Miguel Carbonell Selva (1854-1896) - Death of Sappho, 1881
Please note that none of these are simple "Satanism 101" titles. I don't really believe there is such a thing, at least not for me. However there is a good reason for each one being on the list, which I will explain. There also won't be any magic or witchcraft recommendations on this list, because while magic is absolutely compatible with Satanism, Satanism is a religion and witchcraft is a practice. I may update this list periodically, so if you reblog or save this post, check back in on it once in a while.
Paradise Lost by John Milton. I'd argue this text is one of the closest things Satanism has to "scripture," if there is a Satanic canon then Milton is absolutely a part of it. It can be a bit of a tricky read but it's a beautiful poem loaded with imagery and metaphor to feed the soul. If the style is a struggle for you to read, I'd recommend listening to an audio version, it's very beautiful when read aloud.
Revelations from the Christian Bible. Yes, I'm serious. If you, as a Satanist, are going to read any part of the Bible, make it Revelations. It's poetic and esoteric and full of references to Satan and the demonic.
Inferno by Dante Alighieri. The one might surprise some people, as Satan absolutely isn't depicted in a flattering light in it. However, Inferno has had a surprising amount of influence on the Christian understanding of Hell and the demonic, which is part of why I feel it is valuable, as Satanism is derived from Christianity. Many stereotypes about what one may expect when one gets to hell comes from this book. Furthermore, it's just a fun read.
Origins of Satan by Elaine Pagels. This one is a historical study of Satan as a religious figure, and I think it ought to be required reading for anyone getting into Satanism. Satan isn't just a vague or meaningless deity, he has been weaponized by Christianity throughout the centuries to target very specific groups of people for specific reasons. If you are to take on the mantle of Satanist, I recommend understanding what sort of legacy you're associating yourself with. You are becoming an adversary to God - but what, to the Christian eye, makes one an enemy?
🗻🌊Skye’s Landlocked Sea Witch Tips🌊🗻
I’ve seen a lot of aspiring sea witches being discouraged due to not living anywhere near the ocean. And I’m here to tell you that you can still be a sea witch and be landlocked! Being landlocked will only hinder you if you let it.
So, let’s get going!
🌊Making Your Own Sea Water🌊
🌊A jar/air tight bottle. I find a swing cap bottle works best
🌊Sea salt, eyeball amount depending on jar size
🌊Warm spring water
Ground and centre. Listen to ocean sounds and visualise and feel the power of the sea. Connect with the ocean by doing a Sinking/sea centering.
Pour the water into the jar. Add the sea salt. Mix until the salt has dissolved.
Hold the jar in both hands in front of your heart, saying:
“🐚 Mother ocean, from whom life flows, Bless this water with your love and nurturing power, your endless beauty and strength, For this I am grateful. So mote it be 🐚”
(Feel free to replace mother ocean with the name of your sea deity, if you have one)
Close your eyes. Continue to hold the jar at your heart and visualise the ocean. With your hands, feel the sea’s energy emanating from the jar. When the feeling is strong, open your eyes. Your sea water is ready to use.
🌊🔊Sea Sound Scapes🔊🌊
Your sea water can be placed in a bowl and you have the ocean right there. Combine that with the sound scape, listening to the waves coming in and going out. Synch that with any spell work you want to do regarding waves, tides, giving things to mother ocean etc. With me, I place things in the bowl and then pour the water and item (if it’s eco friendly) in the stream near my house.
I also use this technique to place myself at the beach through the senses. Hold a seashell or touch some sand, taste some salt, listen to ocean sounds, have an image or video of the sea, and if you can (I struggle with this) have a scent that’s ocean themed. I’ve struggled to find one as most scented candles labelled sea breeze smell like soap… And with this, you can perform rituals and workings centered around that water you made. Through your visualisation skills you can be by the sea, even when you physically aren’t. Cool, huh?!
💙You Are Ocean💙
The ocean is within you. It’s your blood, the sweat, your tears, your breath, your pulse. The ocean has a rhythm, so does the human body. We’re 65% water. And what’s even cooler is we also have a tide. The moon affects the body’s fluids, just like it affects the ocean. These ideas have really helped me with my craft because being landlocked, I’m sometimes like “how can I connect with the sea?” So knowing I have a tide and the rhythm of the sea, which is like the rhythm of pulse, just totally blows my mind and amazes me!
💧💦Inland Water💦💧
Now this is something that kinda quenches my sea thirst. If you can, travel to a nearby lake, river, stream etc. Sit near it. Connect with it. Follow your intuition and connect with its energy. Ask Mother Ocean/Your water deity to help you.
