in an action scene, describe the flow of their cape or the stiffness of their boots.

Let your characters change outfits. Show a character arc by marking how a character’s clothing changes over the course of your story. If a character in a YA novel starts out wearing ill-fitting khaki slacks with enormous pleats and ends that same novel wearing a denim jacket with an “anarchy” pin on the lapel, we know they’ve undergone some major changes.

Use clothing to set characters apart. Represent the difference between two characters by describing the differences in their clothing. Let’s say you’re describing two characters interviewing for the same job: One wears a sporty, ruched, A-line dress, and the other wears jeans and a sweatshirt. The reader can infer aspects of both characters’ personalities and make a comparison between two characters.

Reasons to Describe a Character’s Clothing

A character’s clothing is a window into so many aspects of their lives. From a character’s clothes, readers can make inferences about the following:

Clothing reveals a character’s personality. A knee-length fur coat and a corduroy jacket are both forms of outerwear, but it’s quite unlikely they’d be worn by the same kind of person. Readers can deduce a character’s style and personality from the clothes they wear.

Clothing implies a character’s wealth. Is your novel’s main character comes from a working-class background, it’s more likely they’d wear a t-shirt and jeans than a lavish and expensive piece of clothing. Just as in real life, clothing indicates status and wealth.

Clothing shows a character’s point of view toward the world. Clothing can reveal a character’s views on the world. If someone puts on a graphic t-shirt with the sleeves cut off, it implies that they could hardly care less about offending other people. Meanwhile, a character who wears a dressy button-down shirt with a single-breasted plaid jacket seems like the old-fashioned type. Maybe they’re heading to a mixer at the country club?

Clothing suggests the time and place in which a character exists. As part of your worldbuilding process, you’ll want to be as precise as possible about your book’s setting and time period. This doesn’t just apply to historical fiction; it applies to all forms of writing. For instance, if you’re writing a battle scene set during the Revolutionary War, you might need to study the physical descriptions of britches and pantaloons. But if your scene is set in a present-day battlefield, you might describe a soldier as wearing camouflage with a tag hung from a necklace. Simply by changing the clothing description, you’ve marked a massive distinction between these two war stories.

FIRE

FIRE

"Someone! Please help!"

"Fire! Fire!"

"Call the firemen!"

"Aahhh!"

Fire.

Everywhere.

Screams and shrieks could be heard from miles away. They tried to extinguish the fire but there was no avail. In a few hours, everything gradually quiet down.

Not because they were saved but because they died.

Not even a single soul breathed after.

Left the world with unfinished business.

*

"Johnny!", Mark yelled from the opposite end of the hallway and ran towards his friend.

"Why didn't you wait for me?", he frowned.

Johnny gave him an annoyed look,

"I didn't wait for you? Man! I waited for you for freaking 30 minutes!", Johnny yelled. "And Rose even passed by. She offered to walk with me to the bus stop but I declined because I want to wait for you!"

"Oh... Sorry", Mark clasped his hands together while grinning.

"Erghh! I should have followed Rose!", Johnny exclaimed as he walked out of the door.

*

"Hey... Why haven't we reach the bus stop yet?", Mark asked Johnny. He shrugged.

"It's like we are walking in circles", Johnny replied with a frown.

"It's foggy too but it feels hot. Don't you think, Johnny?", Mark gave Johnny a worried look.

"And I should have followed Rose", Johnny glared at Mark and walked faster.

"Hey! Wait up!", Mark chased after Johnny.

*

"It's so hot.. I'm burning right now", Mark complained as he wiped his sweat. "Look my hair is ruined", he whined, pointing his wet hair to Johnny.

"Huh? You think I'm not hot? I waited for you for 30 minutes. Freaking half an hour! And here I am hearing you complaining about your damn hair!", Johnny yelled at Mark's face.

He was about to continue when Mark cut him off.

"I should have followed Rose", he said mockingly. "Go on! Leave me alone!", Mark yelled, turning to the opposite direction. "I'll find my way to that damn bus stop alone."

*

"How could he say that to me. I stayed up late last night to prepare his birthday card", Mark mumbled to himself.

"And why am I walking in circles? The fog is getting thicker it's getting hotter and I can't see a damn thing!", Mark stomped his feet and throw his bag to the ground. He sat down but immediately got up because the ground was hot.

"What the hell?!", he yelled.

Suddenly he heard distinct yelling.

"Help!"

"Help!""Fire!""Somebody help!"

Mark was horrified.

"What? Where's the fire?", he looked around.

Then, he saw a glint of light.

Suddenly, fire came towards him.

Mark ran as fast as he could but he realized that the fire had surrounded him. He coughed as he had swallowed so much smoke.

"If there's fire. Where's Johnny? Where's my other friends? Where's my family?",

Out of nowhere, Johnny came out of the blazing fire, unharmed.

"Jo-Johnny? How come you're fine? There's fire. You came out of the fire", Mark pointed at Johnny, confused. He looked around and rubbed his eyes.

There's still fire. He even pinched himself.

"This is not a dream. How come you're fine?", Mark frowned. Soot covered his face and he coughed.

"I'm not fine, Mark", Johnny said sadly. Suddenly, he melted.

His clothes burned. His eyes flowed out of its socket. He turned into a skeleton.

"I'm dead, Mark. So are you", the skeleton said and melted.

"What?! No...no...no.. This is not happening. I can't be dead!", Marked screamed, holding his head. He crouched down. It's hot but he didn't care. Then, he remembered.

*

"Huh? It's 2 in the morning already?", Mark said as he glanced at his watch. "Hmmm... never mind. I'm done with Johnny's birthday card. I hope he likes it", he smiled to himself.

"Hey... Why do I smell smoke?", he sniffed around. To his horrors, he saw a wood caught on fire fell down from above.

"Fi... Fire!", he screamed and ran outside his room.

"Mom! Dad! You there?!", he screamed for his parents but there was no response. He panicked and ran outside. Luckily, the front door of his house hasn't caught fire yet. He ran to the corridor and saw a swaying Johnny.

"Johnny! Johnny!", Mark ran to him and held him by the shoulder. "We're going to be fine", Mark assured Johnny although the both of them were already coughing badly.

"Mark, we're going to die", Johnny said weakly.

"No! We're going to survive!", Mark pulled Johnny up on his feet.

However, fate was cruel. A big ply of wood fell on top of them. The wood was to heavy on their weak bodies, they couldn't move. Johnny had embraced his sad fate but Mark kept chanting that they will survive.

"We'll survive. I'm sure the firemen will be here soon. They'll save us", Mark said.

"Just accept it, Mark", Johnny replied weakly.

"No, we're still young! We can't die! Don't worry, after this ends. You'll court Rose and I'll help Ten to get Lisa. We just need to wait for them to save us",  he convinced Johnny.

But Johnny just sighed and closed his eyes.

"Hey, Johnny! Wake up! Wake up!", Mark slapped his friend so he could stay conscious but there was no avail, Johnny was dead.

As for Mark, he struggled to stay awake and kept on chanting he'll survive until his last breath.

*

"Oh my God! I'm dead", Mark whispered to himself and looked blankly at his surrounding. Fire.

Just fire.

*

"Sh**! The car broke down!", Doyoung exclaimed.

"I think we should go out and find some help", Jaehyun suggested.

"But this is no where!", Doyoung protested.

"It's worth a try", Jaehyun smiled.

Doyoung sighed but followed him anyway. After a few minutes of walking, they saw an old building. Before the both of them could say anything, someone greeted them.

"Hey, need some help?"

They turned around.

"I'm Mark", the guy introduced himself.

"And this is Johnny", he pointed at the tall guy beside him.
