It was 6pm, and you and Haechan were the last ones left in the high school staff room.

“Hey, Haechan?” You slung on your sidebag. 

“Y/n?” Your fellow English teacher and closest friend flashed you a dazzling smile. His long, chocolate lashes brushed against his circle glasses.

 Your throat went tight. After everything you’d done to him, Haechan still had a smile for you.  

“So, imagine that you were in charge of choosing your friend’s wedding cake. Only… you knew nothing about baking.” You put on your cutest puppy-eyes. 

Haechan’s smirked. “This is all hypothetical, of course.”

“Right! Hypothetically… the wedding was in three days, and all these words were being thrown around like ‘ganache’ and ‘marzipan’ and you were kinda freaking out! And… I hope you know this is not hypothetical by now!” 

You had to steady yourself on a locker. 

Haechan crossed his arms, pouting. “First, breathe – you’re not breathing,” he ordered.

You reminded yourself to suck in air.

“Then, hypothetically, I would be happy to come and pick a cake for you,” Haechan allowed.  

“Yes!” Unthinkingly, you jumped up, and hugged Haechan tight. His body was solid and comforting under your grasp. You realised you were inhaling the scent of his woollen jumper – and quickly flinched back. 

“Sorry, – uh – I wasn’t thinking,” you apologised, eyes looking anywhere but at him. 

Haechan placed his hands firmly on your arms, and looked you in the eye. “Y/n, it’s fine. You don’t have to protect me. I’m over it.” His caramel voice was steady, but you felt his fingers trembling. 

Your eyes were wide. “Yes, me too. What happened between us is like, ancient history.”

But then, your eyes flickered over to the place in the hallway that had haunted you for three months. Just there, in front of your English classroom, you broke a heart. 

That was where Haechan had proposed.

"So, uh—where's Chenle? Have you heard from"—Jisung coughs—"from him?"

Your feet shuffle, kicking against the gravel as you shiver in the cold atmosphere. You really should've known better than to trust what Renjun had to say about the weather; he rarely leaves the apartment. "It's not that cold," he said.

Well, when you see him, you're putting your most-likely-frostbitten-hands on his face.

You heave a shaky breath, observing how white clouds leave your lips. You eye Jisung from head to toe while his tall stature stands a good distance from you. His eyes are glassy from the dry air and his shoulders stick up frozen. You don't have the energy to respond, fishing your phone from your flimsy fall-appropriate jacket to call Renjun.

After a few rings, you hear shuffling before you speak. "Renjun, I swear—"

"Did you tell him, yet?"

"—I'm putting all of your whites with the colors next time I do laund—what?"

He scoffs. "Ignoring that. Anyways, tell him—that you like him?" He says as if it's the most obvious thing ever.

Your gaze flickers to Jisung, who hides half of his face beneath his collar, rocking back and forth on his feet. You turn your back to him while your brows furrow. "This is what it's about? Where the hell is he—Chenle? He was supposed to spend—"

"He's with me."

"What? You guys are grade-A assholes," you hiss. Jisung takes a few steps closer, looking at you with half-concern and half-curiosity. The boiling rage that bubbles inside is almost strong enough to melt the snow, but you contain yourself in front of Jisung.

Chenle promised you two that he'd treat you to dinner, telling you to not bother bringing your wallets. How foolish of you to believe his bluff. The restaurant doesn't allow people to wait inside, putting their greed over decency as the host and staff alike watch you from the warm indoors.

He ordered a ride for you guys and you initially thought: "wow, what a guy." But now, you just want to soak all of his cashmere sleeves in water.

"I swear to fucking God, get us a ride back home or it'll be even worse," you whisper-yell into the phone.

You hear more muffled sounds until a new voice speaks. "Willing to take the risk—you gotta stop with the crushing, it's getting annoying—"

"Chenle, I'll—"

"—call us back when you're done!"

The phone makes a beep, and you put it back into your pocket. Your nose drips and your body shakes like a leaf. Turning around, you find yourself inches away from Jisung, his body bent forward as his doe pupils stare into yours.

You gulp and he does the same. "Sorry, I didn't mean to stand so close," he murmurs under his collar.

What he says goes through one ear and out the other, you're freezing, you're tired; you're aggravated. Your pride is crumbling before you, and you're aching to find warmth anywhere. So you blurt it out; the damage has been done. "Jisung, I like"—a sudden wave of heat engulfs your body—"you?"

