One Of The Earliest Definite Mentions Of Azazel Was In The Book Of Enoch, Particularly In What Is Known

One of the earliest definite mentions of Azazel was in the Book of Enoch, particularly in what is known as The Book of the Watchers. This text, written between the 3rd and 1st century BCE, is a part of the Dead Sea Scrolls and is not considered canon by most modern day denominations but the characters and stories in this text remain a popular source of intrigue even to this day. In Enoch, we are told of the Grigori (Watchers) who were a group of 200 angels in charge of, you guessed it, watching mankind. In the process of watching humanity, they began to notice the “beautiful and comely daughters” of mankind and were overcome with lust for these women. Collectively, they agreed to take wives and father children but their leader Semjaza expressed concern that some of his men would back out. In an effort to guarantee that he would not be the only one commit this great sin, they all took an oath on Mt. Hermon, binding themselves ‘by mutual imprecations.’ Of the 200 Grigori, there were 20 leaders, with Semjaza holding the highest rank. The second highest rank went to Azazel who taught mankind how to make weapons and use cosmetics (get yourself an angel who can do both!)

Each of the Watchers taught humanity different ‘secrets of heaven’, which ended up being subjects like astrology, meteorology, and various practices considered ‘witchcraft’ in those times. However, some of them taught subjects still considered taboo in certain cultures. Tamiel, also called Kasdeja, for instance, was said to have taught women about abortion. Each of the Watchers also slept with mortal women and fathered monstrous giants called Nephilim. The Nephilim were said to be 3000 ells high, which is a little more than 2 miles tall. They were ravenous, even cannibalistic. When the labors of humanity could no longer keep up with the Nephilim’s appetites, the Nephilim turned on humanity, devouring man, animal, and each other. Those who were killed by the deeds of the Watchers arrived in heaven and brought God’s attention to destruction on Earth. To combat the devastation brought on by the Watchers, God sent he archangels. Uriel was told to warn Noah of the upcoming flood. Gabriel was in charge of killing the “bastards and the reprobates” as well as the Nephilim. He was instructed to pit them against each other while Michael bound Semjaza and the rest of the Watchers so that they could see their son’s rip each other apart. But God specifically set out an individual punishment for Azazel. “The Lord said to Raphael: ‘Bind Azazel hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening in the desert, which is in Dudael, and cast him therein. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness, and let him abide there forever, and cover his face that he may not see light. And on the day of the great judgement he shall be cast into the fire.” He further adds “the whole earth has been corrupted through the works that were taught by Azazel: to him ascribe all sin.’

Hi 👋, My name is Mohammad, and I’m reaching out in a moment of desperate need. I’m a father of three young children living in Gaza, and we are caught in the midst of a catastrophic war. Our home is no longer a safe haven, and the future here seems increasingly uncertain. 💔

I’ve launched a fundraising campaign with the goal of raising $40,000 to relocate my family to a safer place where my children can grow up in peace and have a chance at a brighter future.

Unfortunately, my previous fundraising efforts were abruptly halted when my account was terminated without explanation. However, I remain determined to keep fighting for my family’s safety and well-being. 🫶

If you could take a moment to read our story, consider donating, or simply share our campaign with others, it would make an incredible difference. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to safety and a new beginning. 🙏

Thank you for your time, compassion, and support. ❤️‍🩹

Reciprocity

Reciprocity

There are a lot of things pagans value. Most of them are the same universal values everyone appreciates, like kindness, personal responsibility, and community. One that seems to be unique to paganism, at least among Western religions, is reciprocity.

Reciprocity means a mutual positive exchange. It means rewarding kindness and respect with more of the same. It means that all parties involved in a relationship benefit from the relationship in some way.

This is similar to, but not quite the same as, fairness. When you strive for fairness, or justice, or any other similar concept, everyone gets what they deserve based on their actions. If you act like a jerk, you lose favor or get excluded from the group.