Honestly, I’ve been in meditation near freshwater and the smell, if I focus enough, reminds me of the sea air and it literally transports me in my mind and senses to the beach. And that’s one of my vital tools in my craft. (talk about water being adaptable and water witches doing the same, eh?!)
🛀🚿Bath & Shower Magic🚿🛀
🌊Bath bombs. Look up their ingredients to know the correspondences, or, just make up your own. Lush are honestly amazing and their products have been used a lot in my bath rituals
🌊Sallllttssss! You can make a saltwater bath, meditate and relax and really tap into that ocean energy
🌊Bath tub altar. Have a little altar going on when you take a bath. Shells, candles, incense, trinkets you’ve collected or purchased, statues. Anything you have that makes you feel connected with the sea
🌊 You can use crystals that correspond to water if you like. Aquamarine, moonstone, fluorite, amethyst, labradorite, selenite and rose quartz are just a few examples. If you’re putting crystals in your tub please research which ones are water safe!
🌊Herbs and oils. You can add these to your bathtub. Please research again. Some herbs are toxic and some you may be allergic to. The same with oils, as some people have allergic reactions to them! I don’t often use herbs and oils for this reason. I get irritated skin very easily. I use coconut oil in my bath for purification and I just looooove coconut oil and the scent. Also its amazing for your skin! I use lavender oil and that’s literally it. I use oils outside of the tub, though. For candle dressing and other spell work.
🌊And if you don’t have a bathtub, all of those above ingredients and can be made into shower scrubs! They’re super easy to make and there’s a tonne of amazing tutorials around online!
🌊Meditate or work in the shower. Feel that water flowing down and through you, allow it to cleanse and charge you. Go with your intuition and explore the possibilities
🌩🌪️☄️Weather☄️🌪️🌩️
Weather. It all begins at sea. Snow, rain, thunder storms, winds, hail. Its all from the sea. The water is ocean water that’s traveled to the land. Weather magic is just a more expanded form of sea magic. Go out and let the rain cleanse you, collect weather water of any kind and make your sea water with it! Feel the power of a storm and focus on how much energy the sea has during that time. Feel her with you when you are on land! Remember to stay safe when practising weather magic, too.
🐚✨Seashell Magic✨🐚
And if you have seashells, they have amazing uses and correspondences. Offering bowls, amulets, charms, talismans, runes, charging items and so on. I highly recommend the book Sea Magic by Sandra Kynes as a lot of the tips I’ve given you were inspired or taken from that book :)
A quick PSA regarding seashells:
If your shells are store bought, they may not be ethically sourced. Some craft stores sell them by the many so try to be wary of this. It’s down to your moral compass whether or not you decide to use them in your craft. And if you do choose to use them, I advise cleansing them before any magical use. Furthermore, do not purchase nautilus shells, starfish or seahorses. Nautilus shells are endangered. Star fish and sea horses are taken alive, then killed to be sold in stores.
I really hope this helped! Have a swishy day! 🌊💙And if you have any questions, feel free to ask :)

Deciding what you believe is always a big step in life, especially if you decide to take the leap to work on the left-hand path, but things can still be hard. I see people decide they want to tread the path, but get stuck on what to do next.
It's something I hear all the time. So when you know what you want to do, but not where to start or even how to start, where can you go for information?
So you know what you want to do and who you want to work with (hopefully, but if you don't maybe take that step first), so what next?
1. Research. Do you know everything you feel like you should know about who or what you want to know about? No? Well when you can't always rely on someone to answer a quick ask or message, you have to turn to research. Do a quick google search! Look through free online libraries! Search "(book title) google drive" and see what happens! Even if you don't find what you needed, you'll know more than you did.
So now you know what you need to know, but you don't know where to go from there?
2. Find the way you want to practice. Do you want to be theistic? Atheistic? Agnostic? None or all of the above? Find people who believe what you do, or something close to it, and see what they do! Don't be afraid to take inspiration from people or even books or media that inspire you! Do you really connect with the prayers someone posts? Try your hand at writing your own! Do you like the concept of long, intricate rituals in a dark cellar lit only by candles while ominous chanting occurs? Well... try your best!
Sometimes, the way you want to practice may not be accessible to you at this time or you may not know how yet, but hey, that's what step one is for.
So you that know what you need to know and you know how you want to go about it, or at least have an idea, right? So how do we get what's inside your head and get it outside your head?
