kaen was not the child of school romance or grown-up planning. he was something created from lust. mundungus fletcher and miyake shun were never supposed to be anything beyond that one night of passion... but... nevertheless, kaen entered the picture. a brief bit of hope and connection, especially given the time. they tried to make the most of it. they tried to make a family… if you could call it that.

shun was really the sole caretaker. mundungus was always off with his latest ‘get rich’ scheme. it wasn’t always illicit activities, just mostly. that and a gamble or three. a law broken more than once. a couple they were not. never close aside from that single night.

DEATH TW: just shy of starting his second year at hogwarts, shun passed suddenly. a muggle heart thing— hypertrophic cardiomyopathy— nothing attached to dark magic or an ill-intended brew. yet still sudden. unexpected. and wildly unfair. he’d been lucky enough not to have been the one to find her, thought the hurt remained all the same. kaen holds onto that sensation for one essential fact: he never got to say goodbye.

DEATH MENTION, ABANDONMENT TW, PRISON TW: and like the top-notch parent that he was, mundungus strayed further away after shun passed. didn’t always have to be the physical distance, sometimes it was like he was just clocking in as dad. picking up his hours as a fatherly figure before he could dash off again to the life he wanted. a blip on the radar. a mad dash per month not to be marked as dead-beat. because fuck if mundungus was considered dead-beat. as if he hadn't always been working at or crafting some scheme. like the one that landed him in hot water... the first time, then the again, and... somewhere along the line, mundungus had toed the line one, two steps too far. incarcerated.

PRISON TW: despite always holding the name flecher, it wasn't until mundungus got imprisoned that kaen felt like he'd won his father's attention, though he blamed the sudden thirst for a relationship on boredom. after all, how many letters had kaen sent as a kid when mundungus had gone off on one of his business trips? and how many had he gotten returned? and this quick? after receiving that first correspondence from his jailed father, kaen left everything unopened. as a result, he has a bedside drawer stuffed with unanswered, unread letters.

despite their strained relationship, kaen very clearly carries his sentiment. a gaudy, family ring given to him that second shun-less christmas. "from one fletcher to the next. it was my father’s,” mun had told him. kaen never knew if the story was real or fake, if the ring had really just been snagged off some poor unfortunate in the tube or if his dad was telling the truth. either way, it never left his hand.

all that to say the apple didn't fall far from the tree. now kaen blamed circumstance: hardly a parent at his side, the cost of living hung over-head like a dark cloud, the money always short. growing, saving, only to be gone in a snap. i mean, rent had to be paid and, well, a worker's wage wasn’t fucking cutting it. he started by stealing in stores, mostly what he needed and then what he wanted. soon he got pretty good at picking pockets. then he just sunk further in.

the sticky fingers started with that very first scholarly trip to diagon, going down the school shopping list, watching as his mum clutched her coin purse tighter and tighter with each galleon and knut slid across the counter. kaen couldn’t find it in him to ask for even a pack of caramel cobwebs extra. he stomached the want at first, but by the second passing of the shop, want took over. and, fuck, had it been easy. in a second his pocket was heavier and his need was less. in an odd way, kaen's had a hankering for caramel cobwebs ever since.

his favorite place at hogwarts had been the room of requirement. felt like heaven the first time he found it. it’s not quite the same, but the junk shop in diagon alley has a similar feel. plus, kaen has access to the merchandise. and, should people want something not for sale on the floor, all they need to do is know how to ask. what the owner doesn’t know, won’t hurt him.

very into tattoos. they’re a way for him to be vulnerable without having to be outright with it. the ink does a better job at saying his feeling than his words do.

he’s an accidental cat father. socks just kept showing up on his fire escape. night one, he figured she was just curious but by the third he said fuck it and let her inside. she’s never left since. as an all black cat, people are often confused as to her name, having expected some coloration on her paws. that is, until they learn of her hoarding.

definitely has a cocky air about himself, but mostly because he’s had to stand on his own two feet for so long so he has a sense of pride with that, and knowing what he’s capable of. so in turn he doesn’t take a liking to people making incorrect assumptions. assume away, just be accurate about it.

kaen was pulling the last of his newest haul out of his knapsack when he heard the bell above the shop door jingle. turning, a bottle of daisyroot draught in hand, he looked to the doorway and the person standing there with a half-smile. “welcome to my office.” he stood taller, gesturing with the bottle around the junk shop, at the cluttered shelves that lined the place. “anything ‘ye lookin' for n'particular? or are ‘ye just here to see me?” kaen asked, lifting his chin, a cocky grin in company.