Reciprocity is a similar concept, but it has the added connotation of working toward positive relationships. When the word “reciprocity” is used in social psychology or in politics, it almost always refers to an exchange that benefits both parties. This desire for mutual benefit is a big part of pagan philosophy, especially in how pagans interact with their gods.

Pagans don’t worship their gods just because the gods exist, or because they feel a moral obligation to. Pagan worship is a relationship — and like any relationship, it is based on reciprocity.

You probably already practice reciprocity in your interpersonal relationships without even realizing it. If you want someone to be your friend you treat them well, pay attention to their needs, and respect their autonomy. In exchange, you get quality time with a person you like, a fulfilling emotional connection, and help when you need it.

Building relationships with pagan gods works much the same way. The focus is on the connection, rather than on what the gods can do for you or vice versa.

That’s not to say that pagans are casual about their worship of the gods. The gods are ancient, wise, and incredibly powerful, and all of that deserves respect. Pagans approach their gods with a sense of awe and humility, just like practitioners of any other religion. The difference lies in the belief among pagans that the gods also benefit from relationships with humans. We need the gods but, likewise, the gods need worshipers.

This is part of the reason offerings form the backbone of most pagan worship. Offerings “feed” the gods, giving them a metaphyiscal boost. (I’ve heard some pagans call them “energy snacks.”) These small gifts are a great, friendly way to get a god’s attention. After all, who doesn’t like presents?

It’s important to remember that offerings aren’t just payment for divine favors. Many pagans (myself included) have fallen into the trap of only making offerings or saying prayers when they need something from the gods. That’s no way to maintain a healthy relationship! We all have friends who only contact us when they need a favor — and most of us are annoyed and fed up with these people. Why would we assume that the gods are any different?

Reciprocity doesn’t just mean making an offering before you ask for something. It’s an ongoing commitment to a healthy, mutually beneficial relationship. Regular offerings and prayers are a great way to outwardly demonstrate this commitment.

How often “regular” offerings are depends on the pagan. Some pagans offer to their gods every day. Others only make offerings on major holidays or festivals. Once you begin working with deities, you’ll get a feel for how often you need to offer to your gods.

In general, it’s polite to make an offering when you first introduce yourself to a god or goddess. Don’t ask for anything at this point — think of the offering as a “getting to know you” gift. From there, continue making regular offerings for as long as you work closely with that god. You should also make an offering any time you ask for a big blessing or favor. (More on offerings in a future post.)

Offerings are an important part of practicing reciprocity, but they aren’t the only part. Reciprocity also requires you to uphold shared values.

For example, if you have a friend who can’t stand liars, and they find out you’ve been lying to them, you probably won’t stay friends for long. Likewise, if you want to keep a good relationship with a god, you need to value the things they value and live in a way they can approve of.

If you abhor violence and confrontation, it may be difficult for you to maintain reciprocal relationships with warlike deities like Ishtar or the Morrigan. On the other hand, if you are the kind of person who thrives on confrontation, a relationship with these deities may be natural for you. This is why I cannot stress enough how important it is to choose gods who share your core values. Like any relationship, you need some common ground to build a strong foundation.

(When we talk about specific pagan paths in future posts, we’ll talk more about their gods and what those gods ask of their followers. We’ll also talk about the difference between a religion that challenges your assumptions and a religion that violates your core values.)

This may seem complicated, but here’s the basics: reciprocity means that both parties benefit from a relationship. If you take one thing from this post, let it be this: pagan worship is a mutually beneficial partnership, not one-sided servitude.

Bedridden Witch: Bath Edition

image

For many of us, taking baths/showers is physically exhausting or impossible. Here are some ways to incorporate bath magic into your life without actually taking a bath or leaving bed!

Using wipes:

Wipes come in a variety of types, making them perfect. There’s usually a good fit for everyone, I personally enjoy the Burt’s Bees brand. I use correspondences to give my wipe-down a little oomph! I’m making this Burt’s Bees specific but you get the idea!

