Please can we stop refering to Zuko's eyes as 'good' and 'bad' in fics. What he actually has is a 'seeing eye' and a 'blind eye'. There is nothing inherently bad about a blind eye.

Negative language towards disability is ridiculously common in our ableist society. I know this community is often very good at writing disabled characters, and people mean no ill intent with this language, but please consider the words you use and their connotations.

This is not a call out, nor an attack, and it is not targeted at anyone specifically. I am just someone in the disabled community asking you to please think about why you might consider a blind eye to be bad, especially in a fandom with a canon blind character.

like how did shinichiro suddenly go "wait, i need to make my life more interesting" then thought that a gang was what he required

like did he see a movie about a gang and decided he wants it as well?? did he grow up in an environment where he heard or saw or experienced any gang-related things? did he ever tell anyone and no one thought "hey, thats a crazy idea. stop"???

and how did he come up with the name? did he stay up all night, writing down random words he thought were cool, watched several action movies, or just picked up on some english words by coincidence??? or did it come naturally to him as if it was meant to be?

and how the hell did he recruit people into a gang that just consisted of one man? like no offense to wakui but i genuinely find it hard to believe that wakasa and benkei looked at his weeping ass and thought "hmmm, yk what, i like you, i'll join your gang"??? ofc, wakasa and benkei joining meant their members did as well and thus their numbers grew, but did no one oppose? i mean i wouldnt wanna be under the command of a weak ass person. also, before wakasa and benkei, black dragons was just shin.

did he go around proclaiming he was the leader of the black dragons? people mustve thougt he was insane. and what about takeomi? as far as i can remember him and shin were childhood friends, so did takeomi never stop to consider what shinichiro was doing? was takeomi genuinely on board with whatever shin did? i mean, like, he wasnt ever like "hey man, you need to calm down, youve got a brother to take care of."??

i am genuinely curious because black dragons is a prominent gang but i feel like we know so little about it, which is the same case as its leader. i hope we get some information soon.

I think the disabled community needs to stop viewing physical and mental disabilities as strict categories that every disability fits neatly into. Disability doesn't and never will come wrapped in a simple package. I absolutely agree that sometimes it is important to make a distinction, but there also needs to be an understanding that there are people whose disabilities aren't strictly physical or mental.

I have met autistic people whose apraxia has led them to use a wheelchair, are they not physically disabled just because the cause is mental? Have they not been hurt just as much by the c-slur as someone who uses a wheelchair for chronic pain?

I have a condition that affects my eyesight to the point I can't drive. My condition is neurological, yet has very physical affects. Is that disability mental, or is it physical? Am I less blind because the problem is with my brain and not my retinas?

Is someone with severe Auditory Processing Disorder who considers themself Hard of Hearing just mentally disabled and not physically too? You can experience many of the same symptoms from hearing loss, so why is only one of us physically disabled?

What about someone like me who has both Auditory Processing Disorder and hearing loss? Where does the physical disability start and the mental disability end, when I cannot tell whether I'm struggling because I can't hear something versus because my brain isn't processing it? /rh

Disabilities are complex and will never be simple to define. There will always be blurry lines. Not every disabled person needs to neatly fit in the box of either mentally or physically disabled. There will always be people in the awkward in-between or whose combination of disabilities creates something new altogether.
