Orbea variegata
This plant is one of the many stapeliads found in South Africa, long placed in the Milkweed Family (Asclepiadaceae), but now transferred into an expanded concept of the Dogbane Family (Apocynaceae). These two families were clearly closely related, but it is still something of a shock to have the entire milkweed family swallowed up by its neighbor. In any case, the stapeliads are a notable group of succulent-stemmed plants within the family, with remarkable starfish-like flowers. Orbea variegata is fairly common in coastal areas of South Africa’s Western Cape Province, near to Cape Town. This is the second form of it that has come into flower this year at the Ruth Bancroft Garden, and its flowers certainly are attention-getting.