Cotton: Purity, healing, luck, protection.

Cucumber and Sage: Recovery, growth, soothing. Protection, cleansing, wishes.

Grapefruit: Cleansing, purification, energizing, healing.

Peach: Vitality, love, longevity.

White Cypress: Grounding, purification, soothing.

White Tea: Cleansing, clarity, blessings, glamour.

You can also draw sigils on the packaging, charge it with crystals, place the package in the sun/moonlight, etc.

Using washcloths/hand towels:

When I’m stuck in bed for a while, I keep a stack of washcloths and a vessel of water nearby so I can wash my arms and legs, or to put on my forehead to cool down. There’s a couple different ways to make this witchy!

Color correspondences for the washcloths themselves.

Use water charged in the sun/moon, or rain/storm water.

Charge your water with crystals or sigils.

If you put the crystals in the water, which is not required, here is a list of crystals that cannot go in water:  [X] [X]

Infuse your water with some herbs beforehand.

If I’m placing it on my forehead, I’ll add a couple drops of diluted essential oils.

Using a spray bottle:

Sometimes you just gotta mist yourself, which is especially helpful for the hair or days when it’s stuffy.

I love adding some herbs or a bit of rosewater into the spraybottle.

Once again, you can use sun/moon and rain/storm water.

You can also charge the bottle with crystals or sigils.

I like to say a little chant: “Like the rains cleanse the earth, let this water cleanse me/my body/my mind”.

Sometimes I just spritz myself with rosewater.

Other things:

Dry shampoo. Use to refresh, glamorize, etc. Charge it beforehand if you so desire.

Lotion. Use to rejuvenate, heal, etc. Scent/ingredient correspondences!

Deodorant. Charge, scent correspondences, you get the idea!

Brushing your teeth. If you can’t make it to the bathroom, I like to keep a travel sized kit by my bed and spit into a cup (definitely different than the one I drink from). Don’t underestimate the cleansing and refreshing powers of brushing your teeth!

Anything else you can think of!

Low energy + ingredient magic for in the tub:

Pour some Epsom salts in there. Bonus points if they’re infused with anything. You know the deal, correspondences. You can also do this for a hand/foot soak if you’re able to access the floor and have a bowl!

Plop some tea bags in the bath. Mint really helps me with migraines and stomach stuff! You can also place them over your eyes/on your forehead.

Simple shower spell/glamour

Soak in positivity: a magical bath

The Divine Feminine in the Left Hand Path WITHOUT appropriation

When it comes to demonolatry, satanism, and luciferianism, most people tend to gravitate towards Lilith, which isn't great, considering that she is from Judaism, which is a closed religion.

So you're probably thinking "well shit Phi, who am I supposed to venerate as a feminine figure" and to that the answer is... read anyone BUT Lilith. Yeah, that doesn't sound to helpful does it?? Well, its actually more helpful than you think. There are MANY figures in the left hand path that can be venerated as your divine feminine.

Want an absolute Bad Bitch who doesn't take any shit? Look into Vepar, Astaroth, and Babalon to name a few!

Want someone who directly went against God? Eve! Shes the one who first ate the fruit of knowledge and got Adam to follow suit.

Want someone who could be motherly and deals with love? Gremory and Unsere are both wonderful choices!

Want someone who you could consider the consort of Lucifer? Diana in Stregoneria is considered to be Lucifer's consort. They have a daughter named Aradia who is considered the first witch!

"But I wanna worship someone that can be considered a succubus and help with sexuality!" Babalon. You're gonna wanna want Babalon.. like. She literally rides upon a 7 headed beast with a chalice of wine. Classy as all hell. People do tend to conflate her with Lilith but in my experiences Babalon is very distinctly different. If shes syncretized with any demon, it would likely be Astaroth. You could also work with Unsere and Gremory!