Your neck is snug into the crook of his neck, his long arms wrapped around your torso. And even through the layers and layers of clothing, you can sense the faint feeling of his heart pounding.

His body trembles and his ample breathing sits near your shoulder. "I'm just tr—trying to keep you warm. You looked cold..." he trails off.

Your arms wait—as if anticipating for something to interrupt—before wrapping around him, bringing your bodies flush together.

You can't tell, but Jisung squeezes his eyes shut and purses his lips.

"But, I like you... yeah, I like you, too."

I get so angry hearing and reading about what's happening in Palestine right now. I don't even know what to do and it all feels hopeless 😔

The situation around Sheikh Jarrah should make everyone angry. For those of you who might not know what’ going on here’s a brief breakdown:

Indigenous Palestinian residents of Sheikh Jarrah, for a very long time, have been fighting lengthy legal battles in Israeli courts against eviction orders which aim to replace these indigenous people with illegal Israeli settlers. 

On May 7th, the illegal Israeli settlers along with courts (an apparatus of Israel’s apartheid regime) have started a campaign to illegally take over the home’s of Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah. These families were given until today (May 10th, 2021) to “reach an agreement” with the occupiers. This obviously prompted protests. The IDF has also brutally responded to these protests. Now the world is watching and global protests have started happening.

Some important things to note:

-Sheikh Jarrah belongs to the Palestinian families. It is part of the occupied Palestinian territory, and therefore any Israeli settler presence in it amounts to a war crime under international law. 

-There has been a mountain of UN Security Council resolutions demanding that Israel withdraw from East Jerusalem which Israel continues to ignore.

-This is ethnic cleansing

I know you feel hopeless but here’s what we can do:

-Support BDS (Boycott, Divestments, Sanctions) movements (What”s BDS?) Boycott Israeli products from their colonial settlements

-Understand whats happening in Palestine and the crimes of apartheid/persecution being committed by Israel. (Check out this great report by HRW on the situation) After getting an understanding. SPREAD AWARENESS. Especially in the US. This is key to combatting Evangelical propaganda and Israeli lobbyists. Do this through social media.

-Contact your local reps and pressure them to stop giving Israel military funding or any form of financial support. Fight against zionist lobbyists such as AIPAC or Christians United for Israel.

“We have a problem,” Donghyuck of Slytherin tries to warn you before you enter the Great Hall. His presence comes as a surprise to you, not used to seeing him so early in the morning. He’s as handsome as ever with his dyed brown locks framing his perfectly sculpted face, something you would never admit out loud-- not because you didn’t want to but because you had to keep that thought to yourself, for your family’s pride depended on it. 

“Out of the way, snake,” you say back but Donghyuck only fights for your attention once more. The student body is used to seeing the two of you attack each other with insults but the looks they are giving you this morning are something you’re not familiar with. They look amused with their teasing smirks as they stare knowingly at your bickering bodies in front of the large doors. You’ve been getting these stares as soon as you entered the hallway leading up to the Great Hall, snickers following you as soon as you passed by a pair of mischievous red-headed twins. 

“Wait,” Donghyuk wraps his hand around your wrist, dragging you out of the morning crowd’s view. It’s nothing much, it’s just his long, dainty fingers tightening around your arm but it never fails to send a flurry of sparks down your spine. You feel your heart leaping away much like the chocolate frogs you loved to consume in your free time. 

He suddenly stops in a hidden staircase, away from curious eyes, and he buries his head into the crook of your neck. His breath tickles your skin and his toned arms circle around your waist, the actions sending your heart aflame. You smell the peppermint of his toothpaste and the comforting scent of dry cedar that drives you absolutely insane.

“Donghyuck, please, what are you doing?” you hiss at him. “Someone could see us!”

Your so-called rival only buries his head more into you and the material of his robe shroud you with a warmth you only felt around his presence. “Doesn’t matter,” he mumbles into your skin. “They already know.”

“What?”

“The entire student body knows,” the overly affectionate Slytherin replies as he places a kiss on your temple. 

You yank away from him with widened eyes. “What do you mean by that?”

It was then you realize Donghyuck isn’t wearing his usual colors; instead of the usual green and silver he parades in, you see him bashfully wearing your house colors. “Why are you wearing that?” Instead of replying, he juts his chin out to gesture at your uniform.

