Well, well, well look who came running back

I think the best piece of character design advice I ever received was actually from a band leadership camp I attended in june of 2017. 

the speaker there gave lots of advice for leaders—obviously, it was a leadership camp—but his saying about personality flaws struck me as useful for writers too. 

he said to us all “your curses are your blessings and your blessings are your curses” and went on to explain how because he was such a great speaker, it made him a terrible listener. he could give speeches for hours on end and inspire thousands of people, but as soon as someone wanted to talk to him one on one or vent to him, he struggled with it. 

he had us write down our greatest weakness and relate it to our biggest strength (mine being that I am far too emotional, but I’m gentle with others because I can understand their emotions), and the whole time people are sharing theirs, my mind was running wild with all my characters and their flaws.

previously, I had added flaws as an after thought, as in “this character seems too perfect. how can I make them not-like-that?” but that’s not how people or personalities work. for every human alive, their flaws and their strengths are directly related to each other. you can’t have one without the other.

is your character strong-willed? that can easily turn into stubbornness. is your character compassionate? maybe they give too many chances. are they loyal? then they’ll destroy the world for the people they love.

it works the other way around too: maybe your villain only hates the protagonist’s people because they love their own and just have a twisted sense of how to protect them. maybe your antagonist is arrogant, but they’ll be confident in everything they do.

tl;dr “your curses are your blessings, and your blessings are your curses” there is no such thing as a character flaw, just a strength that has been stretched too far.

my notes: Really sweet and made me nostalgic for s1-era fics. Some good garrison!klance content which is my JAM. also the way it reinterprets canon scenes and blends them in with original scenes is really cool and feels so seamless. over all just super cute and funny and entertaining.

my notes: i adored this, it’s so sweet and magical! the combination of it being a childhood friends au and a mermaid au….wow i’m soft. keith and lance’s relationship is developed so well in this, and i love how it spans a long amount of time and how we get to see how the two of them change from year to year. a lot of really touching moments but also some really funny moments as well.

summary: This isn’t how Lance intended to spend his vacation, chasing after Keith’s premonitions. But here he is, and he’s one hundred percent blaming Keith for all the trouble they’re about to get into. Keith makes bad decision, Lance makes mistakes, and both of them are stuck together on a space pirate adventure neither of them asked for.

my notes: this fic had me at “space pirates” but yeah wow this is amazing. i loved the fast pace and epic/adventurous feel of it, plus it has really snappy dialogue and parts that made me laugh out loud. plus keith and lance are so well-written in it and have such a good and in-character dynamic. an instant fave.

summary: The boy has ocean-blue eyes, and a gaze that pierces through all the red.

my notes: a short one but super engaging and emotional. the writing is so beautiful and poetic.

summary: “I wanted to tell hi— them how much I worried about them.” Shiro pauses, gaze wandering to some point in the distance. “But I had trouble admitting it to myself. And to them.”

“Why?”

“Let’s just say that… although it shouldn’t be an issue anymore, it is.” Shiro returns his attention to Lance. Staring straight into his eyes with staggering intensity.

Or: Shiro helps Lance confront puzzling emotions with reassurance and stories of the past.

my notes: a nice lil fic about lance turning to shiro for help when he realizes his feelings for keith, and shiro gives his advice based on his own feelings for adam. it’s just really sweet and heartfelt, i love this so much!

my notes: adam and shiro reunite and talk things out. AAHH this fic made me tear up. the convo between them just feels really organic and believable, it made me so emotional.

my notes: this is sweet and beautiful and i couldn’t stop smiling! the shiro & adam backstory is so cute where they start off with a rivalry…and hearing adam’s story about it makes lance start to realize his own feelings for keith. beautifully written and i loved it.

Love In Voltron

You should always be wary of things said in interviews, but one thing I absolutely believe is when LM and JDS said that one of the biggest themes within Voltron is love. I’m not talking about shipping or anything like that, just love in general and in all its forms.

I’m going to be looking at different kinds of love, and how, as far as we’ve seen on the show, it applies to them. There’s a tiny bit of speculation in spots too, because of course there is. This gets long, so it’s going below the cut.