"Yeah but none of them call to me" and thats fine! If you keep searching through various hierarchies im sure you'll find someone that vibes with you! Plus, demons aren't bound by gender so for example, let's say you feel drawn to Sitri, a demon thats traditionally depicted as masculine, if she feels feminine to you, nothing is stopping you from venerating her in that way!

"But Lilith genuinely calls to me and I feel drawn to her" I get it..I really do. But if you wanna truly get the most out of working with her, look into Judaism. See if it resonates with you. If it truly does, look into converting. But don't convert solely so you have a free pass to work with Lilith.

"But I don't wanna be part of an Abrahamic religion!!! God sucks!!" Too bad buddy. Plus, the way God is portrayed in Judaism is VERY different than how they're portrayed in Christianity. If you don't wanna put in the effort to actually genuinely understand Lilith's source, why work with her?

"But I still hate Abrahamic religions!" Then check yourself. Do you really hate all abrahamic religions or just Christianity? Obviously its ok to hold resentment towards stuff that traumatized you, but to conflate all abrahamic religions together and act like they're the same is both antisemetic and Islamophobic. If your trauma is causing you to be a dick about stuff that didn't even tie into your trauma, do some soul searching and get help. Period.

Its easy to have a divine feminine figure in your LHP practice without appropriating closed cultures. Just use common sense.

God sent his “only son” to die on the cross. Jesus, his son, allegedly went through the most gruesome physical and emotional pain known to man (according to the cult I was raised in).

So my question is this:

If this God is all-powerful, omnipotent and perfect as he’s described to be, why would the crucifixion be necessary?

If you have the ability to manipulate and control everything why would you willingly send your “ONE AND ONLY” son to be crucified on this shit hole of a planet?

I could elaborate for hours. But look, all I’m saying is whatever force of evil or power that would be in place to make it necessary for a god to have to die on a fucking tree for all of humanity...that’s what I want to know about. That’s who is really in control.

And if there isn’t anyone controlling God...he was able to consciously send his “son” to die a horrible death for the fucking show of it all. For the drama of it. For the attention. I don’t care how “mysterious” you tell me god is.

His “mysterious” ways...they’re immoral. Regardless.

The Aspects of Satan/Lucifer

I’ve talked about this before, but I’ve never made a full post about it. And since it’s important, it’s a bit overdue.

The one we know as the Devil has two main aspects that represent His very being and presence in our Universe. These two aspects divide His forms and make it easier to understand His dual-nature as both Adversary and Liberator.

These aspects are of Satan and of Lucifer.

Satan

Satan is representative of human life through the lense of animalistic existence. He is feared and hated by those who don’t understand Him. Yet, He is the embodiment of mankind’s most human qualities, and thusly, should be celebrated.

Anton LaVey wasn’t wrong in his 9 Satanic Statements. Satan does represent vital existence, vengeance over forgiveness, and indulgence. Lord Satan freely partakes in, what by many, is considered sin, proving to the world that the human nature to sin isn’t evil at all, but completely natural and blameless.

Satan encourages the willingness to dabble in the strange and exciting for the sake of one’s gratification. For without the sweet taste of indulgence and forces of life, what true life are we living? We’re not. Without indulging in life, we’re dead.

The Satanic Aspect also embodies war, more specifically offensive attacks. For how is one to ever challenge the status quo by simply accepting authority? Taking authority into question is an action most loved by Satan. He admires those who don’t accept defeat, and continuously fight for what they desire.

Darkness is often associated with Satan, and not without mistake. For He is the Lord of Shadows. He is the Master of Mysteries. Satan doesn’t require the light for His followers to write in His book. For He already knows what it reads. He knows all, yet of Him little is known by the masses.

Satan represents the application of both magick and force to change a situation in one’s life. He acts on whim and with great power to get things done. He is the down and dirty type of magick. The methods of the Left Hand Path. And He’s certainly not afraid of cursing.

Satan is synonymous with emotions and feelings. He isn’t fearful of one knowing their feelings or stance on a subject and certainly would never suggest the repression of one’s emotions. Part of the Dark Lord’s teachings is to “know thyself” and with knowing one’s self, comes knowing and coming to terms with how one feels.