Glancing at your own clothing, you finally noticed that you were dressed in Slytherin colors with his name proudly embroidered on your tie. Your hands tug at your tie and robes as Donghyuck watches you with a fond smile. “W-what is the meaning of this, Hyuck?”

“You know how the Weasley’s caught us the other day with that blasted map of theirs?”

“Yes? They greeted me rather weirdly this morning,” you told him.

Donghyuck coughs at that comment, trying to figure out how to break the news to you. “They, uh, enchanted our ties to match our partner’s colors. So when I walked in this morning, everyone saw your name on my tie and found out.”

“Blast those twins,” you curse. You had to get them back later.

“I know you wanted to keep this a secret-- I’m sorry,” he apologizes. It was true. Your families were rivals in a sense and you wanted to keep up with the pretense, afraid of disappointing your family. Hiding your relationship with Donghyuck was one of the hardest challenges you had to face. Cursing him and throwing insults at your lover was far from fun and games.

“No, it’s okay,” you reassure him with a smile. He brings the back of your hand to his lips, pressing a light kiss on your knuckles. “I’m tired of hiding, family rivalries be damned.”

“Yeah?” Donghyuck smiles at you.

“Yeah,” you giggle back. “Besides, maybe I want to go on cute Hogsmeade dates with you without sneaking around.”

When Donghyuck pulls you into a kiss, it beats the feeling of flying on your trusty broom. It’s nothing short of magic. He pulls away and rests his forehead on yours. “Well then, let me walk you to your table.”

Jaehyun stood in the counter, watching you as you flipped the next page of the book that you were reading with an enthusiasm of a kid. From his position, he could clearly see the twinkle in your eyes as you skim through the words printed out on it.

It has been exactly a week since you started to frequent the coffee shop Jaehyun was working at. And in those times, he’d never seen you with an empty hand. You were always holding and reading a book.

He found it captivating; the way your face give out the scene unfolding in the book. If your eyebrows are knitted together, Jaehyun knew that whatever your reading wasn’t pleasing. He knew that when your mouth gapes a little bit, a plot twist was behind it. And whenever you smile with your eyes, he knows that the characters spent a good time with each other.

He wasn’t much of a reader, but because of you, Jaehyun had unobtrusively peeked at the cover of the book you were reading. After days of searching for it to the bookstores, he’d finally found the series. And boy, didn’t he binge-read the first and second book.

Fortunately, you were reading the second book of the series when you visited the coffee shop. And by the looks of it, one more chapter and you were ready for the third book.

“Whose is this?” Jaehyun asked his co-worker, referring to the slice of cake on the counter. He sure knew that it was your order, because Jaehyun had given a lot of attention to your taste buds. Yet he was hoping that you won’t find it creepy.

“For the girl right there,” his co-worker answered. When he attempted to pick up your order, Jaehyun offered to do the honor. With a confused look, his co-worker nodded.

With a tray of your order in hand, Jaehyun walked owards you. You didn’t even notice him as he laid the plate in front of you.

Jaehyun chuckled. “You’re sure this is what you want?” he asked. You looked up to him, face contorted in a confused expression. Jaehyun cleared his throat. “I search her eyes for doubt, fear, uncertainty. But all I see is that fire. Ten hells.”

Upon hearing the words, your face lightened up. Then you spoke the next words from the book, “I am sure.”

Jaehyun stared at your eyes, as if he was the character from the book himself. “Then I’ll find a way.”

You placed the book on the table, your eyes never leaving Jaehyun’s. “What— How did you know that?” you asked, clearly impressed.

A swell of pride bloomed in Jaehyun’s heart. At least, his reading wasn’t in vain. “Well... it’s a good book so I’ve picked it up.”

“Oh, yes.” You chuckled. “It really is.” Then you noticed him still standing. “Oh, please have a seat!”

“Oh, no— it’s okay—” Jaehyun scratched the back of his head, trying to hide the redness of his ears.

“I insist,” you said with a small chuckle. “It’s nice to have someone I could talk about books with.”

Jaehyun sat with a wide smile spread out on his lips.

For weeks, both of you would go on dates in a book store or in a library. Jaehyun’s growing obsession of books matched yours perfectly. And who knows, perhaps your wedding vows would be like those written in a classic book.