3. Dedicate a space and/or a time for your practice. You need a place to worship and to work with who you want to work with, so why don't we clean off that dusty shelf or maybe that section of your desk to start with? A few candles, real or electric can spruce a place up nicely, and maybe you can set out your favorite mug with a designated drink as a simple peace offering before you really get started. Clean it up and decorate it! Common decorations include: candles, incense, statues, crystals, pentagrams, inverted crosses, and maybe even an offering bowl!
So now you have who or what you want to work with, how you want to practice, and the beginnings of a space to practice. That wasn't so hard now, was it? Sometimes the big picture can be intimidating and it can be hard to figure out where to start, but guess what?
4. Spiritual and religious practice isn't constant, and it ISN'T a competition. Your practice won't be the same as someone who has been in this for a year, much less a decade, and that's okay! You're allowed to take things slow. You're allowed to not worship for several days or even months. Even people who have been Satanists for years and years still don't practice daily. Take things slow and make sure you do things in a way that makes YOU happy because eventually those resources you make and gather build up. What becomes 3 months to make a prayer that you're happy with becomes a prayer you can say daily that takes five minutes.
Do what feels right to you! Some people meditate and try to reach out astrally or spiritually, some light candles and incense and wait for a feeling. It is all subjective to what you feel is the right way to approach, but it also takes time to learn what that way is! Trial and error is NOT trial and failure.
Your problem might be that you're putting too much pressure on yourself to produce results, but that's not how this works. Take me for example (its Lucian, hi). I've been in this since 2011. I post a lot about research since that's something I do, but I don't post much about my practice at all and I've even been through periods of time where I didn't do anything with my practice for months on end. The times that I do something large and intricate are few and far between! Usually I find enough fulfillment in my practice to light a few candles, say a short prayer, and set out an offering of food or drink.
There is no minimum requirement to being a Satanist other than belief, so go out and do the devil's work!
Some Reasons I like Satanism:
I vibe so hard with femme fatale beings (not gender specific)
The emphasis on autonomy and liberation
I relate to demons in a voidpunk way
Satan and Satanic figures are cool
It is what you make of it
Can range from theistic to atheist and in between
Satan makes me feel understood in a way other religions or spiritual paths do/can
(this is my magic and Hellenic polytheism sideblog)
I like how the description fits both part of my situation and some of the aesthetic stuff I like lol
That said, this type of reading is quite interesting. It's like a first impression but it's your energy.
When I do an energy reading it comes across to me with an item representing each of the 5 senses. Overall it paints a picture of the persons energy
Below is the energy reading for @thirstyvampyre thank you for your patience!
SIGHT: I see a smooth road stretching off into the distance and disappearing over the horizon. There is no one around and it seems a bit unnerving.
TASTE: I can taste the sour/sweetness of a crisp granny Smith apple. The taste brings me a sense of comfort.
SMELL: I smell the scent of burning rubber. It's overwhelming in its assault of this sense.
HEAR: I can hear the low mournful sound of the wind passing through a semi enclosed space.
TOUCH: I feel emptiness. It reminds me very much of reaching out for something to steady yourself but finding nothing there and stumbling.
OVERALL: Overall I am getting the sense that there is perhaps a journey you've been contemplating but haven't embarked on yet because it's one you have to do on your own. There will be things to comfort you along the way once you start but it's very much indicating that you will have to rely on yourself
Fruit and anything made of fruit - especially apples, pomegranates or whatever your culture pictures as The Fruit. Strawberries for Venusian (Morningstar) associations, citrus for Solar. Cider, wine, juice, kompot, fruit teas. Cakes and other sweets made with fruit.
Strong spirits - often associated with the Devil.
Roses - Venusian. You can also give him rose water, alone or mixed with vodka.
Dandelions - for their chaotic, wild, untamed, unconquerable spirit.
Any plants associated with the Devil in your culture. Research your local lore and especially folk names to find them. Check their biological properties too - many of them can be poisonous so be careful.
Snake imagery - pictures, figurines, photos, any kind of arts and crafts. You can even make something yourself. As well imagery of goats and other animals associated with him.
Star imagery - especially Morningstar and falling stars.
Shed antlers - for Lucifer in his horned Devil of The Forest aspect.
Sunflower seeds - Solar.
Perfume or oils, especially of scents associated with him (apples etc.)
Your art of any kind dedicated to him.
Picrews of them - they enjoy it in my experience.
Queer symbols - Lucifer is a nonbinary shapeshifter.
Cakes, cookies and chocolate - just a delicious UPG.
(Made for Lucifer the Devil, offerings for the Roman Lucifer may vary.)