Satan is most definitely characterized through sexual and vital presences. He is extremely masculine and exudes an aura of dominance. The Devil teaches that one should never suppress one’s sexual desires, no matter how society weighs in. For sex is the basis of all life and vitality, and without enjoyment of one’s own body, how can one enjoy their spiritual side?

Satan shouldn’t be feared or rejected, as in a sense, one would be rejecting a part of themselves. There is a rebel within each of us. A part that revels in taboos and things society isn’t exactly comfortable with.

Hail Satan!

Lucifer

The aspect of Lucifer represents spiritual freedom and knowledge. He is the Light Bearer. The Bringer of Knowledge. He is the Great Teacher of all magickal and spiritual ideas. And for His knowingness and beautiful presence, He is deserving of the greatest respects.

The Morning Star, our glorious Lucifer, liberated humanity from the the Tyrant, giving all people the ability of choice and free will without punishment. He taught great secrets to Lilith and tempted Eve to partake in the Knowledge of Life. Without the Lord of Light, we would never know the great magickal secrets of the earth, and therefore be separated from our true potential.

Lucifer is representative of wisdom. He teaches that one should know of the world around one’s self, and do their best to always seek knowledge, both spiritual and otherwise. Without knowledge of the world, how does one perform successful magickal workings or great acts of science to affect change?

Lucifer embodies logical ability and intellect. He declares that one is able to make their own decisions through logic and reason in order to survive. He doesn’t encourage superstition without proper thought. For without the application of logic and reason, one is just following blindly what they’re told to do, and that never ends well.

The Aspect of Lucifer is associated with Light. Light of Knowledge, Light of Day, For He is the Guiding Star. He is the intuitive spirit in each of us, as well as the Omiscient force that drives humanity toward discovery.

Lucifer teaches careful consideration before one commits any damning action. For if one decides to cast a curse, or get revenge, they should consider how to do it and plan accordingly. Is it worth the trouble? Logic and reason accompany this lesson, as well as many of The Morning Star’s teachings.

Lucifer is an embodiment of philosophical awakening. One should question the way things are, in pursuit of correcting error along the way. If one should see another suffering, one should do one’s best to rectify it. For if it wasn’t for the great charity of our Lord Lucifer, humanity would be bumbling idiots.

Lucifer is the encompassment of the spiritual world. In order for one to know physical life, one must know the spiritual plane for the sake of balance. Without this, the scales are tipped, and consequence follows.

Lucifer, the glorious God of Light, should be most appreciated for His great teachings. Our Liberator defended our nature, and so in His Honor, one should strive to learn the ways of magick and science.

Ave Luciferi!

In conclusion,

One should understand the importance and need for both Aspects of the glorious Satan Lucifer. Without the dark how will we have the light? Without carnality, how does one appreciate the complex philosophies of life?

While Satan is the darkness and Lucifer is the light, this doesn’t mean one should favor one over the other. We all have these Aspects within us. The lustful and the charitable. The warrior and the thoughtful. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t be complete. And so, by honoring these parts of ourselves, we are closer to divinity and infernality. We are accepting our nature.

Satan Lucifer seeks to help those who understand themselves AND the world around them. For how is He supposed to help someone who won’t help themselves by just looking around. To be analytical and know yourself, and the world, and your place within, is to have a wealth of knowledge, and therefore, power beyond belief.

would you have any tips for being a respectful theistic satanist? i am aware that satanism is often used as an antisemitic dogwhistle as well as of the antisemitism that often presents within the field, and i do my best to recognize and combat these things and listen to jewish voices, but is there anything in particular you would recommend avoiding? i am asking in terms of actions or practices, not organizations, btw

Unfortunately, that's not really my call to make. I encourage you to bring the question to a jewish practitioner, so im gonna throw the question over to @will-o-the-witch
